How would you fix the worlds problems?

I think i have it, I really do.
Everyone is using food banks, right? unemployment is rife. Depression, anxiety, suicide. Obesity. Anti social behaviour and crime rates.

Okay. Are you ready?

Community gardens and orchards. Free to pick what you like, children's and adults clubs to teach people when to pick, sow, etc. Not just food but flowers. Trees. Perenials such as rhubarb, kale and others. I really think that it could work.

I saw a TED Talk about a town who has a whole community or people who grow food in random places wherever there is a free bit of grass and I swear to god I think it could work really well.

I actually can't see a problem arising and if the problem is 'the economy' well how? Because when people are struggling to pay for food I really dgaf about the economy.
Allotments are a nice idea but many are full and have waiting lists of Years and years.

We have a couple of small, secret almost community gardens in a few big parks in our city and they are really cute, work well. Nobody ruins them and if someone took all of the cucumbers then there is a spirit of 'well I guess they needed them'. Part of the reward is in the growing and outside space and time.

Also flowers. There are so many people living in tiny flats with no or very little outside space. Wouldn't adding a few flowers be nice? Maybe a pear tree or 2.

Its the good life isn't it? A very frequent dream is packing up and living off the land. Well why not communal land? What good is that piece of grass? Needs cutting, is littered all over and what? Pooed on?

I'm not some radical who will go round digging up peoples gardens or anything but I was thinking about a previous poster who said that they sorted out their communal garden in their flats and only after she made it nice did everyone else start using it. Well wouldn't the same happen everywhere?
People pay money to go to botanical gardens, so there is a market for this (if you know what I mean)

There could be communal run compost bins which would dramatically reduce waste and green house gasses. That compost would mean almost no costs because that's the main one isn't it?
Classes could be held at libraries and community centres about seed saving.
Everyone could save their pot noodle pots and yoghurt tubs for plant pots. Arts and crafts fairs could have children painting them, I just can't see a downside.

That is how I would fix the worlds problems anyway.

I read more of it... Wish I hadn't! What a crock of shit!

How about we accept that most women have periods, and then just get on with it. The more of a big deal is made, the more women are seen as "different" and "unreliable", which doesn't fit in with the feminist utopia, does it?

Samanabanana · 21/09/2021 16:32

Send all the dicks for mandatory don't be a dick lessons

Plough loads of resources into renewable energy and recycling initiatives

Tax the mega rich properly (individuals snd organisations)

Smash the patriarchy

@Lockdownbear

Ban car ownership. Massively improve public transport (and cycle paths) and have a rental system for cars if you need to go somewhere that doesn't have a public transport link.

Super idea, but we have spent the last 30 years building "out of town" everything which in turn is a PITA to access without a car.
Not everyone lived in the south-east with great public transport.

Public transport is not by any stretch great in the South East. Public transport only really works in places with high population density, which is why it works well in London, Manchester and Birmingham, but even in the edges of the Home Counties bordering London is is poor and anywhere rural in the South East it is pretty much non existent.
Gardenlass · 21/09/2021 16:50

Community gardens sound great, but there would be problems with vandalism. Or some people working hard to produce veg etc and others who just help themselves. I have an allotment and it is secured with railings all round and entry is by a combination padlock.
The world simply has too many people in it for everyone to live comfortable lives. I'm not at all sure how this can be overcome though.
Religion too is problematic, although religious wars are actually about money and power rather than the religion itself. Human nature unfortunately.

MatildaIThink · 21/09/2021 16:59

I would do a few things in the UK.
Increase taxes on everyone, aiming for a system similar to Norway.
Add a carbon tax to all flights to cover the cost of fully offsetting the flight.
Build a lot of nuclear power plants and renewables, get us off fossil fuels as quickly as possible.
Put an additional 25-50% tax on new ICE vehicles and use that to subsidise electric vehicles.
Build several UK chip fabs plus associated support businesses.
Train more nurses, doctors and teachers.
Employ 50k extra police and target antisocial behaviour and the other petty crime that blights many peoples lives.
Free, state funded childcare for working parents.
Introduce 3-6 months paid paternity leave so that fathers can be move involved with their children and help their partner after a child's birth.
Increase health, social care and education funding.
Start to spend more on research, 2% of GDP initially and rising to 5% in ten years, license the results as free to use for UK companies, but charge international licences of the patents.
Probably a bunch more things if I had the time to think about it properly.

