Gas and electricity bills to soar

This is worrying as it will push many into fuel poverty.
Rising food prices and empty shelves.
Is anyone worried?

@RagzReturnsRebooted

Well, price risen anyway. Apparently the standing charge rates doubled!
I'm quite glad I grabbed it when I did Grin
RagzReturnsRebooted · 21/09/2021 11:48

Yeah me too, though I only did 1 year fix. Hoping it goes through, I did it at the weekend. Working out about £13 cheaper per month than the British Gas tariff I was switched to. I'm just going to be stuck in annoying admin with 3 different providers until it's all sorted as I was with PFP and only just got my British Gas contract today!
They confirmed my supply before I switched pa fingers crossed.

Neveranynamesleft · 21/09/2021 11:51

I would be worried that if the Sainsburys set up did go bust and Eon took control then Eon may say they will move you to xyz tariff and o sorry its xyz more expensive. Just like anything else at the moment, it's all ifs buts and maybes unfortunately.

SciFiScream · 21/09/2021 12:12

Gosh. We switched to eon yesterday. Got a 1 year fix for £125. Had been paying £95 (with a small debt of £35). Bulb had wanted us to go to £156 pcm.

Feel quite lucky now.

justasking111 · 21/09/2021 12:36

I've just bought candles unscented in case of power interruptions. Forgot matches 🙈

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2021 12:48

They have extended the estimate for when they can get half of IFA interconnector back online.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2021 12:49

oops, pressed post too soon.

was supposed to be later this month. Now 23rd Oct.

StatesOfMatter · 21/09/2021 13:04

Quite glad I moved to E.on over the weekend! The increase in tarrif from v7 to v8 equates to £30 more a month for me.

Billandben444 · 21/09/2021 13:09

Just ordered 2 wind-up torches off Amazon

TokyoSushi · 21/09/2021 13:23

I managed to switch yesterday, all the news prompted me to have a look when our fixed deal was up - 7th October! We were with E.ON Next and I spent about 2 hours searching for something cheaper. The only cheaper deal I could find was with Bulb but I was cautious as they're on the 'amber' list, ended up staying with E.ON Next for another 12 months with an increase of £25 per month. Anything else I could find on USwich etc was £90 per month more at best!

Looked again this morning, as I have a habit of keeping on looking even after I'd made a decision and I couldn't find anything at all that wasnt extortionate. It's a really worrying time.

Idyllic · 21/09/2021 13:40

Anyone here with Avro Energy? Slightly nervous that they're going to go bust (I'm on a 12mth fixed tariff.)

Probably a good time to buy extra blankets /duvets /thermals for the winter. Also torches, batteries, candles etc. Just ordered 2 tower clothes airers(£15 each Aldi) to cut down on using the tumble dryer.

Neveranynamesleft · 21/09/2021 13:58

@Idyllic

Do you have exit fees ? My friend couldnt get through on the phone to Avro, it just cut off, no online chat either. They switched. May be worth having a look around.

Idyllic · 21/09/2021 14:07

@Neveranynamesleft

I tried to call them but, like your friend, I couldn't get through. I emailed them and the auto reply said they'd try to respond in 5-10 working days!

Just had a quick look and Ofgem ordered Avro to provide financial info, projections etc, which doesn't fill me with confidence.

This is the tariff DH signed us up to, we've got about 6 months left I think. Unsure about exit fees.

Gas and electricity bills to soar
BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 21/09/2021 14:08

Avro generally don't have exit fees on their fixed tarrifs.

Lahhdjdknwbjshdhb · 21/09/2021 14:09

@RagzReturnsRebooted please let me know what you decide to do re: Sainsbury’s/ EON next as I’m in the same boat!

1dayatatime · 21/09/2021 14:13

@Idyllic

Avro were issued with an order by Ofgem last week (16 September) compelling them to urgently provide financial information and their future financial projections - or in short "how much financial difficulty are you in". This is a follow up on asking the same question on the 19th August which Avro failed to respond to.

Avro currently have around 600k customers.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/09/2021 14:23

We're also with Avro, it is what it is, there's no exit fees but that's currently meaningless because if you're on one of their fixed tariffs, you want to stay on it until either it ends, or they go bust, whatever happens first.

I posted a link earlier to a MSE thread that was analysing their finances. It appears that they have lost millions over the last year and there's been some dodgy financial dealings along the way.

wildmountaintime · 21/09/2021 14:28

I am scared for people for Universal Credit.

UC rates had been frozen for 10 years before 2020. The 'extra' covid £84 a month is being removed (I cannot believe they are getting away with doing that).

A single person on UC already gets - AT MAXIMUM (often there are deductions) - £317 a month to live on.

How the fuck are people going to manage these massive increases in gas and electric and food ??!!

Never mind 'it will be tight but we'll afford it' - these people will choose between heating and washing and eating.

It's a fucking disgrace how people are treated in this country.

I switched to them at the weekend Nd I'm sticking with it as it's cheapest. Just going to be annoying as my account with PFP is still going over to British gas, luckily I didn't have credit with PFP as I had only joined them in August.

SpittinKitten · 21/09/2021 14:38

Anyone know if/how the warm home discount scheme will work for anyone whose supplier has gone under? AFAIK, to qualify for it you need to have been with your supplier in July (and then, if you're in the broader group, apply for the scheme in Sept-ish), and remain with them until you receive the credit on your account at some point in 2022...
Should/will any new supplier who takes over your account honour this?

roses2 · 21/09/2021 14:46

@BowlofNothing

Anyone thinking of switching to Avro....don't! Well, you can't at the moment as they have been banned from taking on new customers. They will be the next to go, along with some of the newer/smaller suppliers that have been undercutting the larger suppliers for months, very shortsighted.
Shock I'm with Avro. A real shame if they go under.
GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 21/09/2021 15:09

I switched yesterday having had a bit of a panic when I realised my supplier's cheapest fixed deal was more than 60% higher than my last fixed deal. I went with Eon, but I notice the deal I got yesterday has gone today. The comparison sites are becoming useless; Compare the Market aren't comparing energy prices at the moment and USwitch/MSE would only show me a handful of deals and only one of those was for a company I'd heard of. So I trawled round the Big Six and some of the prices were eye-watering: 35p a day standing charge (more than double what I used to pay) and the same per KWh (which even more than double what I was paying before).

I'd like to think it's all a bit of short-term madness, a bit like panic buying, but I am fortunate in that I can afford to suck up bigger bills (much as I might kvetch about it) but there are plenty who can't.

WoodburnersRUs · 21/09/2021 15:11

Everyone who has gas or an oil boiler who is worried about electricity cuts should get a generator that can keep the electrics of the boilers going and the fridge and…. The router if possible. Then that saves so much worry

Booknooks · 21/09/2021 15:23

They will be the next to go, along with some of the newer/smaller suppliers that have been undercutting the larger suppliers for months, very shortsighted.

Almost as if undercutting isn't always sustainable.

BlueberrySugar · 21/09/2021 15:25

Sorry if I sound completely stupid. I don't know much about rates etc I just look at go with what is the best deal.

If you're on a 'fixed rate' will the price go up? Currently in credit with both gas and electric but don't think that will last long.
