Gas and electricity bills to soar

This is worrying as it will push many into fuel poverty.
Rising food prices and empty shelves.
Is anyone worried?

It's quite scary. Compare the market aren't even doing comparisons right now. uSwitch have offered me 5 tariffs that all add £100 per month onto my bill that has already doubled.

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 18:16

None of this was on money saving expert ten days ago when I thought I was doing my research properly.Confused

CornishTiger · 19/09/2021 18:23

@tiddlysquat if you’ve started switching and there is a better deal you should still be within the cooling off period.

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 18:38

@CornishTiger yep that's what I'm counting on!

Try MSE energy club for comparisons, u switch seem to be missing loads.
CovidCorvid · 19/09/2021 18:47

£100 added sounds decent. Uswitch are adding a minimum of £500 a year for me!

RagzReturnsRebooted · 19/09/2021 18:53

Sainsburys/Eon Next seem to be cheapest I can find for a 1 or 2 year fixed tarrif that is working out cheaper than the price cap amount (fixed tarrifs are allowed to be more expensive than the cap).
I was migrated over to British Gas and the tarrif they are offering is about £10 a month more expensive on my usage, so I'm switching.
Going from £80 a month with my old supplier on my last tarrif to £131 a month now. That's so painful...

OrangeBananaFish · 19/09/2021 18:57

I've just had a quick look. My fixed tariff runs out in November. I'm on electricity only (we have an oil tank for heating) which is been quoted at an extra £50 a month.

Since going back to the office 5 days a week (not allowed to WFH) and petrol has gone up, food has gone up, UC and wages will be decreasing. I just about break even now. Really don't know how I'm going to get through all this TBH. Luckily the oil tank has just been filled so we will be warm, just will be sat bored in the dark with no electricity.

TheWeeDonkeys · 19/09/2021 19:01

I got moved to Edf when green network energy went under at the start of the year, im paying £62 a month but using £55 a months worth.
Got my first bill from Edf and they wanted to out my DD up to £189, rang up and said no chance I'll pay £70 & we agreed. Back in the office now so electric usage will be less.
Just updated my meter readings on the app and get a new bill through... £2.5k a month they said my new DD will be!

Just switched the eon next fixed for 1 year for £78 a month.

Whatdoihavetodo · 19/09/2021 19:07

@howlongto

Does anyone know if sainsburys is classed as one of the small companies? It's by eon allegedly...
That's what I was wondering too. I've just switched to them but if there part off Eon next they must be covered by eon if anything goes wrong?
RagzReturnsRebooted · 19/09/2021 19:09

Yes I assumed Sainsbury will be fine as it's really Eon. Same tarrif, you just get Nectar points.

@lougle. Jesus, I thought you meant £100 a year. That’s insane!

I suspect street lighting will be affected as suggested by an MP this week. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-58585374.amp

DeadButDelicious · 19/09/2021 20:29

Yup. My gas and electricity payments have gone up by £66 effective next month. Unfortunately we have an outstanding balance and have had a couple of really big bills recently so we are just going to have to lump it and focus on getting those balances cleared over the next few months rather than in one fell swoop and then start looking for a 'cheaper' supplier. It's going to be tight but not impossible. Really fucking annoying.

Note that fixed tariffs available now are MUCH higher than variable tariffs AND are also much higher than Ofgem's Price Cap as the Cap does not apply to them.

The "standard" domestic dual fuel customer proscribed by Ofgem uses 2,900 kWh electricity and 12,000 kWh gas per year, and the Price Cap from 1st October for this usage is £1,277 for a default variable tariff paid by direct debit.

Energy companies must charge less than £1,277 for the default variable tariff (and this cap should last until 31/03/22), but they can charge much more for fixed tariffs. For example Octopus, who are historically one of the cheaper major suppliers have their variable tariff set at £1,201, but their current fixed tariff offer is set at £1,542.

My cheap fixed tariff expires at the end of September, and my options are a 33% rise to move to a variable tariff, or a 66% rise for a new fixed deal.

userxx · 19/09/2021 22:53

So many people are going to be cold this winter. It's horrible.

ShinyThingsDistractMe · 19/09/2021 23:08

I'm in planning mode to try and reduce the need for so much central heating this winter to limit cost.

So far heavy curtains on external back door and front door. Lock the door in the evening and pull the curtain over. I was genuinely amazed how much it stopped the draught in this social housing house!!

I've ordered some of those draught excluder cushions for the bedrooms and living room doors.

And we've gone old school with a hot water bottle to go in each bed before bedtime so I can knock the heating off over night unless it's really really cold night.

Hoping to get away with only having the heating on first thing in the morning for an hour and then 5-8 at night.

Electricity wise, swapped all bulbs to energy saving ones (expensive but worth it) Turning everything off at the switch when not in use not just leave things on standby. Excluding WiFi router, fridge freezer and fish tank.

It's penny pinching but having seen my new daily rates and unit price, it's all I can do to offset the rise.

Neveranynamesleft · 19/09/2021 23:08

Bulb are now under the spotlight apparently....

I guess the gamble is what happens in six months time then when that cap is up. Is it worth paying more on a fixed rate for the next six months than a variable if it means for the next 18 months you pay less?

Here is a response about the energy costs from a friend who is a National grid scientist..I have pasted relevant paragraph only:

Has the dramatic rise in in gas and electricity prices, which I predicted, and more to come, influenced your solar decision. Very interestingly, over the last few weeks, there has been little wind, so wind generation on the grid has been low; forcing the grid to run some very inefficient gas plant; note that 50% of our generation comes from imported gas these days anyway. Gas prices have rocketed across Europe with Russia being a major supplier, not inclined to increase production to lower the cost ....they have been blowing up coal stations left right nad centre without noting that nuclear new build is either cancelled or years behind schedule; so the shit has hit the fan as it were. To crown that they have had a fire a Selindge where the French -UK interconnector comes ashore. It more that often runs 24/7 importing 2000MW, now down to 1000MW until next March. Roll on a cold winter...stock up on oil lamps and candles

FuckmyHead · 20/09/2021 00:13

@Neveranynamesleft I’m with bulb do you have any more info?
Been following/reading this thread and other stuff in the media and it’s scary really😔

LeafOfTruth · 20/09/2021 00:21

Green. Have warned that they won't last the winter in The Guardian today.

Really quite shocking and worrying!
