…to think everyone has wheelie bins?

MasterBeth · 22/09/2021 19:32

My mum was telling me about her refuse collection and what she described didn’t make sense to me until I found out she doesn’t have a wheelie bin, just an old-style metal dustbin.

Doesn’t everyone have wheelie bins in the UK? What kind of primitive council doesn’t have wheelie bins? It’s 2021!

As a PP said, no wheelie bins in Cornwall. However, this should be changing next year, if one believes what the Council says.

HeronLanyon · 22/09/2021 21:50

There are wheelies in Cornwall ! Both. Recycling have recently gone to multiple colour coded bags though. Rubbish still in wheelies lots of places.

thegcatsmother · 22/09/2021 22:02

There aren't in my bit of Cornwall. Recycling is done in different coloured bags provided by the Council, and has been for years, but no food caddies, and normal black sacks for general waste.

AlCalavicci · 22/09/2021 22:04

Well I will never complain about not remembering which bin to put out anymore after reading some of the complicated bags / boxes / bins you lot have .
I have 4 wheelie bins stored in my tiny front yard ( only enough room for bins and nowt else ) each one gets collected every two weeks , black & blue one week , Green & brown the following week
Black - gen waste
Green - food / garden waste
Blue - paper / card
Brown - cans glass some types of plastic

We can also get the council to take away 3 large items a year for free , bed , fridge , tv , microwave etc and £25 for additional three items.

@ShinyThingsDistractMe

South Wales here no Wheely bins.

You store your maximum of 3 black bags a fortnight in whatever you can. I have a bin store.

Then you have green plastic bags for paper and cardboard, glass and cans, all must be seperated in to their own green bag. No mixing.

Them you have a good caddy that goes out weekly.

You also have a white heavy duty green cuttings bag that goes out the same week as the green plastic bags.

Then you have pink bags that go out with the blah bags for plastics.

Its a fucking nightmare remembering what week it is. What goes out and storing bags for 2 weeks at a time!!

There are many private bin companies in my city who will collect weekly.

You must live really close to me because that's exactly what we have
NailsNeedDoing · 22/09/2021 22:06

We don’t have wheelie bins, I think there’d be uproar if our council tried to bring them in.

Mermaidpool · 22/09/2021 22:13

Only wheelie bins here if you buy your own

DemBonesDemBones · 22/09/2021 22:16

Nope, our council wont even consider wheelie bins. I wish they would.

Neonplant · 22/09/2021 22:17

When I lived on main road in London I just put branded council bin bags out and they were collected daily. So I'd say most but kit all have them.

Howshouldibehave · 22/09/2021 22:18

Nope-we have different coloured sacks for recycling and black bin bags for rubbish.

lanthanum · 22/09/2021 22:21

We stayed in a holiday cottage on a very narrow street - there were strict instructions NOT to put the bin out on bin day, as the bin lorry couldn't get down the street if you did - they collected the bins from the gardens.

TartanJumper · 22/09/2021 22:38

Bin bags for my council area too.

user89000005 · 22/09/2021 22:41

We didn't have wheelie bins in London and I can't remember for the life of me how we stored the rubbish, it was weekly collection though so maybe not an issue but I'm sure we'd have more than one bag.

LakieLady · 22/09/2021 22:45

Our council provides a wheelie bin for recycling but nothing for general waste.

If you want a bin, as opposed to just leaving sacks of rubbish out for the foxes, rats and seagulls, you have to buy your own.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 22/09/2021 22:47

No wheelie bins here “because the elderly can’t move them”

Black bags and bags for recycling, and we have a massive seagull problem.

HeronLanyon · 22/09/2021 22:47

theg interesting. We just lost Cornwall recycling wheelies and got the dreaded bags although good they are weighted so don’t blow away ! Noticed the big recycling centre is very busy as so many just run out of room with only fortnightly recycling collections and all local/car park recycling bins removed. Although some supermarkets have recently brought theirs back. Complex.

Skysblue · 22/09/2021 22:54

My council in South East England doesn’t. Binmen can’t reach easily to the bottom of a wheelie bin, it puts strain on their back. So a council has to buy a fleet of completely different type of wheelie bin lifting vehicles. Many of the councils have chosen not to spend that money. We’ve been told thst if we choose to put our rubbish out in wheelie bins, the bin men have been instructed to only remove the top bag and leave the rest.

Chasingsquirrels · 22/09/2021 23:04

East Cambs

  • general waste: Black plastic bags, collected weekly (I generally have 1 small bag a week, slightly bigger than a old style carrier bag)
  • recycling wheelie bin, glass, tins, paper, card, hard plastics: collected fortnightly.
  • Green wheelie bin, garden waste, food waste - peelings, raw or cooked meat etc, bedding from vegetarian animals (I put hen bedding & waste in it): collected fortnightly and composted - you can collect the resultant "soil improver" from the facility for free.
daisyjgrey · 23/09/2021 06:33

We have them but the council won't use them for collections, so we have them for storage and then have to take the bags out and leave them on the road for collections. My parents have the same.

Soubriquet · 23/09/2021 06:42

We don’t

Lincolnshire area. We still get a delivery of black and green bags twice a year. Gardening waste collection is only available in a few small areas and we have to pay to use that system

The bags are put out in the street twice a week

User45829057 · 23/09/2021 06:42

Some terrace house streets in our town use bin bags and clear bags for recycling as there is no space for bins, bags provided by council

User45829057 · 23/09/2021 06:43

We pay about £55 a year for garden bin or you can have a couple of bags for less money

KingdomScrolls · 23/09/2021 06:44

Our area doesn't have wheelie bins, we bought one to keep the bags in between collections but the Bin men won't empty it, we have to take the bags out and put them on the street

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 23/09/2021 06:47

They have them here (Edinburgh) but only for houses and ground-floor flats. Our flat is first floor and we have smallish plastic recycling boxes, food caddies and ‘gull-proof’ sacks.

Although apparently the council is getting rid of all this and putting in communal bin hubs.

HeronLanyon · 23/09/2021 06:49

Our local seagulls and foxes would be disgusted if we ever had wheelie bins (not that we could no front gardens or side passages etc). Mind you the daily street cleaners’ jobs would be easier. The seagulls especially can creat havoc overnight. We’re supposed to put bags out before 7am and not night before but it’s unrealistic for many who aren’t up/elderly/shift working etc.
Foxes tend to be neater with their night raids and just trot off with an old rag or tatty shoe or some other random thing.