Ultimately the planet only had humans on it for a short time in the planet's history so if we could just speed up humans dying off that might help most of all.

Indecisivelurcher · 21/09/2021 17:04

No cars, free veg, competent local government 😁

Indecisivelurcher · 21/09/2021 17:04

For the world!!!

Oo, and a 4 day week.

Dragonpox · 21/09/2021 17:05

I'd get women to run it all.

FindingMeno · 21/09/2021 17:08

Remove private wealth over a certain amount.
Cancel space programmes.
High taxes on excessive energy useage/ overconsumption.

Laiste · 21/09/2021 17:10

90% of these ideas are pie in the sky. I don't have the answers either i'm happy to admit.

I do know though that the moment you take away people's choice (''get rid'' of cars, ect) you immediately lose their support. You need people's support to change the world. Millions of resentful and grudging souls will jump back on any bandwagon offered..

MatildaIThink · 21/09/2021 17:12

@Dragonpox

I'd get women to run it all.
I think being run by all women would be just as bad as all men, the problem is having a narrowed perspective and an all female government would have blindspots just as an all male one does. You only have to look at a good relationship, it is better to work as a team, with a shared goal, rather than one trying to boss the other around.
mibbelucieachwell · 21/09/2021 17:12

I would abolish the idea of countries as sovereign states. There would just be one global government with the different departments spread round the globe. Eg environmental affairs in one country, justice in another etc.

3rd world debt would be abolished.

Revenue from taxes would be mostly divvied up according to population size with another chunk allocated to poorer countries ring fenced for health, infrastructure, education etc.

The global government would have to have a 50/50 split of men and women.
.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 21/09/2021 17:17

Skimmwd throught the thread.

Most of the lovely ideas would be vandalised or stolen asap.

That's why we can't have nice things. Because large part of population are shitheads. There is therefore only 1 logical step.
Shithead cull!

LukeEvansWife · 21/09/2021 17:19

And that’s number 3 - could you explain exactly what having a vagina does for making a better world?

Except you don’t know who the shitheads are so it would have to be a complete cull
Dragonpox · 21/09/2021 17:21

@MatildaIThink no I think there would need to be a transition period where women were the only leaders to redress the last few thousand years and put women on an equal footing. Making it 50:50 men and women straight of the bat means men would still have the sociohistorical power and carry that with them into all decsion making. And let's be honest, we can't fuck it up more than they did can we?

Laiste · 21/09/2021 17:22

I think the 'let women do it' responses are an understandable knee jerk reaction to the shit show the world is. A world largely run by ....

Inextremis · 21/09/2021 17:24

Develop a world-wide education curriculum, which is compulsory for every child until age 16, in every country. It should cover core fact-based subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, and geography. In addition to the worldwide core, each country/administration is free to add their own subjects to fill the school week, but any religious eduction is conducted outside of the main school system, and is optional.

In order to facilitate interaction and understanding, there should be a universal language in which education is conducted, taught in schools from the beginning. Not necessarily English - maybe another existing language, maybe a new one (this is all fantasy, of course!).

At age 16, every young person (with obvious adjustments made for those who would find this difficult due to their unique circumstances) should go on a state-funded exchange - for a year, to another area of the world far away from their own, to do community work. No exceptions, no buying yourself out of it, no excuses.

At 17, people could then go on to study further, or train for practical work, or whatever.

I think it'd be a good start!

YouJustDoYou · 21/09/2021 17:26

A vagina is not the sum of being female. All of our history, all of our combined experiences, our biological nature, our pure lack of arrogant, fury-filled ego testosterone...Oh, I could.go on. But well done for just reducing us to just our vaginas.

But the fact that they are men isn’t in itself making it a shitshow. There are plenty of women in positions of power and they don’t seem to be any better at it than the me

Don't want a bun fight, but could we please make sure certain countries are not helping with deciding the curriculum 🙈 there are some in the "developed world" which are not particularly known for good general knowledge....
