Gas and electricity bills to soar

This is worrying as it will push many into fuel poverty.
Rising food prices and empty shelves.
Is anyone worried?

@Aurea but Sainsbury’s is a subsidiary of EON. MSE marked it as safe as it’s backed by a big supplier, unless I’m misunderstanding how it works!

Sirzy · 21/09/2021 08:12

This is a big part of the problem it seems we have had a field saturated with providers and now as consumers it’s hard for us to know what to do for the best

Lahhdjdknwbjshdhb · 21/09/2021 08:14

I’ve just bought this camping lantern. It has a charging station for phones etc and clock:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07QWQ22J8/?pf_rd_p=7ec90645-5612-498c-b0e9-5c2b5a3a233b&encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_wg=jToZA&pf_rd_r=XXH1HBRTJA6TZS75KJM6&hsa_cr_id=8043893180902&ref=sbx_be_s_sparkle_scm_asin_0_img&pd_rd_plhdr=t&pd_rd_w=sggEi&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&aaxitk=566c4a2ffbbb475f9e17388aa88753ac&pd_rd_r=b282955a-8b6d-4649-b628-054881d6d7a9

Will be buying a second canister for our BNQ as back up. If it’s doesn’t get used, we’ll definitely use it next summer. It’s got a heat ring so at least we’d be able to boil up pasta/ cup of tea!

Lahhdjdknwbjshdhb · 21/09/2021 08:15

BBQ!

Billandben444 · 21/09/2021 08:16

Please don't rely on gas central heating as it needs electricity to do its stuff. In the 70s we had an old gas boiler with no electric input - I vaguely remember having to manually wind something up each week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2021 08:33

We have a kelly kettle that produces boiling water out of twigs. They are very expensive and a bit scary to use. You wouldn't be able to use one inside. But for those it's an option for, they are very efficient.

I might bundle some twigs together for it this week.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2021 08:34

I guess we also all ought to be aware that it can be extremely dangerous to bbq in an enclosed space like a garage and that camping stoves need good ventilation in order not to risk CO poisoning.

I loved my Kelly Kettle when I had one. The ex took it in the divorce, they knew it'd hurt me more then them fucking off tbh.

Wilko sell kindling packs for under £2 that work well.

There is also Trangia as mentioned, works on meths pretty well.

There is also a BCB Fire Dragon Folding Pocket Stove that costs £2 or there abouts that uses solid fuels like Fire Dragon Blocks.

There is also Folding twig stoves that come with solid fuel pans. Cost about £10 from Amazon. The solid fuel pans can also burn liquid fuel like meths but also hand sanitizer. So if, like.me, people have endless bottles of santizer knocking around, you can use it to heat water and such. Burns pretty well.

justasking111 · 21/09/2021 08:42

In the 70s we had tea lights on the bacon meat counters so we could see. The checkouts had a winder handle you could enter the amount and turn the handle to register the sale. Now if the lights go out you cannot shop. We did know ahead of time when it would happen.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2021 08:43

So in terms of gas does this graph show that the amount of gas we have in our system is now as good as it was last year, but we are down on lng which would be our actual storage? How does that compare to previous years beyond last year?

@Aurea

Sorry....here it is......
Where is that chart from @Aurea? In one way it is useful to know who is at risk , in another not as it might cause people to leave the at risk companies in droves and then the companies will definitely go bust!

I am nervoously staying put (Bristol Energy, which is owned by Together Energy).

Aurea · 21/09/2021 08:56

A friend sent the chart to me so I don't know its provenance - sorry!

I guess with Sainsburys, although they are backed by EON, could they not switch you to a less attractive tariff with EON if they were to go bust?

Please don't use camping stoves or bbqs inside, I'm sure people have died of carbon monoxide poisoning due to this.

Mumtofourandnomore · 21/09/2021 09:05

@1dayatatime - most of what you say is correct but BG customers won’t pay the £200m cost, it will be recovered through an industry levelisation process - the cost of unhedged customers will be shared amongst all suppliers so everybody will pay for the little suppliers who didn’t hedge their forward volumes. For customers being transferred power prices will go from 12/13p a unit to 20p a unit (price cap level) and they’ll still be loss making as wholesale prices are at about 25p (and winter is still not yet here….)

Sirzy · 21/09/2021 09:13

I have just looked closely and it seems (from my prices I am paying at least) the biggest hike is going to be in standing charges. I am currently paying 8.8p a day each for gas and electric and for the best tarrif now they would be 26p and 24p respectively.

Unit prices have gone up 1p a unit on gas and 4p on electricity

So in terms of being able to do things in the home to keep bills down the standing rates are going to make the impact of that minimal (still worth doing of course)

The higher standing charge is still only £185 of my annual £1400 bill though. Most of its actual energy use. My kids are hideous with leaving everything on/ running/ lit/ open - anything unhelpful basically! Going to try and get them all on board….
Sirzy · 21/09/2021 09:35

I agree swaying but it’s still £120 a year increase that you don’t do anything about at all sadly

MrsPnut · 21/09/2021 09:36

When our fix with Ovo was up in March, I spent hours doing the sums on our annual Kwh usage and the daily standing charge to get the best deal at the time.

For every customer on a fix for a set period, it makes life much easier for companies to hedge their future requirements. Setting up hedges is expensive and good companies will try to collar it if they can so they can offset some of the cost of the derivative and still leave themselves with some wriggle room.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 21/09/2021 10:59

This is the British Gas tariff I was switched to (from PFP) they say themselves that it is set at the price cap, so if anyone wants it for comparison. Their guess at my annual usage is very close to my actual figures, which is unusual to quite impressed there.

I have a Kelly Kettle and camping stoves of various types plus 5litres of lamp oil and several storm lanterns. I very much doubt there will be blackouts, but we are prepared if there are. Not sure about the 2 freezers in the garage though (apparently they don't cost a lot to run but I may get rid of one), DH reckons he could run them off a generator to keep the food safe.

I've switched to sainsbury and still thinking they would be fine as they aren't actually a supplier really, the tariff is the same as Eon equivalent. Tempted to cancel the switch and go for Eon Next instead just in case, I don't particularly care about the Nectar points. Will pop over to MSE forums and see what the consensus is.

They have but only due to not doing it safely. You can use camping stoves inside as long as it is well ventilated (eg next to an open window) and infrequently (so not multiple times in the same day).

Looks like the Sainsbury/Eon fix has been pulled.

That's the one I changed to yesterday!

RagzReturnsRebooted · 21/09/2021 11:32

Well, price risen anyway. Apparently the standing charge rates doubled!
