Do you take your dog to clients gardens?

If you work in peoples gardens/homes- roofer, gardener, fencer etc, do you take your dog? Do you ask the home owner beforehand or just let it loose in their garden when you arrive to start the job?

I have got an old dog (no kids) and would say no if asked. If I hadn't got a dog myself I might say yes depending on the dog. If a workman just let the dog out without asking I would be most unhappy.

godmum56 · 20/09/2021 20:04

PS I live rurally

spicedappledonuts · 20/09/2021 20:06

In rural areas I think it is pretty normal.
Less so in urban ones.

BordelDeMerde · 20/09/2021 20:06

I would be a bit worried, tbh, as one of my dogs is a right bitch and sometimes has a go at other people's dogs if they come into 'her' territory.

DaftVader42 · 20/09/2021 20:07

Old gardener wanted to, and I said no because it was a jack Russell that wanted to chase my cat. We let her go after she was busted bringing the dog into the garden off lead despite being asked not to. Tree man brings his dog. Working lab. Leaves it in the van and we have to insist he lets it out. Dog lies on tree man’s coat snd doesn’t move without tree man permission. So obedient. And makes love eyes at my cat, who’ll happily sit close to him knowing he won’t move. Dog desperate to be friends , cat slowly warming !

We recently did a lot of work on the house and the grounds person had a dog who he brings to all of his jobs. He did have the van set up for the dog for jobs where she had to stay inside, but at ours he let her out.

The scaffolding people also had a dog which they tied to the fence with some water while they worked.

We live in the countryside so maybe more common here.

Newfluff · 20/09/2021 20:09

Agree, rural normal, they bring in the van and then ask if they can be let out, which for me depends on if they get on with dogs and free range birds. Although window cleaners dog won't get out after having a run in with our cockrel.

So not rude to bring it and keep in van (or tied to van) rude to let it out without asking.

BlusteryLake · 20/09/2021 20:10

Well if they brought a dog to my garden it would probably escape straight out through the hole in the fence!

SirenSays · 20/09/2021 20:11

My DHs boss takes his two massive dogs on jobs every day, has done every day since they were pups. They mostly sleep in the van or go for a walk with one of the lads whenever they need to.

StressyWoman · 20/09/2021 20:11

No but I’d quite like it if they did. My ex was a plasterer and took my dog to work a few times after asking, he said she just laid sleeping like she always does.

Monestera · 20/09/2021 20:12

I’m really pleased that you spelt ‘loose’ correctly.

amillionrosepetals · 20/09/2021 20:14

I have used loads of tradesmen over the years and this is something I've never heard of. I would say no if asked. If a tradesman brought a dog without asking they would be told to leave.

SunLovingMum · 20/09/2021 20:15

No, I wouldn’t like it and I’m a dog lover/owner. I’d also be wondering about tut trademan’s insurance because I know they’d certainly it be insured for their pet in my home on their lability cover so I’d be questioning their practices over all.

There could be so many potential issues bringing their dog - interaction with home owner’s pets, any damage their pet could do snd the tradesman would certainly not be concentrating on their job at hand and adequately watching their dog in an unfamiliar location.

SoloISland · 20/09/2021 20:17

When I lived in the Kerry mountains my internet was with a firm called digiweb. There were a lot of problems and the engineer came in from Limerick complete with his dog. So I would put my two dogs in another room.
The thing that riled was finding dog poop after he had gone; but of course that was why he let the dog out...
I thought it was an Irish thing but clearly not.

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 20/09/2021 20:17

I’m assuming you are the home owner & someone brought their dog round to your house?

No, I wouldn’t be happy with that.

Drbrowns · 20/09/2021 20:18

I wouldn’t mind it as long as it was well behaved and wasn’t a dangerous breed.

Hellocatshome · 20/09/2021 20:20

My uncle was a builder and had a Jack Russell that was like his shadow. He only accepted job that would allow his dog to come with him. But he obviously checked in advance and the dog used to basically spend the day asleep in various sunny spots while Uncle worked. The day that dog died was the day my Uncle retired.

HikingforScenery · 20/09/2021 20:20

Gosh. I hadn’t even thought this could be a possibility. If a tradesperson asked to bring their dog, I’d to say no.

SoloISland · 20/09/2021 20:22

Love this
DroopyClematis · 20/09/2021 20:24

If you work outdoors in clients' homes then just ask, before accepting the job, if the client would mind if a dog came along.
I suspect quite a few people wouldn't mind at all, as long as any point was cleared up.

honeybeesknees · 20/09/2021 20:24

We have only had one tradesperson bring their dog, and it stayed in the van the whole time. Or so I thought…. After they had finished their work I found dog poo in the garden! I was not happy about that, and wouldn’t use them again.

PermanentTemporary · 20/09/2021 20:27

No. My garden, my cats. Another great reason not to move to the country.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/09/2021 20:27

I’d be annoyed if you didn’t ask me in advance.

We have cats and the back garden would be a no , it’s their territory.

I like dogs too though, so if you gave me advance notice I would ready the front garden (your dog could escape through our front gate but I could deal with that with notice)

RavingAnnie · 20/09/2021 20:28

I would not like that at all.

HopeForTheBestExpectTheWorst · 20/09/2021 20:33

We live in the country and it’s not at all unusual for builders and tradespeople to bring their dog with them. But I’m not in the U.K. and actually dogs are welcome in loads of places here, including cafes and restaurants, and nobody bats an eyelid.
