…to think everyone has wheelie bins?

My mum was telling me about her refuse collection and what she described didn’t make sense to me until I found out she doesn’t have a wheelie bin, just an old-style metal dustbin.

Doesn’t everyone have wheelie bins in the UK? What kind of primitive council doesn’t have wheelie bins? It’s 2021!

We have 3 plus a food waste caddy. Rubbish, recycling and food waste collected weekly, garden waste every 2 weeks. No extra charges. It's not very glamorous, but I'm actually very pleased with our council.

We don't as the truck can't get up the narrow road so we have black sacks and pink for recycling.

It's a pain though as fortnightly collections means we need a lot of dustbins!

Our council don't give out wheelie bins. Though a lot of people have them (many bearing the names of other councils!)

We don’t. London.

Communal bins here (city).

Pros: never need to remember bin day.
Cons: not particularly attractive (but then neither are wheelie bins) and they take up a parking space.

We have recycle wheelie bins but nothing for black bin bags. I ended up buying a black wheelie bin to store ours in, but I have to take the bags out and put them by the road.

It confused my poor Dad who put random shit in my black bin, he thought it was a normal one, and then I was scrabbling to get it all back out again.

In our old house, we used to get new bin bags thrown towards the door and on collection day everyone would pile up their rubbish in one spot. No wheelie bins. It didn't matter if you had more bags than usual. Everything was taken. It was good in a sense that you didn't have to worry about over-filling a bin.

Unsightly, though.

We have wheelie bins. Live up a one track road and have a loooong drive. I don't really mind the walk to be honest. You have to pull the wheelie onto the main road for the lorry. My farmer neighbours and in laws put their bins in the back of their car/trailer and drive them down!

I'm from home counties and we had wheelies there too. I think the bags/mixed bins must look more unsightly than homogenous wheelies so not sure why people get snobby about them!

Thighdentitycrisis · 23/09/2021 08:32

We don’t

bigbaggyeyes · 23/09/2021 11:39

My Dad is in Wales abs he doesn't have bins if any sort (except waste food), it's all in black bin bags

HarrietsChariot · 23/09/2021 11:41

Just have those massive communal bins here.
