Being refused a company car as I'm part time

AIBU to think this is some sort of sex discrimination?
It's an NHS lease car, so I believe minimal expense to the employer other than administrating the scheme. Manager told me today he doesn't think I'll be entitled to apply as I'm part time.
Is this a done thing?

I think you need to check your company's written policy and go from there rather than a manager's say so.
If I was to guess then unless specifically excluded in the t&c, I don't see why you couldn't apply.

user1473878824 · 22/09/2021 19:35

Sex discrimination? You’ve literally just said it’s because your part time.

GreatPotato · 22/09/2021 19:37

I'd say the manager has no idea what he's taking about. Check with whoever applications go to.

icedcoffees · 22/09/2021 19:38

I believe part-time employees have to have access to the same benefits as full-time ones.

@flowery is a good person to ask, though.

Blahdyblahbla · 22/09/2021 19:38

@user1473878824 lots of sex discrimination cases arise from part time employees being treated less favourably, because the majority are women.
@mrshuntgenenotjeremyobviously I can't progress qny further with the application without his sign off though, so frustrating. I'll find a work around I'm sure.

If you want to reference law, you might want to explore the legislation that prevents part time workers from being treated less favourably rather than discrimination.

I don’t know how the NHS works when it comes to cars, I have always been in the private sector and a company car would be part of the package as agreed with the individual rather than an entitlement.

Lasttimeneveragain · 22/09/2021 19:39

Go above his head, ask HR or your union.

MrsColon · 22/09/2021 19:39

That sounds v weird. You need to speak to someone other than your manager.

It might be that the VFM case isn't strong enough for part-time workers, but HR will have the answers. How part time are you?

PlonkyWillyWonky · 22/09/2021 19:40

Eh? Why sex discrimination?
You can't discriminate between PT and FT workers

MiddlesexGirl · 22/09/2021 19:40

Sex discrimination? You’ve literally just said it’s because your part time.
Indirect discrimination. More females are part time.
Cheshirewife · 22/09/2021 19:41

Why should a PT employee get the same benefits as a FT employee? Hardly discrimination.

LittleOwl153 · 22/09/2021 19:42

Do you mean a company car - I.e. one bought by the company for you to drive... which isnrarenin the NHS and dependant on mileage so as a part time employee you may not pass the mileage threshold.

A lease car is essentially a perk available to all - although again may not be tax advantageous to you if you are a low business mileage user.

You manager is likely someone who doest understand why you (or probably anyone else) would want one.

Best bet is to talk to HR and find out if your trust has a lease car agreement - not all do - and if they do who it is with and then speak to them.

@Cheshirewife

Because that's the law Grin
thewhatsit · 22/09/2021 19:44

At my old company you had to be a certain level to partake in that scheme. I never thought it was discrimination though, it was just a perk and the number of perks you got were dependent on your seniority.

Superstar22 · 22/09/2021 19:45

I have an nhs lease car and work 2 days a week and always have. You’ll be fine

SpamIAm · 22/09/2021 19:46

To all those rolling their eyes at the OP claiming sex discrimination, isn't the reason part time workers can't be treated less favourably than full time workers because part time workers are more likely to be female and therefore it would be indirect discrimination against women...?

Can't help with your question OP, but I can't see any reason it wouldn't be available to part time workers. As you say, it doesn't cost your organisation anything.

Superstar22 · 22/09/2021 19:47

As others have said, it’s to do with the salary deductions not taking you below Minimum wage which may be more likely if part time but not if you’re a higher band

surreygirl1987 · 22/09/2021 19:47

OP you are right. Legislation was passed in recent years that states that PT employees must not be treated differently to FT employees (apart from obviously working a smaller proportion). And yes, it can be found to be indirect gender discrimination as most PT staff are women. Cases like these are well-documented and unions have to deal with this all the time. There has to be a better reason than simply that you are part time.

Blossomtoes · 22/09/2021 19:48

Great idea. Piss off the person you’ll be reporting to before you even start the job.
MissyB1 · 22/09/2021 19:48

I think your manager is talking bollocks. Don’t believe them.

Blahdyblahbla · 22/09/2021 19:48

@mrscolon I work 3 days in a peripatetic role, so do more business miles than some full time staff.
@Aprilx thanks for pointing me to the correct terminology, I'm a bit clueless.

Because that's the law, lol.
Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 19:49

Does the job involve driving

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 19:50

You've just answered that
