To not know how to get rid of this slug in my lounge?

Dailywalk · 22/09/2021 08:05

Tell tale slug trails on the lounge carpet every morning! It’s disgusting.

No idea how slug is getting in or where it’s going. How do I get rid and stop it returning. (I say ‘it’ there could be while gang of them! Shock)

DH wants to out down salt but think this will end up with exploded slug which would be even worse. Where is it coming from and how do I get rid of it?

Love and hugs by the way. Though I know that they are generally discouraged on MN. I know from experience how shocking it is to find that slugs have invaded your home. Flowers Brew Cake

garlicandsapphires · 22/09/2021 11:47

Every morning I have horrid slime trails around my back door. (That sounds weirder and more horrid than it should Confused)
I’m going to try copper flashing. It’ll match my trendy Nigella style pans Grin

@AnyFucker

Keep your lights on for a few nights. They only venture out in the dark. They will get bored and bugger off elsewhere to do whatever it is slugs do.
I agree with this. We had a slug problem in out living room when we first moved to our house. We'd been there for just over a year when our daughter was born. She wasn't a great night time sleeper (as many newborns aren't) and we'd often take it in turns to sit up with her downstairs through the night. We never saw the slugs and after doing this for a few months they never returned. I concluded that this was because we'd had the light on through the night and they got fed up and went elsewhere. We've been 3 years slug free now.

If you ever accidentally tread on one you find they somehow integrate themselves into your being. And your sock becomes a complete write off if you happen to be wearing one.

Gaps under doors and round skirting boards are the obvious ones. Also air bricks or fire places. Are the edges of the carpet all tacked down and tight against the skirting board/ wall?

miamiibiza · 22/09/2021 12:40

This happened in my Mum's house once. The slugs were under the sofa 🤮

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 22/09/2021 12:44

We had them in the living room. It wasn't just the one there were loads. No idea where they came from but now I leave the light on and haven't seen them for over a year

MolyHolyGuacamole · 22/09/2021 12:45

I have an absolute phobia, so if it were me I'd pack a small bag and leave to never return, good luck.

Honestly I'd rather my house was haunted that inhabited by slugs

@ComDummings

I read the title as slug in my tongue Envy (not envy) Anyway I’m not sure how, they’re sneaky little pricks!
Me too! Salt or used coffee grounds.

I trod on a snail recently. There was an audible pop as it exited its shell. Sorry.
ColorMagicBarbie · 22/09/2021 12:56

Can you not follow the slime trail?

Dodie66 · 22/09/2021 13:03

I had that, I got up in the night with a torch and it was in the middle of the floor so out he went 🙂

newtothenet · 22/09/2021 13:04

This is my life!! Ours are coming in through the patio doors. I've added a foam seal to the door but it hasn't helped. I think I'll try leaving the light on for a few nights. Or maybe sellotaping the door each evening?? My question is, though, (and I'm not sure I want to know the answer), do they come in and wander about then leave, or do they stay in the house in the daytime? The trails suggest they live outdoors but why do they bother coming in? Don't they eat outdoor bugs or leaves or something??

Lily78123 · 22/09/2021 13:34

I accidentally squashed one with bare feet in the middle of night. Shock We were slug free for about 4 days and now a new one has appeared. They seem to get in somewhere through the front door, I really don’t understand how. Salt didn’t do a thing, slug repellants either. :/

scarletslass · 22/09/2021 14:00

DPs PlayStation wasn't working the other day, so he opened it up to have a look. Found two dead slugs in there, one recently deceased and the other practically mummified Envy

FourteenSixteenTwentyTwo · 22/09/2021 14:21

I stood on one, bare footed, whilst in labour so I have a very strong hatred of them.

I’ve yet to find anything that works effectively, but will give the lights on a try. I blocked up one gap and they just found a new one to get through. I’m considering a pet toad as a lesser of house evils.

CloudsOfCeonothus · 22/09/2021 14:34

Had to click on your thread after I saw:

To not know how to get rid of this slug on my tongue? Shock

So, you can see, it could be much worse Grin

You have my sympathies! This has happened to me with a lounge infested slug fest that had to be walked through to the loo each night. I bought slippers after the first barefoot squishing Confused

I tried salt, but the slug 'explosions' & carcass left on the carpet each night was worse.

We solved it by...........

...... moving house Grin

Well, we were moving anyway.

Niffler92 · 22/09/2021 16:56

I get them in my kitchen I used to get up and throw them outside but I’m sure the same ones came back. The only way I reduced them was gathering them
Up and feeding to the chickens in the mornings

Niffler92 · 22/09/2021 16:58

Mine seem to live in the foundations
And come
In the back of the cupboards where bots of my kitchen is bare wall.

Dailywalk · 22/09/2021 21:36

Oh thank you for all your suggestions! I’ve finally caught up with all your replies.
Oh!! those of you that thought the slugs were on my tongue Envy
Think keeping lights on is my favourite suggestion as I can do that tonight and can’t create do any harm can it?
I really don’t like the idea of creating a buffet for them. What if I don’t catch them in the act and they go off and tell their mates??
Copper might be good option too. Or else packing my bags and leaving the house forever! Grin

I don't believe there's ever just the one, I was watching tv on the sofa one night and 3 appeared and were climbing up it 🤢I rememv3d them to across the road i dont lnow how many times before resorting to lightning downstairs up like blackpool eluminations !

Cryalot2 · 22/09/2021 23:45

We have the horrid blighters in the garden. They are poisonous to dogs and mine is an inquisitive sort that thinks most things are food. The copper tape hasn't worked. Have used salt and ds has kept lawn ( if you would call it that)cut to within an inch of it's life. Had slug traps which caught some. Dh has been very liberal with pet friendly slug pellets. Disposed of a couple down loo early one morning and didn't flush and later a blighter had crawled up on the loo seat. That will teach me as spent ages cleaning it.
A lot of people seem to have trouble and I think they are resilient. Hateful things .

Theoldprospector · 22/09/2021 23:46

What is that they want? What have they come inside for?

Mistressofnone · 22/09/2021 23:49

We have this problem too. Our rug looks like an ice rink every morning! I have stepped on them barefoot in the night too it's awful.

Sometimes their trail stops and starts in the middle so we can't trace it back. Do they switch the trail on like a red arrow?

We are remortgaging to get our kitchen redone and hopefully work out their entry points.

I hate slugs they are so unattractive.

Tostig · 23/09/2021 13:17

I've had the trails in my kitchen. Now after hoovering I put Dettol spray along the skirting boards and then put newspaper on the floor. Newspaper makes it difficult for them to move, so they don't come in so much. I'll try leaving a light on next, thank you for the idea.
