The idiotic Insulate Britain are at it again

Now they have blocked the port of Dover. On top of Lorry driver shortage and commodity supply issues, these absolute criminals are causing yet more damage to the supply chain. And who suffers? Joe Public suffers yet more price hikes because virtue signalling, well healed, are damaging the country so no benefit whatsoever. None at all. Hashtag less than 1% of global emissions

Bunch of idiots (politest word I can think of to not get deleted!)

All they are doing is causing disruption and anger not doing anything at all to help their cause.

MyPatronusIsACat · 24/09/2021 13:05

@sst1234 The fuckers need hosing down tbh. Bunch of overprivileged trust fund twats, with nothing better to do. I fucking hate them with a passion, and wish they'd drop off the planet.

On a positive note, quite a few of them were arrested today. Throw away the fucking key. Hmm

Sirzy · 24/09/2021 13:05

www.gov.uk/improve-energy-efficiency and there are already grants available for people who need help with the cost of things such as insulation.

Perhaps if it means so much to these people instead of wasting everyone’s time they could be out fundraising to help cover rhe costs for even more people!

LikeACatInTheDark · 24/09/2021 13:07

@CuriousaboutSamphire

... and is already a legal requirement in new builds.

... has been a requirement in all rental properties for a while.

... is already present in many homes, often helped by previous grants.

... and on and on...

I'm in a top floor flat in social housing. I've stuck my head in the loft and there doesn't seem to be any insulation at all - should there be? Confused
sashagabadon · 24/09/2021 13:09

the thing is they have won the argument already - no one disagrees with them - who would argue against people insulating their lofts?! Confused .
It's a bizarre cause to be creating so much disruption in aid of.

SoloISland · 24/09/2021 13:09

@MintJulia

They do have a point even if their actions are inconvenient.

We have vast amounts of housing stock that has not been updated with insulation.

Hundreds of people die each year in the UK from the cold. Heat loss adds very significantly to our emissions. There is no reason why the govt could not (at the very least) scrap VAT on loft insulation, double & triple glazing, insulated exterior doors, ground source heat pumps etc. Something has to change.

I've owned four homes in my life. I've had to replace these elements in every house. I'm lucky that I can but others aren't so fortunate. We need government to act and not with the ineffectual 'approved supplier' schemes that just allow unscrupulous companies to profiteer and rip people off.

Govt of all colours, local and central needs a kick up the bum.

But this kind of behaviour?

Inexcusable and ineffective.

MichelleScarn · 24/09/2021 13:11

Very pleased with this, they should also be charged with wasting police time, wasting resources. And fined for the costs of it all.

Bloodypunkrockers · 24/09/2021 13:14

Glad to hear some have been arrested

Bunch of absolute fuckers

I really hope a driver loses it and lashes out.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 24/09/2021 13:15

Was anyone on this thread actually stuck in the jams or do you all simply get a thrill from chatting about punitive treatment of people involved in direct action?
The amount of fuming and hot air here could in itself replace a tanker full of LNG.
I love reading it!

FWBNC · 24/09/2021 13:15

@Summerhillsquare

Excellent. The more attention devoted to the climate crisis the better.
At the expense of the woman who died being driven to hospital by her son last week? Trip should have taken 40 minutes, if she'd hit there in 90 minutes- she would have lived. They were held up fir 6 hours by these idiots and her son had to watch his mum die on the motorway.

Other people have suffered such as missing operations they've been waiting 2+ years for, relatives haven't made it in time to say goodbye to people dying.

That's without mentioning all the people late for work, to collect children & whatever else.

They're a bunch of dangerous loons who need to be locked up for everyone's benefit

MajesticallyAwkward · 24/09/2021 13:18

I sort of get their aim- insulation has its benefits but I'm baffled as to why they've latched onto this specific cause. And their actions are criminal, completely disproportionate and bizarre. How does glueing your hand to a motorway achieve anything?

There have been grants and schemes for years though, it's not like insulation isn't available. I worked on a scheme 12 years ago doing free/heavily discounted insulation and yes there are efficiencies to be gained but I think they are massively exaggerated. I remember numerous instances of people being furious that loft insulation didn't generate heat.

Here we go. Another economically and politically illiterate comment. Unless you have been living under a rock, you would be able to figure out how this inexcusable behaviour impacts the poorest people. And how ineffective it is in achieving anything.

Well the one who was interviewed on GMB the other day apparently doesn’t have his house insulated or even double glazing he said on air!
CuriousaboutSamphire · 24/09/2021 13:19

Don't be sillly @Sirzy Them's facts! Most unfair of you/us to keep pointing out that their demands have already been met, at least in part, for decades!

