So sorry I can't use the vote (haven't a clue how to do it)
The questions is clear.. A simple yes or no..... After the Queen dies should the Royal Family continue... Yes or no!

I know Charles is chomping at the bit to be king, but I just can’t see it happening— this is based on nothing more than a wotIreckon gut feeling, mind you.

The only way Charles won’t be king is if he dies before the Queen. Otherwise, he will be king.

Anyone thinking they will skip over him to William or some such, doesn’t have even a passing understating of how the whole thing works.

There is no skipping. At all. There is abdication, but that’s only happened once. And Charles is not going to abdicate.

Death aside, Charles will be king.

Can you imagine if some one Nicola Sturgeon was top person in this country - fucking hell...

Can you imagine if Boris was head guy of this country

Yes indeed, imagine the pure bliss and luxury of realising your leader is a mithering wanker and being able to vote them out within 5 years rather than wait for them to die of old age and be followed by their potentially equally dire child for the rest of that person's natural life, followed by another dire child for the rest of that person's natural life ...ad infinitum.

Elections. Democracy. Let's do this.

If Boris Johnson is still PM, big, fat yes.

I think it's ludicrous to pretend that these people are better than the rest of us because it's their "birthright". Times have changed and this institution is stuck a long way in the past.

Not sure why people think William and Kate will be so much better than Charles. W & K's laziness is pretty well documented if you look at the court circular.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 17/09/2021 21:34

The whole rickety arcane setup was exposed by the debacle of Boris proroguing parliament, or attempting to. The Queen had to go along with it and approve it, although the process was later deemed unlawful. This weird Regina versus Regina moment rather exposed her position as a pawn in the game, rather than some upholder of lawful values.

They are not better than the rest of us - but they do offer stability. Nations with monarchies do generally fair better than Republics.

In 2018 - precovd Kate did 100 official engagements whilst also pregnant/ just having a new baby and caring for her other young children. William did around 250, that's one official engagement every 1.5 days.

How is that lazy? I can understand if you dont want a RF but no point in lying about them to prove your point.

They are an absurd irrelevance, an affront to democracy and an expensive embarrassment to us all. Let us have an opt out for paying for them - then those that support them can pay their bills.

Suits me. I’d happily pay 100 times more than I do if it would shut their critics up.

Monarchs tend to steer clear of political movements which does offer stability, elected officials bring their own political beliefs with them which would lead the country to be in constant political turmoil lurching from one side to the other every few years.

Like we are seeing in Scotland now. Nicola Sturgeon is hacking away at womens rights and being photographed with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence who have links to PIE and other dubious organisations. if some one like her was head of this country women would be well and truly fucked.

Yes our RF and the House of Lords do come with pomp but it actually works.

Look at the state of the US after what Biden have done.

Look at Putin

There is an odd hatred of the UK at the moment but against other countries we are not doing too bad.

With the status quo - no politician is bigger that the queen or king. It keeps them in check and they dont get too big for their boots.

00100001 · 17/09/2021 22:06

Yes and queen did 293 and Charlie did over 500.

So yeah in comparison Wills is lacking BIG time, he did fewer engagements than a 90 year old, and half that of his father.

If you can’t manage to work the voting system on MN I doubt you can bring down the monarchy.

Why do you ask?

Notimeforaname · 17/09/2021 22:21

No.
They're so creepy and messed up.

Evesgarden · 17/09/2021 22:21

@Handsoffstrikesagain

Charles will be King within the next 5 years, of that I think we can be sure. The monarchy will suffer a dip during his reign but alas it’ll be a short time time on the throne. Wills and Kate will revitalise things again to continue for another hundred years. We will always have a reigning King or Queen, I’d bet the lot on it.
I agree with your first two sentences and I hope you are right about the the last two.

We are entering an era where very small movement are thirsting for the tearing down of historical statues, deleting historical figures, burning books that they find offending and unfortunately its being accepted in the name of 'be kind'. A statue was taken down in a stately home near me because it caused offence, it was a statue of a Moor and had a plaque explaining who it was, it had been there since the 1700s but some one/people (?) thought it looked like a slave so its been hidden away.

We are in an odd unstable time and I find that worrying - the last thing we need is a referendum to get rid of the RF

Sarahlou63 · 17/09/2021 22:23

Yes, but with the caveat that the royal family should only consist of (i.e. be publicly funded by) the direct heir and his/her family in the same way as the Dutch and other modern European monarchies are now.

So no more Eugenie/Beatrice freeloading - Anne, Edward and Sophie are all doing a good job for the "Firm" but their children are (or will be) self sufficient in the future. Andrew will be a huge problem for Charles - fuck knows how that will play out.

Sloth66 · 17/09/2021 22:24

No.
The RF are an ever increasing group of unelected, unaccountable and undistinguished individuals. They lead lives of extravagance and luxury, moving between their palaces, castles and stately homes with retinues of staff. It’s obscene

Purplestripeysock · 17/09/2021 22:28

I think there is a lot of confusion around about what the monarch actually is and how that is different from the Royal family

This.
