Do you take your dog to clients gardens?

If you work in peoples gardens/homes- roofer, gardener, fencer etc, do you take your dog? Do you ask the home owner beforehand or just let it loose in their garden when you arrive to start the job?

A gardener bought their tame fox once. Thought was a bit bizarre. Wouldn't be possible now as one of the cats hates dogs. The last dog she lived with still has the scars!

PILs used to have a gardener who mowed their lawn (badly) once a week. He brought his dog and let it run amok. It was very aggressive and jumped up on everyone and chased people just walking by minding their own business. If his van was parked outside when we arrived, we used to turn around and go and do a bit of shopping, then come back later.

I think that's very uncommon and I wouldn't want it at all. I'd absolutely end the services of someone who tried that on me.

Sloth66 · 21/09/2021 18:16

No way, unacceptable

CinstonWhurchill · 21/09/2021 18:33

I would not be happy with a workers dog anywhere near my house. I am allergic to dogs!!

nyktipolos · 21/09/2021 18:37

No, that's not ok.

I love dogs. But we have just rescued another very timid dog and she is still settling in. If another dog came in and ran round the garden, it would cause her a lot of stress and the older one wouldn't be that happy either.

Right now, I can't have a mother dog terrifying the little one.

I think that, if they ask first, and the home owner is OK with the dog being there, it’s fine. Obviously they would have to make sure the dog did no damage, and they’d pick up after it, if it did its business.

We had someone working in our garden, who brought their dog with them. They asked us if we were OK with the dog being there, and we were perfectly happy, but he made it absolutely clear that it was our decision, and he’d be fine if we said No.

Mantlemoose · 21/09/2021 18:40

Always ask.

LadyGardener2 · 21/09/2021 18:52

Im a gardener and sometimes take my dog with me. I always ask first (I can usually tell which clients would be ok) and will arrange my days so I do all the ones that allow her on the same days.

Spodge · 21/09/2021 18:54

I would expect them to ask first. I have had a builder come round who had his dog sleep in his van while he worked. He obviously didn't ask permission. When I saw he had the dog with him I said he was welcome to let the dog into the garden, but he didn't want to. We did have a gardener who brought their pup round and then spent the whole time playing with the dog or trying to keep it from trampling everything. They were a disaster and we were going to get rid of them anyway but if they had stayed then I would have put a stop to the dog.

I've moved around the UK a bit and very much agree with people saying it's a bit of an urban vs rural thing in terms of how common it is. In towns and cities in England and Scotland, I've never had a tradesperson bring a dog. However, I have in more rural places in both England and Scotland.

Personally, I'm fine with it as long as the dog is friendly towards people/kids, cats and other dogs. But I would definitely expect them to ask rather than just letting the dog run into the garden etc.

Skysblue · 21/09/2021 18:57

No, and I’d be livid and sack the guy at once.

I have cats. This is their home. Not a doggie daycare.

Mamainthemaking · 21/09/2021 20:54

Oh I’ve thought about it @toughdaay! But apparently window cleaners pay the council for a permit and only that window cleaner is allowed to work your area. So no chance of hiring someone else!

I also noticed he’d been using my water from my hose to wash the windows of other people’s houses prior to me hiring him! He is definitely a CF!

QueenBee52 · 21/09/2021 21:08

my gardener brings his Dog.. he has green paws from the grass cuttings.. the dog not the gardener 🤣

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/09/2021 21:24

I love to see my window cleaners dog but he doesn't come in the garden.

I'd be bloody annoyed if someone let their my garden or house. I wouldn't give permission, apart from the window cleaners dog which is gorgeous and extremely well behaved.

Lifeishitsometimes · 21/09/2021 21:30

With prior consent only. So many potential problems otherwise, from small children, other dog-avoidant pets or humans, reactive dogs, bitches in season, people who hate dogs, people for whom dogs are culturally taboo and considered unclean.... I personally would have no issue but many would and it shouldn't be seen as a given.

Chunkymenrock · 21/09/2021 21:38

Absolutely not on.

Envoitrevisage · 21/09/2021 22:11

@Ughmaybenot mine too.

My farrier has four dogs that go with him everywhere… I put my dogs away when he comes, because his pack and my pack would be handbags at dawn!

My vet brings a dog, my builder, my equine dentist, the boiler guy, the guy who does the septic tank, the milk man…..

Most people have dogs with them, and I can’t recall anyone letting their dog out without asking, but it wouldn’t bother me much. Unless they let it out into one of the areas my dogs are, because that’s asking for trouble.

Meatshake · 21/09/2021 22:40

When I was a dog walker my dog came everywhere with me.

When I was a gardener he'd sit in my van, or come in to some gardens where I knew the owners weren't in (eg. Empty house), business premises or where I had permission.

He was a great lazy dolt of a German shepherd though. He'd just lay down and do feck all 🤣

Laladell · 21/09/2021 23:01

My ex was a builder and he used to take his dog to certain jobs
