Ridiculous name for baby

PegorySpeck · 23/09/2021 16:24

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

I think this has got to be a joke. Grin

PaperDolphin · 23/09/2021 19:04

Don't worry. It is a silly name but I have taught kids with worse names and none of their peers battered an eyelid. He won't get bullied for it. He will be known as Stormy and everyone will get used to it and it won't feel as bad for long.

Now for the love of everything holy PLEASE tell us the story/reason behind it.

Somuddled · 23/09/2021 19:05

Stormy isn't a noun. It's also not that bad. Just get the fuck over yourselves. Is he named after the place he was conceived?

ILookAtTheFloor · 23/09/2021 19:05

I can imagine it now, in 30 years time...

"Meet our new Operations Manager, Stormy-Water Jones"

"Do you take thee Stormy-Water Smith to be your lawful wedded husband?"

These babies do grow up to be adults!

You're right to be embarrassed OP.

GemmaRuby · 23/09/2021 19:05

YANBU.
I thought you were being a bit of a dick at first, but now you’ve said the name I’m completely with you.

What was the reason behind the name?

The very best case scenario for this poor baby is that the tabloids publish this, the name gets slated, the parents see it and decide to change it.

HarrisonStickle · 23/09/2021 19:05

@PegorySpeck

His name is Stormy-Water middle name cloud
Just start saying his name, OP. I imagine quite quickly it'll be shortened to Storm/y.

There's a middle aged bloke round my way called Thor. They're just names.

Marmelace · 23/09/2021 19:05

@SofiaMichelle

Wow. That's pretty awful.

Another example of parents who think of their child as their property and only care what they like, not about how it will affect the poor child throughout their life.

Selfish sods.

How will it affect them though? Plenty of people on here liking the name. Anyway according to your logic no one should be allowed to name their children as they will be treating them like property. Maybe we should all have to pick between a list of names you approve off!
GillBiggeloesHair · 23/09/2021 19:06

Stormy water does conjure up a picture of a few bushes and a random turd floating past

Arf at this.

I like Storm though.

Bounce55 · 23/09/2021 19:06

Oh that's fucking horrendous
Poor kid!

Quartz2208 · 23/09/2021 19:06

Stormy means impetuous nature and whilst more commonly a girls name is a gender neutral name that is very 2020

wizzler · 23/09/2021 19:06

Agree with a pp that this is Tabloid fodder. Op you may like to reconsider this thread as if your family see it things may get even worse

Auroreforet · 23/09/2021 19:07

My mil used to refer to my baby as ‘the little one.’
We noticed.
It’s rude and judgemental.

Use the baby’s name.

TheGrumpyGoat · 23/09/2021 19:07

I couldn't, he'd be way too critical

Would never run out of wine though…

BlueJag · 23/09/2021 19:07

I can live with Stormy but the rest? Poor kid. I did think it was going to be worse.

RobertaFirmino · 23/09/2021 19:07

I know a Storm. She's a Doberman.

scrivette · 23/09/2021 19:08

Stormy is cute.

DD has a very 'out there' name and my DF didn't talk to us for over a week when he found out. He also said that he was embarrassed about telling the people the name and he wouldn't refer to her by her full name, just the shortened version.

It really upset me to be honest and when I think back to that time it made what should have been a very happy time very stressful. He is used to the name now and uses it in full.

You don't want to fall out with them over this. Can you shorten it to Stormy when you refer to him or have they said they would only like him to be called the full name? People are far more accepting of different names now, they may comment or be surprised but then they move on.

ImInStealthMode · 23/09/2021 19:08

If this is real it's a preposterous name OP and YANBU.

If it's any comfort I know someone who gave their DC a ridiculously pretentious name. It might have worked if preceded by 'Earl' and followed by 'The Third' but since it wasn't, it was absurd.

The kid got to school age before he declared he hated it, he's in year 3 now and they've changed it by deed poll.

It might not be forever, but shortening to Storm isn't too bad in the meantime.

Pipsquiggle · 23/09/2021 19:09

OK OP - now that you have revealed it, I have to side with you. All 3 words / names sequentially are ridiculous.

Take solace that his name will be shortened to Stormy, Storm or Water which are fine. They are never going to yell 'Stormy Water' across the park.

Yes context for names would be appreciated

DedalusBloom · 23/09/2021 19:09

Ooo I hope there's a double barrelled surname to top that off.
"Do you, Reginald Smith, take Stormy-Water Cloud Barnacle-Harrington to be your lawful, wedded..."?

Xtraincome · 23/09/2021 19:10

@PegorySpeck

His name is Stormy-Water middle name cloud
Oh dear. Just call him Storm? Are they fans of the Kardashians? There's 2 variations of that name within their family
Marmelace · 23/09/2021 19:10

@GemmaRuby

My Great Aunt thought the name Gemma to be new fangled and trashy in the early 90s when my sister named her daughter it. That said she was a very old fashioned woman.
VividImaginationAgain · 23/09/2021 19:10

Do you have to call him Stormy-Water or are you allowed to call him Stormy. I actually think Stormy or Storm are ok. I wasn’t keen on our family’s choice of Carter but it’s grown on me quite quickly and that’s just who he is now.

alexdgr8 · 23/09/2021 19:11

it is a native american/first nations' link ?

noprofessional · 23/09/2021 19:12

OK no, totally with you. I'd be able to say Stormy I think...but if they insist on the full Stormy Water I'd be over and out. What were they thinking?!

WoozySnoozy · 23/09/2021 19:13

Stormy is fine. And it's not pretentious it's kardashian wannabe l