Many older houses haven't been done because their ageing occupants don't know about the grants or don't want the disruption or, as is all to often the case, don't want to take handouts.

Instead of blocking a port they would do better to go round lncking on doors and offering to help peole take up the government offers, where available, and lobbying for specific changes that would acually do some good

Fully fund and take responsibility for the insulation of all social housing in Britain by 2025.

  • what social housing?
  • the government doesn't own much of it and what is being built has, for decades now, had to meet ever changing energy efficiency regs
  • private rentals have also been bound by energy ratings and this requirement increases in 2025, more by 2013.
  • ARLA and other sector leaders are already lobbying the government for help with funding the changes, nobody in the secotr is ignroing it

Produce within four months a legally binding national plan to fund and take responsibility for the full insulation retrofit, with no externalised costs, of all homes in Britain by 2030.

  • So they do know about the existing 2030 deadlines that the government is already working to?
  • how will the properties requiring work be identified? See above issues persuading some of the needy to take up existing offers
  • how will it be funded?
  • what happens when retrofits cannot be physically achieved (as in many older homes, listed budildings etc)?

If their main aims were better thought out they might get some traction - but not by blocking ports!

If I get a free puffer jacket and leg warmers to stay warm then I’m all for it. If I’m going to starve to death from the disruptive supply chain I at least want to look stylish like the Kids From Fame.

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/09/2021 13:24

@Moneysavvymam

Will you refuse free insulation if they succeed then?
Yes, because my house is already insulated!
Mulhollandmagoo · 24/09/2021 13:25

I actually think I would join the cause if this is what they were doing to be honest! actually practically helping people!

Tealightsandd · 24/09/2021 13:30

Many many thousands of homes are poorly insulated and very inefficient, wasting energy and leading to miserable living conditions for thousands of people, including vulnerable elderly and young people.
Our government are failing in their responsibilities to provide a decent standard of housing to people who need their help.

Well when talking about vulnerable people and miserable living conditions, a better start would be to erm actually provide secure affordable housing. That's the help people need most urgently.

We have a public health housing and homelessness emergency. People can't insulate homes they don't have.

Who's going to suffer the most from this self-indulgent action - blocking the ports? As usual, these actions are going to hit those least able to do anything about government policy - people struggling just to survive.

Unlike the privileged Insulate lot and their XR friends, poorer people can't afford houses with lots of storage space. Unlike Insulate, poorer people can't stock up on food and other essentials. Who suffers when blocades cause food shortages? Not Insulate or XR.

First they stop poorer people getting to work and delay vulnerable ill people getting to hospital. Now they want to stop them eating too. What a bunch of selfish dickheads.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 24/09/2021 13:30

@Mulhollandmagoo you might find thaat your LA, or local community charities, do a drive on this every now and then, depending on the funding rounds.

If you check if your area has grants (check government sites and LA sites) you could do some of this yourself with a facebook shout out! We had one about 4 months ago and are about to do another (That sounds like I know all about it, I don't, I volunteer for a couple of local charities and sit in on some interminable meetings Smile)

Mulhollandmagoo · 24/09/2021 13:30

Sorry....one more!

I think what they stand for makes sense to be honest, its the way they're going about it, what they need to do is go and disrupt Boris Johnson and other cabinet ministers lives, then they would take action - they don't care about the rest of us being shit on, they couldn't have proved that anymore if they tried just recently! too many average Joes have lost too much this past 18 months to have any understanding for being inconvenienced anymore

Annoyedanddissapointed · 24/09/2021 13:31

Well the one who was interviewed on GMB the other day apparently doesn’t have his house insulated or even double glazing he said on air!

That was just... It absolutely shows it's just someones who have too much time on their hands
Idle hands, devil's playground! 😁

Resilience · 24/09/2021 13:32

There are some truly amazing people in the world with a strong moral compass who have fought long and hard for change on the soundest of principles.

A lot of 'activism', however, is very publicly presented virtue signalling designed more to make the activist feel good than it is to achieve change.

Patapouf · 24/09/2021 13:33

Could you not have kept your thoughts in the daily Mail comment section?

What does 'well healed' mean?

Every new thread you start on them is giving them exposure and publicity which is exactly what they need to fuel their protest activities so you're doing them a favour really.

Democratic protest does not disproportionately affect the poor, what a twattish thing to allude to.

Ooh thanks for that! Yep, it confirms I've no insulation/am single glazed. It also seems to think my one bed flat has ten habitable rooms and no mains gas, heating or hot water system. I've been here 9 years and can testify it's only a one bed, and I've got heating and hot water Hmm

Needs renewing in 9 months, so I assume my landlord will be on the case. Maybe they'll insulate it too - it's a grade G at the moment.

Thanks again for the link!
