Do you take your dog to clients gardens?

If you work in peoples gardens/homes- roofer, gardener, fencer etc, do you take your dog? Do you ask the home owner beforehand or just let it loose in their garden when you arrive to start the job?

No.

Spikeyplants · 20/09/2021 20:48

No, this is not about me!

A relative had a tradesman let their dog loose in her garden without asking. My relative was mauled by a dog some years ago and still both physically and mentally recovering from the attack. She asked me if it was a common thing to just assume someones dog could come too.

I'm a dog lover BTW and would be fine with a visiting dog- but only if they checked first.

@SoloISland

When I lived in the Kerry mountains my internet was with a firm called digiweb. There were a lot of problems and the engineer came in from Limerick complete with his dog. So I would put my two dogs in another room. The thing that riled was finding dog poop after he had gone; but of course that was why he let the dog out... I thought it was an Irish thing but clearly not.
I wouldn't shut my dogs away to accomodate a workman's dog

We used to have a gardener who brought his lovely spaniel. She was happy to sleep in his van but I was always keen for him to bring her into the garden. I’m not sure if he would have asked if I hadn’t offered though.

We have a cat now, so no dogs allowed!

Mamainthemaking · 20/09/2021 21:23

My window cleaner does this. Even knocks to ask I bring my own dog in!

Garriet · 20/09/2021 21:24

My god, no, I’d go spare.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 20/09/2021 21:25

Our gardener brings his dog. He did ask though. Well, sort of told us in a polite way - don't think there were any options than accept the dog or find another gardener! Grin

icedcoffees · 20/09/2021 21:30

It's very very common here, but we're rural. I'd say about 75% of tradesman have their dogs in their vans with them!

I take mine to work and he comes to clients homes but I'm a dog walker so it's to be expected Smile

JojoLapin · 20/09/2021 21:56

Never had anyone bringing their dog but I’d be very happy about it (well behaved dog and would expect to be asked).

womaninatightspot · 20/09/2021 22:03

Really common here (rural) fencer and guy who fitted the woodstove brought dogs. It doesn't bother me though they weren't in the proper garden just the yard.

echt · 20/09/2021 22:12

It's quite common for outdoor tradies in Australia to bring their dogs, but they stay in the ute, where they belong.

Poppitt58 · 20/09/2021 22:21

Very common in our rural area. Dogs are a pretty normal part of life. Clearly aggressive dogs and their mess are not welcome, but well trained, friendly dogs often accompany tradesmen in my experience.

What a CF! I'd have a new window cleaner the first time that happened.
SylvanasWindrunner · 20/09/2021 22:36

The garage near us has a huge rottweiler that sits outside and escorts you in. He's the soppiest, loveliest dog ever and I secretly love it when our car breaks Grin until I have to pay the bill. Not the same at all, but this thread just made me think of it!

I wouldn't care if a gardener brought their dog or anyone else really as long as it was under control and not in the house (we have a cat and our own dog or I wouldn't care about it coming in either!).

hollyivysaurus · 20/09/2021 22:38

Our roofer brought his puppy the other day! One of the neighbours cats was around and it was barking at it a lot, so he took it home. I was disappointed, it was a really cute puppy!!

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/09/2021 16:27

Normal round here, they ask if its ok if the dog gets out and if it's not the dog stays in the truck or possibly tied up under/behind depending on where the vehicle is parked.

nokidshere · 21/09/2021 16:31

I allowed a builder to bring his very old, placid lab when he did a weeks job for me. But only outside and only because he just found a spot and slept. (The dog not the builder)

But generally I wouldn't because I don't like dogs.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 21/09/2021 16:42

Ugh, fencer brought a massive dog once without asking. I told him not ok as we have a cat. He was insulted and said it would not go for my cat. Errrrr.... I should hope not but the poor cat was still terrified!

AvantGardening · 21/09/2021 16:48

Totally normal here. Usually collies or labs.

As we have a lab if they vanish into the village they’re often returned to me.

Blossomtoes · 21/09/2021 16:48

It doesn’t matter what job you do, you don’t take your animal with you.

Lots of people do and it’s fine. Nearly every army office has a dog in it. It’s been a thing for decades.

WimpoleHat · 21/09/2021 16:48

I’ve had this a couple of times and have said no way!

alloalloallo · 21/09/2021 17:03

It’s normal round here for tradesmen to bring their dogs with them - I’ve always been asked first though. If it’s not ok, they leave their dog in the van.

It’s never bothered me. I have my own dog and as long as they all play nicely, I’m not fussed.

Tbh, it’s really hard to get good, reliable tradesmen round here. Good reliable builders and gardeners, window cleaners, etc, can pick and choose their work. If you kicked up a fuss, I suspect they’d tell you that you were free to go elsewhere.

DH takes our dog to work - I think most of his customers come in specifically to see her and are disappointed if she’s out on deliveries or at home with me or something. They all come bearing dog biscuits. No one has ever complained, but they’re all free to take their business elsewhere if they don’t like it.

Xenia · 21/09/2021 17:06

It is not permitted by law so unless the person agrees then the dog cannot come in. (I hate dogs)
