Asked to leave asda because of folded manual scooter

So, I took my son to school this morning on a manual push scooter that folds into a back pack and then needed to quick get some milk from Asda. After dropping him off I went to asda and then started to fold the scooter up. They asked me to leave it at the door I said it might be stolen there.
Long story short I had to leave the shop.
Went back later when I had to pick him up and they told me when I went in that it was a health and safety risk, but surely leaving it next to the door unattended is even more of a risk? What if someone tripped on it.
I said I'm an adult with my kids scooter folded up, my kid wasn't there.
He said it would be age discrimination against younger people if he hold me and not them, but isn't making assumptions about younger people discrimination?
Very strange.

Well I suppose this way it's a consistent policy and they can't be accused of making assumptions about different ages. Just no scooters allowed. I can see why you were annoyed though as it did inconvenience you.

LukeEvansWife · 21/09/2021 19:04

If they told you that, presumably that it what they have been told to do. Write to head office if it’s an issue

TimeForTeaAndG · 21/09/2021 19:06

Why not fold it up before you get to the door and put it in a back pack?

WoozySnoozy · 21/09/2021 19:09

they can't ban scooters for some people and not others

vastgrandupgrade · 21/09/2021 19:14

They’ve probably had problems with them, so have a blanket rule. If they don’t have the same rule for everyone, people will just argue and argue the toss about it.

Livelovebehappy · 21/09/2021 19:15

I’m guessing the issue was that you hadn’t folded the scooter up when you got there. Had it already been folded, they probably wouldn’t have mentioned it.

Tailendofsummer · 21/09/2021 19:17

Walk out, put it in the back pack, walk back in.

Thecommentsmakemechuckle · 21/09/2021 19:17

I took my daughter to Asda after school today, she took her scooter there and asked the security guard if she could pop it next to his station thing as we didn’t have the lock, he was happy enough to guard it 😂 Point of that wee story is that this is can’t be an across the board rule 🤷‍♀️

melj1213 · 21/09/2021 19:19

I work in a supermarket, we have this rule too - no bikes or scooters are allowed in the store - it doesn't matter if you're 6 or 106, you can't bring them in - and we cant go ignoring the rules for one person and not others because either we get discrimination claims or people start arguing with colleagues who are just enforcing the rules and it puts them at risk.

PumpkinKlNG · 21/09/2021 19:19

Maybe because some people fold it to get through the door then use it once inside, that’s probably why they said it’s not allowed in.

Otherwise known as people doing the job for which they are paid. And frankly they aren’t going to risk their job for a customern
Daphnise · 21/09/2021 19:52

I am very glad those things are not allowed in Asda, as I find them a nuisance- whether being ridden by horrible, clumsy children or carried.

It's exactly that. My store have the same rule. We had a couple of kids on heelys barrel into a heavily pregnant woman and knock her flying after we repeatedly told the parents to stop them whizzing about on them. She was taken to hospital in an ambulance as she fell heavily on her side.

Nothing with wheels comes in now. Only exceptions are trollies, prams and wheelchairs/mobility scooters.

No scooters, no bikes no heelys. No, we don't care if your little darling has no other shoes. No, we don't trust you to carry it. Too many parents take the piss. I've seen dads pissing about in the aisles with their kids scooter.

Who gets in trouble if there's an accident causes by someone on a scooter? It won't be the customer, it will be the "jobsworth" that let them in. Why should anyone risk their job by breaking the rules for a complete stranger. Calling someone a jobsworth is very entitled.
Babymamamama · 21/09/2021 20:11

I thought electric scooters were illegal on public roads and pavements (missing the point of the thread Grin)…

You think (and I use that word very loosely) that it’s Dave on Security who decides on nationwide policy for what is or isn’t allowed in a particular supermarket? 🙄

Driftingblue · 21/09/2021 21:06

Fold it and put it in a bag before you enter the store
Or
Buy a lock and lock it outside the store

This is not a complicated problem

baffledcoconut · 21/09/2021 21:16

I can see their point.

At the same time they sell scooters so... it’s a bit difficult.

Next time just shove it in a rucksack before you go in.

Yeah but they sell toilet paper too but I’m sure they would object to a customer wiping their arse in the store
DaisyDozyDee · 21/09/2021 21:29

You can get a pocket scooter lock then lock it up outside. Much easier than carrying it around the shop anyway.

Belledan1 · 22/09/2021 04:02

I used to put my son's in the trolley.

They sell knives too, doesn't mean they'd be happy with a customer wandering round with knives.
