Gas and electricity bills to soar

This is worrying as it will push many into fuel poverty.
Rising food prices and empty shelves.
Is anyone worried?

Just switched the other day. I was with green energy network that went bust at the start of the year and got moved to EDF. Did a price comparison and got quoted £1000 per year moreConfused

Thankfully I can afford it (would rather not pay it) but wtf do people on lower incomes do? One thousand bloody pounds more?!

GenderApostatemk2 · 18/09/2021 21:27

As for the carbon dioxide shortage, I imagine the vast majority of people have no idea it’s used to extend the shelf life of stuff like chicken and cheese. Without it, chicken will have a usable date of 3 days instead of 7 ( from when it’s packaged).

Peanutsandchilli · 18/09/2021 21:34

We're one of the lucky utility point customers (who have just gone bust) so now ofgem are switching us to whoever the hell they like. We've been told not to try and switch, in order to protect our credit balances. Can't say I'm not worried.

ColouringPencils · 18/09/2021 21:35

Just been reading about this in the Guardian, head of Bernard Matthews saying 'Christmas is cancelled' due to the effect it will have on turkey farming. It's just one thing after another, isn't it?

byvirtue · 18/09/2021 21:42

Our supplier emailed last week to tell us our electricity would be going up £1000pa. Managed to switch earlier in the week so it’s now “only” going up £500pa. Still a big jump on our usual bill of £2k per year (no gas but oil for some of our heating).

Stellaris22 · 18/09/2021 21:44

It's shocking things have gotten to this point. DH works in the energy industry and we've known this was going to happen for months. So did the government and energy suppliers. No interest in warning people though.

Electricity from France has pretty much gone due to an interconnector fire, and UK is relying on old coal plants in emergencies. It's a scary time for energy supply, hence the prices.

PicsInRed · 18/09/2021 21:49

I'm not worried about higher prices, I'm worried about the gas supplies being turned way down or even turned off. We're far too reliant on non-allied supply of a critical good.

That's where the danger lies.

Stellaris22 · 18/09/2021 21:54

You wouldn't know it from the news, but on the 15th the UK was close to blackouts. We were charging our camping battery because of the situation.

Notlabeled · 18/09/2021 21:55

Almost as if spaffing billions of pounds on windmills that don't turn without wind was a bad idea. Hopefully this will show the lie of the green lobby that renewables will lower the cost of energy for everyone while keeping the lights on.
If only the UK was sat on top of huge reserves of natural gas that could provide cheap and reliable base load energy....oh wait, it is. I hope all those who opposed fracking are gonna enjoy the huge increases in energy prices, when we could of been totally self sufficient in energy. Let's not forget the increase will also hit business and make our manufacturing even less competitive and cost jobs and increase prices in shops even more. Hyper inflation here we come!

I wouldn't worry about lack of turkey for Xmas, you probably won't be able to afford to cook it, even if the power is still on by then.

We are off buy a diesel generator, it won't make Greta very happy but at least I won't be sat in the dark.

StarCat2020 · 18/09/2021 21:56

Worryingly unreported was the French interconnector that caught fire this week, we were scarily close to blackouts but it wasn't even reported
I have taken a keen interest in our electricity network for a couple of years now (I know sad) and the systematic lack of investment in the infrastructure is really going to start to show over the next few years.

Funny how no one said a word when prices plummeted in March 2020.

A huge number of people who worked in the energy industry lost their jobs and will never work in the industry again.

The prices are “soaring” from a historic low and will be far cheaper than say 2014.

Stop falling prey to the bollocks being printed in the red tops.

Your bank accounts are empty because of brexit and soaring food and transport prices.

Either way, You want your house to be warm and you must have oil and gas companies operating safely and investing fucktons of money on Net Zero?

You should expect that energy prices are going to go up. The U.K. govt cancelled oil exploration licenses in the North Sea in recent years so any oil left behind will never be produced, sooooo guess what? Less supply higher prices.

See that you’re being played by red tops and extinction rebellion and learn where your energy actually comes from, not to mention the materials to make your iPad and your Tesla. They don’t grown on trees.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 18/09/2021 22:00

In my area of the USA, electric has already doubled and gasoline fuel is going up weekly. Natural gas for heating is holding steady for now, but usually goes up in November.

I suppose if you base Christmas solely on turkey then perhaps.
FreakinFrankNFurter · 18/09/2021 22:02

Bloody hell, after reading this i've just done a comparison as our tariff is due to end next month. Ours is looking to increase by around £70 per month! WTF!

We're fortunate we can afford it. I can't imagine what those already struggling are going to do, particularly with the loss of £80 per month UC.

NothingIsWrong · 18/09/2021 22:05

My supplier went bust two days ago so I'm at the mercy of whoever OFGEM punts us off to.

Stellaris22 · 18/09/2021 22:05

We do need renewables in our energy production and we absolutely should be viewing Net Zero as a priority.

We need an energy mix and renewables are an important part of that. This also includes investing in nuclear and phasing out coal.

The age of some of our power stations is a worrying factor.

I hear about this every day with a DH who WFH and models future energy scenarios.

PaperDolphin · 18/09/2021 22:08

Our energy supplier has just ceased trading. We have been advised not to switch and to wait for a new provider to be appointed. Very worried about what these means financially for us and how long we will be locked in to whatever deal we land up with.

lilacdinosaur · 18/09/2021 22:11

Very worried. Other things will need to be sacrificed to afford it unfortunately.
We already try everything not to over use.
We switched a couple of weeks ago as our renewal price was tripled, our new deal is still double what we were paying but it was the cheapest I could find anywhere.

Notlabeled · 18/09/2021 22:12

But everyone protests at the mention of nuclear, and renewables clearly are not keeping costs down or the lights on. Net zero means no electricity, no heating, no cars and no jobs. Keep voting for these eco fascists and expect this to get worse. When your children ask what we used for light before candles, you can tell them about electricity Grin
Fivefourthreetwo · 18/09/2021 22:14

My fixed rate electricity tariff ends in October. I've just switched to EDF 3 year fixed. Looking at about another £600 a year.

Nat6999 · 18/09/2021 22:15

I'm £558 in credit due to not being home full time due to illness, plus I get a warm homes grant in March every year. I'm hoping that & the £69 a month I pay will keep me going until things settle down again.

LindyLou2020 · 18/09/2021 22:15

I try so hard to be an optimist, and not fall for the scaremongering headlines on the front pages of newspapers, or online news.
But I do always want to stay informed as to what's going on in the world.
Not just about energy matters, but anything.
I don't always succeed in staying positive and not letting it all get to me, I might add.
But tonight I just can't help thinking that we, (well, the so-called "little people"), are all being screwed.

tiddlysquat · 18/09/2021 22:16

I've just switched to a company that is said to be going bust next week (thanks for the recommendation money saving expert). Only just done it and had email from old company last night saying they could stop it if I changed my mind so will be on the phone to them Monday morning. Nightmare .
Going to then try and find a fix with one of the big companies

Stellaris22 · 18/09/2021 22:16

That's ok, I'll ask the experts at the well respected energy consultancy where DH works and actually know what they're talking about.

tiddlysquat · 18/09/2021 22:18

I've got solar so next summer I might have to look into solar batteries I think ?
