Being refused a company car as I'm part time

AIBU to think this is some sort of sex discrimination?
It's an NHS lease car, so I believe minimal expense to the employer other than administrating the scheme. Manager told me today he doesn't think I'll be entitled to apply as I'm part time.
Is this a done thing?

That certainly isn’t the law!

Maybe leave the “idiot-splaining” for those who know less than you... (probably no one!)
You may want to report the university who allowed you to qualify if that's the case Grin

PooWillyNameChange · 23/09/2021 07:46

Don't know why everyone is speculating. Organisations will have different schemes with different rules.

OP, is there a number on the portal where you can order the cars so you can confirm details of the scheme? My manager wouldn't have a clue about this so I would check and then let them know if you think you're entitled.

@NavigatingAdolescence

The OP said her manager “didn’t think” she could apply as a part timer.

It’s possible that they have this impression because others have been caught by the NMW issues and mistakenly thinks that’s due to the part time aspect, not the actual earnings. Simple human error is the most likely explanation here.

Unfortunately that wouldn't make as impressive a thread as a sex discrimination in the NHS would. And it wouldn't have led to calls to report the manager to hr or put in issues with the union. Why look for a horse when a t rex is a better name!!

I couldn't get a car through the NHS scheme because I didn't earn enough as a band 3. I felt like replying and saying well isn't that a big red flag that your wages are shit when you're own employer tells you that you can't have a £120 a month Citroen c1.

This He should have checked but still je didn’t say she couldn’t - just that he ‘think’s she can’t. Seems like if she proves she can he’ll be quite happy to approve or whatever it is.

Useless thread IMO until OP finds out more.

@Cheshirewife

Why should a PT employee get the same benefits as a FT employee? Hardly discrimination.
Living up to your name there, a bit. Why pitch up on a thread you know absolutely nothing about?! Embarrassing. 😂

Oh my god, you can’t be serious. I didn’t even see this when I posted my last comment. You have to be lying.

If he says he doesn't THINK you'll be eligible then that means he doesn't know
Perfect.
Go directly to those who manage the scheme and get the facts.
Present him with the facts.

I worked part-time for many years. My understanding is that there are some areas where an employer must treat part-timers equally with full timers (eg rate of pay) and other areas where they don't have to.
So it's not as simple as 'it's against the law to treat part-timers differently'
@MiddlesexGirl wrong. Most of the people who are part time are female.
I think you are @ -ing the wrong person!
