To not know how to get rid of this slug in my lounge?

Dailywalk · 22/09/2021 08:05

Tell tale slug trails on the lounge carpet every morning! It’s disgusting.

No idea how slug is getting in or where it’s going. How do I get rid and stop it returning. (I say ‘it’ there could be while gang of them! Shock)

DH wants to out down salt but think this will end up with exploded slug which would be even worse. Where is it coming from and how do I get rid of it?

they like beer, so could you rig up a beer trap to catch them in?
To work out where they are coming from can you not follow the trail backwards? If not, you could use something like flour around the edges of your room and see if you can track them that way.

Cocomarine · 22/09/2021 08:09

Clear silicone from a tube to seal all along under the skirting board - even when it looks like no gap - greatly reduced my slug issue. Not eliminated though 😭

burritofan · 22/09/2021 08:11

Do you eat in there? Coming in for crumbs and snacks? Is it damp?

They can stretch quite thin to ooze through small gaps. Put copper tape around skirting, windowsills, fireplace, any tiny crack or crevice they might sneak in through. Then give everything a good Hoover.

LeroyJenkinssss · 22/09/2021 08:11

There will be a few I’m afraid. They could be coming through the smallest gap. We silicone sealed (like the bathroom stuff) between the floor/wall and the skirting board in the kitchen and that stopped most of them. Is there anything like that in the living room?

DillonPanthersTexas · 22/09/2021 08:13

Thought the thread title was referring to the DH, I'm disappointed we are talking about a shell-less terrestrial gastropod mollus.

Mermaidwaves · 22/09/2021 08:14

I was inundated with slugs in my kitchen, it was awful! They come out at night. My only answer was to put down slug pellets which isn't good if you have pets or young kids. It did work though and I put them along gaps and places where I thought they were getting in.

VestaTilley · 22/09/2021 08:39

We get them in our kitchen. It’s vile. They come in through a hole at the bottom of our wooden door - I put salt beneath the hole. It’s a rented house, so we can’t do much else, but we’re hoping to move soon and hope not to have this problem there!

Thingsdogetbetter · 22/09/2021 08:48

Salt in any gaps - regularly. They don't explode, just avoid the salt. If one gets in, flush it down the loo. If you put it back outside (even if you throw it over the garden wall), it'll just come in again. Slugs and snails are creatures of habit, with amazing homing instincts.

Biscuits1 · 22/09/2021 08:53

This happened to me and then one night I had woken up randomly and went downstairs and it was there so I caught it. So maybe set an alarm for the middle of the night.

Thought you were going to say you found it in your bed!!

Keep your lights on for a few nights. They only venture out in the dark. They will get bored and bugger off elsewhere to do whatever it is slugs do.

sandgrown · 22/09/2021 09:16

I have one in my dining room . I just can’t spot it or where it gets in . I am going to put salt around all the doors and hope for the best . I can’t use slug pellets as the dog would eat them!

Moofart · 22/09/2021 09:22

I could have written your post OP. Every morning a new slug trail. A few times I ha stayed up late and caught them. I sellotaped the bottom of the door where I suspected they were coming through, not a long term solution obviously. It held them back for a few days but this morning I noticed a new slug trail in a different place. Waaaaa!

PartyPotato · 22/09/2021 09:24

This happened to us last year, caught the slug with beer in the end!

saleorbouy · 22/09/2021 09:26

Put a slug buffet of salad leaves and veg peelings in the room and tempt them for a midnight feast. Hopefully they will still be there in the morning and you can get rid of them outside.
Try and seal up gaps, sprinkle salt on the door steps.
Do you have flower borders, pots that are close to your house walls/doors. Maybe try and discourage them from these areas. They don't like small sharp grit/gravel, crushed egg shells, or copper.

blubberball · 22/09/2021 09:32

Watching with interest, as we have slugs in the kitchen. I put them outside when I catch them in the act of squelching around the kitchen. I need a hedgehog, I think they eat slugs?

zafferana · 22/09/2021 09:33

Is there an outside door with a slight gap underneath it OP? I used to live in a house that would get slugs in the kitchen at night and they'd come in under the door. To get rid of them you could fit a draught excluder, or just put a line of cheap cooking salt along the base of the door. Salt doesn't explode them, but it will deter them. If this isn't the issue and there is no outside door, I'd have a really good search all along the walls for any gaps/holes they could be coming in through and then silicone them up (as suggested above).

ComDummings · 22/09/2021 09:34

I read the title as slug in my tongue Envy (not envy)
Anyway I’m not sure how, they’re sneaky little pricks!

mokojolo · 22/09/2021 09:48

I put copper flashing on my skirting boards and thresholds. Worked well

110APiccadilly · 22/09/2021 09:50

Salt doesn't explode them, it just sort of desiccates them. However, be careful if you're putting it on/near wood as I put it at the bottom of the stairs and it drew moisture out of the air and now the bottom of the stairs is slightly damp!! Solved one problem but caused another.

InvisibleDragon · 22/09/2021 10:38

Stay up late and catch it in the act?

We moved recently and unfortunately our kitchen door has space for them to squeeze under. DH and I have both accidentally stepped on one Shock

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 22/09/2021 11:24

Slugs are the thing I hate most in the world. They make me gag. Line your room with salt. (Also handy for protection against bad spirits according to my Witchy friend so even if it doesn't work you'll be on to a winner)

AutistGoth · 22/09/2021 11:33

A more humane method: Place rinds of orange or melon around the room at various points. They love fruit rind. It will attract them and then you can dispose of the rinds (slugs and all) in your compost heap.

There's no need to kill them, just move them to a compost bin. They are part of the ecosystem.

EllieLondon5 · 22/09/2021 11:36

They’re gross. But salt is kind of mean.

Not only under the skirting board, seal the joins too! My kitchen had a slug problem and one night I discovered two slugs halfway through the almost invisible gap in the corner of the room...
