Friend is seperated. Her ex has the kids EOW and takes them out once a week each individually. All good. Except she insists on calling the time he spends with their dd as a Daddy Daughter Date. I cannot satisfactorily explain why but it winds me up! It just sounds wrong somehow, not in an inappropriate way dont get me wrong, just nauseating and twee and I get the ick whenever she says it. FYI when he does the same with her son she doesnt call that a Daddy Son Date. She doesnt say it about her and her dd when they go out but does call it a Mummy Son Date when its her and the boy.....vom....

AIBU for hating this phrase? I know IABU for getting so wound up over something that does not impact me in anyway!

A date is literally a certain day it has no sexual meaning to it.

That's one meaning of the word date.

Another meaning, and the meaning this woman mosr definitely seems to mean, is a romantic/sexual meeting.

This phrase puts me in mind of terms I've seen accidentally on porn sites ... I can't disassociate them and I find ot ultra creepy, and inappropriate.

SleepingBunnies21 · 22/09/2021 20:09

It's not a date, between romantic or potentially romantic partners and should not be used in this context.

SleepingBunnies21 · 22/09/2021 20:10

(I don't mean the woman means it in a sexual or romantic way), just that her use of the word "date" is that meaning (not the "certain day" meaning).

Sorry - posted too soon. But what does being a single parent have to do with anything being a 'date'? Happy to be told that I'm being really thick.

Lotusmonster · 22/09/2021 20:13

It is a bit cringe but hardly a big deal. You just have to grit your teeth.😬

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 22/09/2021 20:15

Has anyone ever used or heard used "daddy son date"?
Surely if it's date as in quality time with your child then if it's a daughter it's daddy daughter and if it's a son it's daddy son. Right?
Except it's not is it? It's just daddy daughter. Dad doesn't go on a 'date' with his son. In America where this whole daddy daughter gubbbins seems to have started it is deeply disturbing with dates with daddy and 'purity balls' .
Seriously fucked up imo and not something to be copied!

tillytoodles1 · 22/09/2021 20:19

My brother lives in America and they have Daddy/Daughter and Mommy/Son dates every year. Basically you get dressesd up and go out for dinner together. I think its sweet.

Dahlietta · 22/09/2021 20:24

@Block, I think she meant like ‘every single one’.

God this is so creepy. You don't date your daughter, the language of adult relationships should be used about the relationship between a child and their parent. What's next a purity ring? Him deciding who she has a relationship with? Creepy, creepy, creepy.

CallmeHendricks · 22/09/2021 20:34

No, that would grate with me too.

PaleGreenGhost · 22/09/2021 20:34

I think it's gross sorry! The parent is there to parent their child. He's her dad; and not living with her does not let him off the hook for parenting all of her, not just the fun bits.

"Date" has many connotations which are just wrong for the parent-child relationship. Incest aside, I hate the implication that the daughter ought to perform in some way for the man. Perform femininity, best behaviour, charm.

What if daughter is a lesbian? Or doesn't want to dress up for men?

I think it's lovely to get on with your parents and to want to hang out socially. Special one to one time can be really beneficial too. But why stuff it full of dubious patriarchal messages?

Iflyaway · 22/09/2021 20:35

Let them call it what they want.

Without putting your spin on it.

Why are you so involved anyway. Got nothing better to do?

user147856 · 22/09/2021 20:36

I see this parental-child social interaction being called a 'date' on American websites.

it is creepy to us because of course normally a 'date' has romantic connotations and in the UK this does not normally extend to parent-child or even platonic friends meeting up.

Normal expression in the UK would be 'I went out for a meal/to the cinema etc with xyz', since that is longer to formulate there may be an element of laziness in the use of the word 'date', but mostly I think it is a 'cutesy' romanticisation of a non-romantic relationship.

YANBU OP.

tillytoodles1 · 22/09/2021 20:39

I dont know, its just something they do.

lazyarse123 · 22/09/2021 20:41

Gross it's on a par with baby daddy.

TracyLords · 22/09/2021 20:41

My 5 year old son always asks for mummy/Ben dates. We usually go for hot chocolate. I think he saw it on YouTube and wanted one of those dates with me. Im

TracyLords · 22/09/2021 20:42

He also has daddy/Ben dates too!

SecretWitch · 22/09/2021 20:45

@MobyDicksTinyCanoe

For those frothing at the dad HE isn't the one saying it....

I agree it is cringey op. It seems to have floated over from America along with calling school discos ' proms' amd baby showers.

Just no.

I live in the US. Never heard this used. We just call it “hanging out with Dad”.

The phrase definitely grates on me though.

San141 · 22/09/2021 20:48

Totally get you..yet last summer I had 'date' night with 2 of my 4 children.. we dressed up and went for a meal that we wouldn't normally do! Kids were 3 and 14 ( one male and one female) fantastic experience!!

Rainallnight · 22/09/2021 20:52

@Block yes, as @Dahlietta says, I mean ‘each and every parent’. Nothing to do with single parents! Smile

Enough4me · 22/09/2021 20:53

Yuk, YANBU.

Block · 22/09/2021 20:54

@Handsoffstrikesagain

This ick is normally said by the same people that refer to little girls as prinny and claim that their 5 year old is their ‘bestie’. It’s all just word vom.
"Prinny"? I have been alive for 50 years (20 of them on MN), and this is the first time I have heard this word.
