Gas and electricity bills to soar

This is worrying as it will push many into fuel poverty.
Rising food prices and empty shelves.
Is anyone worried?

Yes, it is a worry and even the daily Mail are reporting this today and being negative ( it's not good news at all :(
I'm not sure how people will manage.

bridgeofslides · 18/09/2021 18:09

Holy shot. Just read this too.

Mooloolabababy · 18/09/2021 18:09

It's definitely a concern for us. We already pay £190 a month for gas and electricity and that's for a 3 bed semi with an open fire and a log burner so no gas used for a gas fire!

howlongto · 18/09/2021 18:14

I just got us onto a new fix and it will be £150 a month. Used to be £98 Sad

SpindleWhorl · 18/09/2021 18:21

121% increase as of now, the Daily Mail are saying.

Food prices increasing. Transport costs increasing.

£20 a week per person uplift to end. 🙁

dontdoitlikethatdoitlikethis · 18/09/2021 18:23

Yes, I've been on a £105 pcm fix which just ended.

The new fix - the cheapest having tried ALL the comparison sites - is £148 pcm.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 18/09/2021 18:25

My tariff is due to end next month and my renewal quote has taken me from £140/month to £240/month. Its beyond belief. I cant even get quotes from other providers as most of them are saying they're not taking on new customers at the moment. So utterly fed up with this noddy government and their ineptitude and lies.

dontdoitlikethatdoitlikethis · 18/09/2021 18:25

And that is with me using 4% less than I used to 😠

Etherel · 18/09/2021 18:28

Why are some companies so much cheaper?

I have just signed up to an estimated £73pcm dual fuel deal, fixed for 2 years (although I can cancel anytime). Was offered to me by a big company while I was doing my weekly shop and is about £20pcm cheaper than I am currently paying.

RavenT · 18/09/2021 18:29

Yep. New tariff taken me to 114 a month, which is apparently a very good deal. I used to pay under 90 quid a couple of years ago. Single parent and am feeling pretty despondent about price rises everywhere. Sad

Wotwhywhen · 18/09/2021 18:29

Who's the government blaming for this?
Brexit? Covid? Foreign types in dinghies? The poor?
Got to know who to beat with the pointy end of the stick this week.

changingsheets · 18/09/2021 18:30

Mines payg and already I'm putting £30 in the electric per week 🙈

Beautifulday345 · 18/09/2021 18:31

This is scary

CeeJay81 · 18/09/2021 18:32

This is worrying indeed. Everything going up yet universal credit cut and paying more NI.
Our contract with eon is due to end in Nov, they've just offered us another year for a slightly higher price, I decided to take it as we feared this coming. It's still going to go up but from £100(dual fuel) a month to £107, as long we use the same amount of course. We will see if that ends up being a good deal, but at least we can budget for the increase rather than fearing it going up more.

Midnightstar76 · 18/09/2021 18:40

Yes I’ve had a nasty shock. I was with a utility company that went under in January. Have had to shell out about £500.00 just to get my direct debit payments down but it is now about £170.00 per month, never have I ever paid that much and I am on the cheapest deal there is for me. Have now locked in to a deal with one of the six main providers as don’t want to go with a smaller company that goes under again. It took until August for me to see what my payments would be with the new company I am with!

Helenluvsrob · 18/09/2021 18:40

Just to say this ain’t a Uk thing - so brexit etc has nowt to do with it.

Had a lovely week with my sis in Spain and the monthly bills there are going up by the same as ours - over £100/month.

She has a small shop though and the bills for that are eye watering especially after zircon is used all day at the moment. The cans of pop explode otherwise 😱

Lockheart · 18/09/2021 18:45

brexit etc has nowt to do with it

The UK has very little gas storage capacity. It is heavily reliant on imports. Brexit has much to do with it (as do several other factors).

I know.
Prices of food as well as energy.

It just feels like no matter how much you earn, it gets taken as quickly as it comes.

Mamamia7962 · 18/09/2021 18:59

It's not just the UK, the whole of Europe are facing higher fuel costs.

Corrag · 18/09/2021 19:11

I've been paying £98 per month, fixed rate plan ends 19th Oct and the cheapest they're quoting now is £147.

CorrBlimeyGG · 18/09/2021 19:12

The issue is wider than the UK, but combining it with inflation being at levels not seen since the 90s, benefit cuts, wage stagnation* and work insecurity, it's yet another indicator of the increasing inequality in the UK.

  • Yes, some people have experienced wage rises. That doesn't help those that have not.
coolhwip · 18/09/2021 19:18

Sorry can someone explain fixed tariffs to me? We’ve always just had standard tariffs.

We are in a 3 bed end terrace and pay £36 for gas and £30 for electricity, although we’ve never given a meter reading since we moved in 2014.

The meters are outside so maybe the companies are accessing themselves?

GenderApostatemk2 · 18/09/2021 19:19

I’m very thankfuI I fixed for 2 years in May, surprisingly Brit Gas were the cheapest. I’m shocked at people paying over £150 for dual fuel in a 3 bed house 😱. I’m currently paying £80 a month and am £170 in credit.
I also managed to get £30 a month knocked off my Vigin media bill too by threatening to leave, no way was I paying £80 a month for a package when we don’t even use virgin tv or the landline.
I was shocked when I added up all our direct debit bills excluding the mortgage and they come to a smidge over £500, that’s utilities, council tax, water rates, life cover, car insurance and tax x2, water rates, tv/internet.

ditalini · 18/09/2021 19:20

Yes, I was also lucky to have my new fix start earlier this year but it's still higher than I was on previously and depressing to see that my usage has gone down but bills are still up.

Fuel poverty is going to hit hard for those in poorly insulated, damp homes this winter, how ever careful they are.
