Asked to leave asda because of folded manual scooter

fashu · 21/09/2021 19:01

So, I took my son to school this morning on a manual push scooter that folds into a back pack and then needed to quick get some milk from Asda. After dropping him off I went to asda and then started to fold the scooter up. They asked me to leave it at the door I said it might be stolen there.
Long story short I had to leave the shop.
Went back later when I had to pick him up and they told me when I went in that it was a health and safety risk, but surely leaving it next to the door unattended is even more of a risk? What if someone tripped on it.
I said I'm an adult with my kids scooter folded up, my kid wasn't there.
He said it would be age discrimination against younger people if he hold me and not them, but isn't making assumptions about younger people discrimination?
Very strange.

They always make DS leave his with the security guards on the door - I think they are unlikely to be stolen from there.

londonrach · 22/09/2021 07:25

Yabu. Most shops ban then. I leave dd scooter next to the security guard. It cost £1 from the tip so not too upset if stolen. Always then when we finished shopping.

RazorSharp · 22/09/2021 07:37

I think it's fair enough, they're too dangerous in shops.

notacooldad · 22/09/2021 07:37

You mean they did what they are bein paid to do?

At the same time they sell scooters so... it’s a bit difficult what's difficult? I dont get it?

KittenKong · 22/09/2021 07:39

Last time I was shopping there was two children on scooters flying around the store. Grrrr.

But yes, I wouldn’t leave it in case it got stolen. Is a walked a few feet back, put the scooter in the bag and returned to the shop.

Shade17 · 22/09/2021 07:45

I used to put my son's in the trolley.

That’s beyond grim

Not at all.

If there's an accident who gets the blame? It can't be one rule for one, one for another. I think it's great they've banned them in store.

TractorAndHeadphones · 22/09/2021 07:54

I’m confused - weren’t you stopped both times with and without your son?
So what’s with the discrimination?

CornishTiger · 22/09/2021 07:56

You were in the process of folding it up to go in a backpack and weren’t actually using it in store?

If that’s the case complain. Ridiculous. And yes probably be pinched if left at store entrance.

If you were planning on using it then totally different matter but you weren’t!

bumblingbovine49 · 22/09/2021 08:21

@melj1213

I work in a supermarket, we have this rule too - no bikes or scooters are allowed in the store - it doesn't matter if you're 6 or 106, you can't bring them in - and we cant go ignoring the rules for one person and not others because either we get discrimination claims or people start arguing with colleagues who are just enforcing the rules and it puts them at risk.
This sort of blanket rule makes me think of Kafka. It is absolutely bonkers to stop you entering a store because you have a folded scooter in a bag you are carrying. If the objection is that the bag is too bulky then you need to stop everyone who has a big bag from putting it in a trolley or carrying it while they shop.

I'd have gone outside, put the scooter on the bag an gone in to do my shopping

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 08:25

Woozysnoozy, so how does one get a purchased scooter out of the shop if you're not allowed to carry scooters around?

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 08:26

Shade17- what's so grim about that, are you planning on licking the trolley

BrendaBubbles · 22/09/2021 08:49

they can't ban scooters for some people and not others

Shops make rules like that all the time. “Only two schoolchildren in the store at any one time.”

CounsellorTroi · 22/09/2021 09:05

I’m sure my local Tesco Extra used to have assistants on roller skates, but I haven’t seen them in a while.

gogohm · 22/09/2021 10:02

If it was folded up and in a bag they wouldn't have known you had it with you, lesson learned, fold it up before you get to the entrance

@bumblingbovine49 But the point is that that OP didn't already have the scooter in a bag when she walked in - which is why she was asked to leave it at the front of the store.

If it was already in a bag then the security guard would have not known it was there or at the very least had plausible deniability wrt not stopping the OP from taking it into the store, but if she is blatantly carrying it in then the security guard has to apply the "no scooter/bikes in store" rule.

LukeEvansWife · 22/09/2021 10:42

It isn't the staff's fault though

SusieBob · 22/09/2021 10:44

Absolutely no issue with shops saying that you can't ride scooters in the shop.

Saying that you can't carry a folded up scooter around in a shop is just stupid though.

melj1213 · 22/09/2021 10:46

@BrendaBubbles

they can't ban scooters for some people and not others

Shops make rules like that all the time. “Only two schoolchildren in the store at any one time.”

But that rule applies to all school children therefore it isn't discriminatory - just like the scooter rule applies to everyone.

If the rule was "only two school children from X school in the store at any one time" then it would be discriminatory as it singles out one specific group (kids from X school) just like how if the "no scooter" rule was only applied to teenagers and not to everyone bringing a scooter into the store.

FreeBritnee · 22/09/2021 10:49

How would they know it was folded and in a rucksack?

Hoppinggreen · 22/09/2021 10:53

@baffledcoconut

I can see their point.

At the same time they sell scooters so... it’s a bit difficult.

Next time just shove it in a rucksack before you go in.

They sell condoms too
CovidCorvid · 22/09/2021 10:53

@PumpkinKlNG

Maybe because some people fold it to get through the door then use it once inside, that’s probably why they said it’s not allowed in.
This. They’ve had an issue with similar incidents in Asda. I saw a video and about 10 teens were riding BMX type bikes and scooters round the store full speed screaming abuse at customers and fighting with staff. So guess they’re being ultra strict now.
LemonTT · 22/09/2021 10:53

Good on Asda. Any chance we can get them off pavements too.
