Gas and electricity bills to soar

This is worrying as it will push many into fuel poverty.
Rising food prices and empty shelves.
Is anyone worried?

Neighbours have had solar panels for years they're used to a cheque coming in. Without warning the company has gone. They're in the dark about it

The price of second hand petrol cars is now higher something to do with semi conductor chips.

CovidCorvid · 19/09/2021 12:49

I’ve just fixed a couple of weeks ago…..was that bad? I assumed it’s going to get worse not better?

RagzReturnsRebooted · 19/09/2021 12:52

I was with People's Energy (just gone bust) until 2 months ago, then switched to PFP energy who have also just gone bust. Being migrated to British Gas. They emailed me and said they have made a special tariff for us and it is cheaper than any on comparison sites. Well, I compared the unit rates and standing charges and it will be £50-60pm more than I'm currently paying! Switching to a fixed tariff with Eon will save a little and lock in a fix, which looks like a good idea given the price cap is likely to rise again in April but around £250pa (according to MSE). No exit fees, so I'm going to fix (2yr fix is £4 pm more than a 1yr fix so tempted with that) now.

We'll be going from paying around £80 a month to £130 a month. So I'll be cancelling my gym/pool membership to pay for that.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 19/09/2021 12:53

I used Bulb's current unit rates for comparison as they are set at the price cap now apparently (they used to be really cheap) and fix worked out better.

CovidCorvid · 19/09/2021 13:03

I guess at least with a fix I know where I am. Maybe prices will go down but equally they could just go up and up. 🤷‍♀️

Notdoingthis · 19/09/2021 13:11

I don't understand the heated throw idea. I rarely sit still in one spot for long. Surely you need more than one spot in your house warm?

Sirzy · 19/09/2021 13:12

Most fixed rates will have the option to end the contract early for a cost (around £30) so if prices drop dramatically - I can’t see it happening soon - you could always look into options to change and pay

chocolateorangeinhaler · 19/09/2021 13:15

There was a fire a few weeks ago where the under sea high voltage cable that comes from France terminates.

Will take months to repair apparently, that was given as one reason prices will soar as we can't import power anymore from Europe.

TiddleTaddleTat · 19/09/2021 13:18

@Notdoingthis I think the idea with heated throw is if you're sometimes alone in the house and stationary - watching tv,working at a laptop , etc , you don't need to put the heating on. Having had a quick look online it seems v cheap to run

chocolateorangeinhaler · 19/09/2021 13:18

@justasking111

My mate has just been offered more money than she paid for a three year old skoda 4x4 that she bought new.

It is apparently because they can't get things like chips to build new ones.

NotMyCat · 19/09/2021 14:27

I'm with bulb and dreading when my gas starts going up again with heating. I try and keep it off as long as possible
WFH I can't move around so I use a heated throw as im often sat for 3hrs and get really cold

Gas and electricity bills to soar
StarCat2020 · 19/09/2021 14:47

It’s not Brexit. Gas prices have soared everywhere
Yes but in France they produce most electricity through nuclear and electricity is used to heat many homes.

In the UK we use gas to produce about 50% of our electricity and to heat a lot of the homes.

NotMyCat · 19/09/2021 14:55

@chocolateorangeinhaler yep. I work for a main dealer and new cars are all on back order

StarCat2020 · 19/09/2021 14:58

Our elec is renewable and from what I can tell it's the price of gas that is driving the biggest rises
If your electricty is coming through the National Grid (nearly all homes) then it can come from any source.

I don't know how they get away with telling people that they supplym 100% renewable energy.

If you think about it, it makes sense as in the middle of the night there is no sunshine and on a still winter's night also no wind.

Claudethecat · 19/09/2021 16:21

Just saw this, which suggests many of the smaller companies could go bust. www.theguardian.com/business/2021/sep/19/majority-of-uk-small-energy-suppliers-could-be-left-to-collapse-this-winter

CovidCorvid · 19/09/2021 17:57

I’ve just looked at uswitch again and the prices have rocketed from when I fixed a new deal about 2 weeks ago! If I’d left it till now think it would have cost me about An extra £400 a year!

CovidCorvid · 19/09/2021 17:58

But I’m a bit worried as it’s some small firm I’ve fixed with and now I’m worried they might go bust. 🙈

Toastytoads · 19/09/2021 18:06

The fire on the major UK pipeline has been kept way from the press.

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 18:09

I'm going to get myself a heated throw for Xmas for working at home! DD has an oodie and I can use the woodburner to keep the dog's preferred room warm!

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 18:12

I'm hoping I can cancel my switch to one of the cos expected to go bust this week- but then I'm still with a small supplier. Kicking myself as there was a good deal with edf but I was avoiding the big suppliers when I was looking !

userxx · 19/09/2021 18:13

@tiddlysquat which ones are expected to go bust ?

howlongto · 19/09/2021 18:14

Does anyone know if sainsburys is classed as one of the small companies? It's by eon allegedly...

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 18:15

If you look on Twitter it's on there . My switch is to avro, OFGEM are investigating them...
