To ask why so many M25 drivers seem to have a deathwish?

Drove DS back to Uni today, so drive half way around the M25 twice, OMG, some of the driving was bonkers - undertaking, cutting across lanes at 90+mph - so dangerous.

What makes people believe they are invincible? There were a number of long delays due to accidents and yet, some of the driving was dreadful.

We drove on 2 other motorways but it was only on the M25 that it was frightening.

I wish I hadn’t clicked on this thread. We’re due to drive on some of the roads mentioned here next week with our two young DC.

whoami24601 · 18/09/2021 21:23

Oh god Bradford driving is awful! M6/ M5 is a piece of piss in comparison!

Youdoyoutoday · 18/09/2021 21:23

I prefer the M25 to the North circular, its a trip I have to make on a regular basis unfortunately. However I agree with you and for every dick move I see, I report it to the police with video evidence from the dash cam and have got many a conviction Grin

nonono1 · 18/09/2021 21:24

Northbound Blackwell tunnel approach + barking roundabout. 2 points of London where roadrules mean nothing. It's the jungle and only the strong survive

I’ve done the Blackwall tunnel several times recently - I can’t say I’ve ever had an issue with it, other than there being a lot of traffic, obviously.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/09/2021 21:25

Encountered some crazy driving on the m4 recently coming back from West Wales. And on the m11 in Suffolk. Made the m25 seem tame!

PerditaNitt · 18/09/2021 21:26

@holidayblues77 the m25 is relatively civilised if you travel very early in the morning.

The m1 is consistently awful - the drivers aren’t the best but the real problem is the ongoing roadworks and never ending changes of speed limits. Hate it with a passion

SevenOldLadies · 18/09/2021 21:26

One of the problems with the M25 is that the left hand lane constantly turns into an exit lane, so no one uses that one as then you can’t get over. Add in the lorry drivers in the second lane and you’re down to two lanes.

I don’t find the drivers noticeably worse than anywhere else, though.

holidayblues77 · 18/09/2021 21:27

@PerditaNitt thanks!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/09/2021 21:30

Oh god Bradford driving is awful!

I haven't driven in Bradford but I'll give you the M62
Hardshoulder lanes come/go
Lanes filtering from the left
There's one bit where I have to get off the M62 , across two lanes it's under a flyover . Joining very fast traffic to the left ....and there was a blizzard !

I drive on the M25 fairly often. Maybe it's more familiar to me (but they do drive like wankers I agree)

RandomMess · 18/09/2021 21:32

I'm making a mental note to never go to Bradford!!

Bizarrely the M6 stretch from Manchester exits northwards seem to have become insane this year. Loads of serious accidents.

Almost like lockdown has changed people into worse drivers than ever?? Perhaps they haven't adjusted bro back to busy and you can no longer drive like a dick at 90mph and not cause crashes????

holidayblues77 · 18/09/2021 21:34

I can’t understand why people intentionally drive so dangerously and put other drivers’ lives at risk. I’m feeling so anxious about travelling with our DC.

whoami24601 · 18/09/2021 21:34

@Randommess do come to Bradford- it's awesome! Avoid the Leeds side for driving (BD3 and 4) and you'll be grand.

firsttimedad79 · 18/09/2021 21:34

Lorry driver here.

Standard of driving in this country is horrendous now.

M25, north circular, m5 and south circular are all the worse!

Thankfully on the new contract at work I do 95% farms so don't deal with it often anymore. Saying that I've got to drive to Dagenham on Monday morning which will be fun lol

RandomMess · 18/09/2021 21:35

@70isaLimitNotaTarget is the the Manchester but that takes you into the Oxford Rd station area?

I live north of Manchester and the trip from the M6 into the Deansgate area is just horrific.

Here switch over 5 lanes to the right in less than half a mile when no one lets you in but it's all about to split off. Then the motorway abruptly comes to an end with traffic lights and no decent prior warning 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

At least the travel home is far far easier.

GorgonzolaSouffle · 18/09/2021 21:37

My friend was airlifted to hospital last week after being crushed on the M25…..she’s in an induced coma.☹️☹️☹️☹️

Absolutely shocking driving but I think it was down to sudden braking after the stupid protesters on the motorway last week. 😡😡😡😡

WhatIDidntWin · 18/09/2021 21:38

DS has spent the last 4 years at uni so I’ve done quite a lot of driving from the NW down to the outskirts of London.
I found the M25 mostly okay because traffic on the bit I used (around Heathrow) always seemed to be at a standstill/go-slow.
I hate the M42 through Birmingham and I love the M6 toll - worth every penny.
I spent 20 years driving up and down the M6 for work - I think there are idiots whichever part of the country you’re in - I’ve witnessed so much awful driving. My DF, who was a taxi driver, used to say that 50% of the people in this country are ‘normal’ and 50% are nutters, I can’t say that I disagree with him.

lking679 · 18/09/2021 21:42

I find people are not moving left when they’re not overtaking. It frustrates those who do want to overtake and the lane is full of people not moving! They resort to some undertaking just to get round.
There are times I’ve had to move two lanes to the right to overtake someone I’d otherwise undertake. Sometimes I do just level up with them in the lane so basically driving side by side and that reminds them they’re many to be overtaking!
Other thing I’d keep in mind is we rarely use our car park commute is train/tube so car just for occasional round town. Maybe not everyone on the m25 has to drive that often!

lllllllllll · 18/09/2021 21:44

Standard of driving in this country is horrendous now.

@firsttimedad79 I can’t say I disagree, but what has changed? Driving tests are surely more rigorous than ever! There are presumably millions more people on the roads than there were 20-30 years ago - could that be it?

lllllllllll · 18/09/2021 21:44

Perhaps the answer is to build more roads (whilst long term improving public transport massively).

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/09/2021 21:46

Random I'd have to check , but I know there were two junctions very close together and I had to scoot across quite smartly , then under the flyover was my turnoff .
All I can remember was "Phew I didn't miss the junctiion " and " Look at that snow, its horozontal ! "

M6 Toll is lovely , nearly empty but ££

RandomMess · 18/09/2021 21:48

Last time I used the toll road they only had 2 booths in operation so queued ages to pay which negates any time saved using the wretched thing Angry

When southbound I also hat the way the traffic filters onto the M42 - it may have improved since then as I gave up using it!

RandomMess · 18/09/2021 21:51

Something I've observed is that people don't like letting you out in order to overtake which discourages you to pull back in left like you should.

Then there are the middle lane hoggers that seem incapable of using the far overtaking lane to overtake and instead drive up peoples arses try and make them pull over even if they are overtaking and the traffic is too heavy to pull in 🤷🏽‍♀️

Large problem is that much of the time the motorways are far busier than they were built for.

colouringindoors · 18/09/2021 21:52

yes.

CosmicComfort · 18/09/2021 21:57

I hate the M25 because of the traffic, driving seems awful everywhere these day.

One of the reasons I want to move is to get above the M25, it’s just a car park most of the time and living on the south coast, too many journeys involve a trek around it.

Ds1 is off to Oxford University soon so the next 4 years will be us trekking round my least favorite stretch of the M25 (Heathrow side) regularly😩

JudgeJ · 18/09/2021 21:57

@Simonjt

90mph?! Usually you barely get out of third gear on the M25!
I was a bit afraid to say that I am envious of anyone who can get to 90 on the M25! It's always seemed like a fast moving traffic jam though the worst place I ever drove was the M62, bucketing rain, Friday evening so pitch black and I suddenly realised that we were all doing about 75mph.
