To ask why so many M25 drivers seem to have a deathwish?

Drove DS back to Uni today, so drive half way around the M25 twice, OMG, some of the driving was bonkers - undertaking, cutting across lanes at 90+mph - so dangerous.

What makes people believe they are invincible? There were a number of long delays due to accidents and yet, some of the driving was dreadful.

We drove on 2 other motorways but it was only on the M25 that it was frightening.

@RandomMess

Last time I used the toll road they only had 2 booths in operation so queued ages to pay which negates any time saved using the wretched thing Angry

When southbound I also hat the way the traffic filters onto the M42 - it may have improved since then as I gave up using it!

Last time I used the M6 toll was in July and every one of the toll booths were open and each one was about 7 or 8 cars deep - I’ve never seen it like that before. The journey that normally takes about 4 hours took 7.5 - nightmare.

@GorgonzolaSouffle

My friend was airlifted to hospital last week after being crushed on the M25…..she’s in an induced coma.☹️☹️☹️☹️

Absolutely shocking driving but I think it was down to sudden braking after the stupid protesters on the motorway last week. 😡😡😡😡

Nothing wrong with the protesting idiots that a couple of water cannon couldn't cure. Where did you leave them Boris?

M25 Driving is the worst!

I honestly wonder if some drivers have actually passed their test (in UK) and/or have ever read the Highway Code. So many drivers siting in the 3rd lane of 4 at 70, with 1st and 2nd lanes empty does my head in. Two drivers doing under 60 in the 2nd lane (1st empty) of 4. What?!

The four lane section of the A1M is exactly the same.
ILiveInSalemsLot · 18/09/2021 22:03

I don’t mind the m25. I hate country lanes in the dark when I feel harassed by local drivers who want you to move quickly.

bizboz · 18/09/2021 22:05

The lorries are the worst - they drive up so close behind you even though you can't go any faster because of traffic in front. There's no stopping distance - I only have a small car and would stand no chance if a lorry ploughed into the back of me. I live near the M25 and have been happily driving on it for 20 years but I've started to become quite anxious about it, especially if I have my children with me.

Lozza70 · 18/09/2021 22:07

Try the North Circular every weekend! The undertaking at speed and lane is horrific.

HummingBeeBox · 18/09/2021 22:09

I feel like so many people don't know to keep left that people who do know the rules get pissed off and either undertake or do the 90mph loop round them to make a point. I wish oh wish middle (two) Lane hoggers would realise they cause massive massive issues by not driving in a dynamic fashion.

Davros · 18/09/2021 22:13

Where on the M25 can anyone do 90mph? I wish I could drive like a loon on it

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/09/2021 22:20

Possiby they don't want to leave a gap because another car will move in and if they're decelerating the lorry would need to adjust/brake .
And they are slower to do so .

Middle lane hoggers are just arses .
But there's the ones who dip in and out of the left lane as well

JADS · 18/09/2021 22:22

Maybe it's my bit of the M25, but I have never seen anyone do 90mph. If you get above 50, it's a good day, normally it's like a giant car park.

Over lockdown it was so much quieter. I actually felt quite happy when it returned to car park mode as it felt like normality was returning.

EwwSprouts · 18/09/2021 22:23

M25 worst driving. Seriously scary.
Birmingham bad with many complex poorly signed junctions. Not sure if they're bad drivers or confused and panicked. Special mention for where the M42/M6 toll splits, poor signage results in many cutting across lanes last minute.
Bradford is 7 circles of hell. You'll get in and out but mildly traumatised and never on the same 2 roads.

tiddlysquat · 18/09/2021 22:23

I never drive in the far left on m25 as you're forever swapping to avoid being shunted off and there are too many lorries.
I'm the one pootling along in the one next to it - it's my m25 strategy after many years on it!

Dreamstate · 18/09/2021 22:26

North circular is way way worse than M25! There are boy racers racing each other, they undertake you at alarming speed and cut in real close or tailgate at dangerous speeds.

And how does anyone do 90mph on the m25 without a camera going off! Hmm

RandomMess · 18/09/2021 22:27

That's 2 mentions for Bradford, never going there now!!!!

Can I comment on how quiet the northern section of the M40 is post Covid - I keep driving on it wondering where the traffic is...

Fluffmonkey82 · 18/09/2021 22:28

@Bagelsandbrie

I nearly shit my pants every time I have to drive on a dual carriageway or motorway now. Everyone drives so selfishly and aggressively. It’s become much worse since Covid. No one gives a fuck about anyone else anymore.
You are definitely right about that one, it's everyone for themselves nowadays and that's not just driving.

You’re pretty brave to admit that. For the love of God, just drive in the appropriate lane. You’re the one we’re all swearing at.
FatAnkles · 18/09/2021 22:36

The way Londoners drive is why I never bithered to get my driving licence. I'm a Londoner.

It's dog eat dog as soon as you leave your house.

I like buses.

Yes completely agree m25 and A2 are the absolute worst for middle Lane hoggers. Lanes on the left just sitting completely empty!
MatildaIThink · 18/09/2021 22:38

The standard of driving everywhere has been awful since the first lockdown ended, it it seemed many people both forgot thr rules of the road and became total arseholes.

MissCruellaDeVil · 18/09/2021 22:58

I agree driving has become worse since the covid lockdowns, I think people have forgotten how to drive!

Grenlei · 18/09/2021 22:58

I was on the M25 yesterday. Didn't see anyone going over 75-80 due to the proliferation of speed cameras.

What I did see were lots of utter morons sitting in lane 2 and 3 on the ,4 lane stretches, doing 60-65. It's those drivers who are the real danger imho.

If you cannot drive at 70 (excluding certain commercial speed limited vehicles, cars towing caravans etc) you should not be on a motorway. Stick to 60 mph A roads. Or if you must use a motorway for the love of God stick to the inside lane.

The roads were busy yesterday, it took me nearly 5 hours to do a journey that is normally 3 hours 20. No accidents just a lot of slow drivers causing the outside lane to be full of every other driver who wanted to drive, not unreasonably, at 70mph. Even on the M40 which is normally clear I barely got above 80 because of the sub 70mph drivers in lanes 1 and 2, and a lot of 70-75 mph drivers in lane 3 who wouldn't move over.

DriveInSaturday · 18/09/2021 23:02

No mention for the (Manchester ring motorway) M60 yet? It's got the same number of junctions as the M25, in less than half the length. You do the decent thing and move over to the left hand lane, and immediately there's a sign telling you the left lane is filtering off at the next junction, so you have to move back over and nobody will let you in.

The junctions come thick and fast. But if you miss the one you need, it seems a long way to the next exit. When you do finally manage to leave the motorway, a large proportion of the junctions are one way only, so you can't turn round and go back in the opposite direction, and even if you can, there's no exit at the junction you want from that direction.

AdoptedBumpkin · 18/09/2021 23:05

It is one of the things I don't miss about living near London.
