…to think everyone has wheelie bins?

My mum was telling me about her refuse collection and what she described didn’t make sense to me until I found out she doesn’t have a wheelie bin, just an old-style metal dustbin.

Doesn’t everyone have wheelie bins in the UK? What kind of primitive council doesn’t have wheelie bins? It’s 2021!

South Wales here no Wheely bins.

You store your maximum of 3 black bags a fortnight in whatever you can. I have a bin store.

Then you have green plastic bags for paper and cardboard, glass and cans, all must be seperated in to their own green bag. No mixing.

Them you have a good caddy that goes out weekly.

You also have a white heavy duty green cuttings bag that goes out the same week as the green plastic bags.

Then you have pink bags that go out with the blah bags for plastics.

Its a fucking nightmare remembering what week it is. What goes out and storing bags for 2 weeks at a time!!

There are many private bin companies in my city who will collect weekly.

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 20:01

Uhtredsonofuhtred, we only produce one bag of rubbish a week which gets collected weekly, it wouldn't smell anyway cos food stuff goes in food bin

PaperMonster · 22/09/2021 20:01

Some of the properties in our village don’t have wheelie bins purely down to their location. When our council introduced wheelie bins I was a bit concerned about where I could actually put them and they said I could change to the special bags if I wanted.

TheSpiral · 22/09/2021 20:01

Nope. Large town in Essex. No wheelie bins. We just put bin bags outside.

Isahlo · 22/09/2021 20:02

Didn’t have them in Surrey do have them in devon

TheSpiral · 22/09/2021 20:04

@Tangledtresses

We also have fortnight collections So the bin bag peoples houses must stink!! I mean where the hell do they keep them ?
We keep ours in a metal bin in the back garden. It’s not a wheelie bin. Then put one or two bin bags out every fortnight. They don’t smell particularly bad because they don’t have food waste which goes in the food recycling bin, which is collected every week. And they don’t have glass, paper or tin in either, so there isn’t really that much other rubbish.
gingerninja99 · 22/09/2021 20:05

In my area we don't have wheelie bins unless you buy them direct yourself so a lot round my way either have the small old style bins or just leave bags out for collection

ElectricDeChocobo · 22/09/2021 20:07

We have big communal bins here, same with my last flat.

makkapakka212 · 22/09/2021 20:08

Our black wheelie bin is collected fortnightly, we have two in nappies and I can't imagine where we would keep bin bags without a wheelie bin, maybe in the garage? But if it's for terraced house wtf do you do with your rubbish until bin day?

Bert2020 · 22/09/2021 20:09

A friend doesn’t as they have nowhere to store them and her row have steps so the council issues them, worked out pretty quickly it didn’t work and came back to collect them a few weeks later.

reluctantbrit · 22/09/2021 20:11

We have wheelie bins because our local fox population is going through all rubbish each night and without a wheelie bin. we would have disaster each morning.

We started with. smaller ones with a lid but when the council moved to bi-monthly collections years ago. they. were too small. Most houses around here have wheelie bins in their driveway/front garden to store rubbish. One road with. tiny front gardens have smaller bins in the garden behind and carry the bags through the front door.

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 20:12

Our rubbish doesn't really smell to be honest

I think you probably live in the same place as me. Didn’t know there were private bin companies though!
BlaiseAnais · 22/09/2021 20:14

We have black bags as no outside space to store wheels bins (or the black bags Envy)

RupertTheCat · 22/09/2021 20:14

@Hardbackwriter I think we may live in the same place, start with R?

bengalcat · 22/09/2021 20:14

Terraced houses in our London street - there is just enough room in people’s front bits for wheelie bins so some have them but not all - we don’t - keep a dustbin in back garden and put black bags and recycling out weekly .

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/09/2021 20:17

@MasterBeth

On holiday in Cornwall this year. Seaside town, steep hills, narrow streets, no gardens - wheelie bins!
MIL in cornwall. No wheelie bins. Just the reusable seagull proof sacks. You put your black sack inside.
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/09/2021 20:18

We don’t. We aren’t allowed them, just black bags.

esloquehay · 22/09/2021 20:19

We don't. 🤷

RandomUsernameHere · 22/09/2021 20:21

We have one thankfully. Where we live the seagulls would peck open any bin bags left out within 5 minutes!

JosiahJosiahKate · 22/09/2021 20:23

Terraced house, no front garden, no wheelie bin.

RosiePosieDozy · 22/09/2021 20:23

I had no idea not everyone uses dustbins. Wow. What an eye opener.

SurreyMumOfOne · 22/09/2021 20:23

None in Wandsworth. No where to keep them.

Notdoingthis · 22/09/2021 20:25

Not us, the streets are too narrow. We can leave binbags out but in Cornwall you can't because of the seagulls.

RuthW · 22/09/2021 20:25

Anyone with a terrace house doesnt have one here.
