A Vodafone door to door salesman was doing the rounds on our road earlier with the latest offers that aren't available online apparently... anyway he left his business card and when I saw his name I had to LOL as it was Robin Crowe! His family must love bird names Grin

@EishetChayil

My English teacher was Mrs Page!

I knew a guy in China named Yu Wanke, which would probably raise eyebrows in English-speaking countries...

I had an English teacher called Mrs English.

@LukeEvansWife

Everyone purporting to know these people - given that some of these names pop up in phone ins and websites, that's a mad coincidence!
Actually, it would be odder if none of the names did. Everyone knows people who pop up places like this...almost noone knows people who don't EVER do so.

There was a very famous race care driver here named "Dick Trickle." And we had a patient many years ago at the lab I worked for named "Fanny Gass." IF they had met and married, she would have been "Fanny Gass Trickle." We also had "Maryjane, Stoney and Smokey Hemphill." We KNOW what their parents were thinking...and probably doing when they named their kids! AND a medical group made up of a father and three of his children whose last name was "Wytch." Yep, they were Wytch doctors! I used to collect the odd names that came through. OH, and "Harry Hebert," which doesn't sound funny until you realize that he is Creole, and his last name is pronounced "A bear."

General McArthur called his son Arthur McArthur.

Mynameisthecatwhogotthecream · 24/09/2021 01:41

Years ago we had a husband and wife with the same name-a long the lines of lindsay which can be either although nowadays normally thought of as female. We had to be very careful to select the right records!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/09/2021 03:20

I think some parents do decide to do it deliberately - I know someone with the surname White who considered naming their daughters Rose, Isla and Snow - but decided against it as, on balance, they didn't want the kids having the piss taken out of them constantly. But other parents might have thought it would be a good joke and not worried about the piss-taking and potential bullying.

Moonshine90 · 24/09/2021 04:02

One of my friends is called Phil McCracken. No joke.

RachaelN · 24/09/2021 04:39

cricketmum84 · 24/09/2021 06:57

I once saw on the local news an interview with a young runner named Hugo Quick. That tickled me.

Also a lady at work named Sandie Butt. Married name so not deliberate but surely you would just go back to being called Sandra once you married Mr Butt??

LakieLady · 24/09/2021 07:07

The boyfriend I lived with when I first left home was called Richard Whittington, and he was, of course, called Dick for short.

We got stopped by the police when out late one night. He was driving and they asked him to get out of the car for a chat. After a few minutes, one of the cops walked back to the car and asked which of us was his girlfriend, then asked me to confirm his full name, address and date of birth. The officer looked positively disappointed that he really was Dick Whittington.

The BF once asked his parents why on earth they had called him Richard when his surname was Whittington. His dad replied that his name was Ronald, but everyone called him Dick anyway, so they didn't think it made any difference.

I once worked with someone called Shirley Wurley. And she lived in Purley!

When I worked in a bank we had to greet all the customers by name. The most difficult to say straight faced were Mr & Mrs Badger. Mr & Mrs Squirrel, Mrs Muff, Mr O'nion and Mrs D'eath. Oh and a Mr Hardcock. Straight faced skills were required. Grin

browneyes77 · 24/09/2021 08:11

My daughter has a Jonathon Thomas known as John in her class, I suspect that was deliberate though (parents have that kind of sense of humour).
