Neighbours washing..

washingfiasco · 17/09/2021 14:01

A weird one but i need some light shed please wise people of mumsnet.
I live in a row of houses/flats on a roundabout, right neighbour is a house, left neighbour is a block of flats. Recently i've come home and there is a washing maiden that you'd sort of hang up on a radiator hanging off my fence. This fence is the one that is next to the flats, the flats have no gardens so i'm assuming its one of theirs.
I ignored it the first, second and third time but today i've come back with an ill child and had to get through 2 hanging off my fence and one right in front of my gate with a sleeping 2 year old who's ill and it's just annoyed me.
Would i be unreasonable to tell them to not hang stuff of the fence? I understand they want it to dry but it's frustrated me today!!!

Can’t see it either

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/09/2021 15:14

Still can't see the diagram, this site is from the dark agesHmm

PumpkinKlNG · 17/09/2021 15:14

Can see it now thanks, yeh I wouldn’t be impressed with that!

blubberyboo · 17/09/2021 15:16

I see witch baby’s now

The obstruction is in the public walkway so yes it’s annoying but I’m not sure if you can argue other than the fact it’s your fence they are hanging off.

flotsomandjetsome · 17/09/2021 15:16

I would at the very least move it along the fence so it's well away from your gate, and if it's your fence, keep an eye out to see who brings it in and ask them not to do it anymore

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 17/09/2021 15:18

@WitchBaby

Does this work? (Sorry OP, I’ve taken over your diagram Grin)
Thank you!!

I'd just grow something up it OP

WitchBaby · 17/09/2021 15:19

Yes, can you move it along so they hopefully take the hint? failing that knock it off the fenceBlushGrin

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 17/09/2021 15:19

I can see the reposted diagram.

OP do you own the fence? If so then I think you are not unreasonable to ask them not to hang their laundry on your fence and it might damage it over time. If you don't own the fence I think you need to suck it up, but perhaps put a note on asking them politely not to post it so close to your gate.

Even if there isn't outside space to hang laundry in the flats you can get airers to use inside - we have one of these and they give plenty of drying space without taking up much floor space.

BlackShadowCat · 17/09/2021 15:20

Thanks WitchBaby!

Are they not worried someone may steal it?

TheWoleb · 17/09/2021 15:20

Who owns the fence?
I know you're saying, "my fence" but people often say that about any fence bordering their garden even if it isnt theirs.

If it is your fence which you paid for then they cant hang anything on it. Take out a little basket, put the clothes into it, remove the hanging device from the fence and leave it all sitting nicely with a note telling them to stop attaching things to your fence.

DDiva · 17/09/2021 15:22

I wouldn't want to walk past other peoples washing to get to my front door. Is there anywhere near the flats you can move it ?

Softfresh · 17/09/2021 15:23

I wouldn't call it a major issue but if I owned the fence I think I would probably be annoyed by it. If it continued to happen, the weight of wet washing could damage the fence over time.

If you do own the fence then just take the washing off and leave it on the floor, they will soon get the message. Either that or leave a sign telling them not to do it? It's a nightmare drying laundry in a flat but it's a bit cheeky not to ask permission to hang your knickers on a strangers fence.

DrGoogleSaysSo · 17/09/2021 15:24

It's your fence so they shouldn't put anything on it. That would annoy me too.

washingfiasco · 17/09/2021 15:25

Yes definitely 1000% my fence. On the diagram i have put the flats meeting the actualy back of my house, in reality my house goes out about 2 more metres and then fence off the back of my house. Appreciate everyones insight, i will politely ask them to not hang it off the fence!

@BlackShadowCat

Thanks WitchBaby!

Are they not worried someone may steal it?

Apparently not, it's a weird place to put it as the carpark isn't gated or anything!

black bin bag take washing off place in bag with airers on top & this is my fence please find somewhere else to hang washing - or don't move it this time but put a note on each airer stating this is my fence please don't hang your washing here or I will move it

makcrossing · 17/09/2021 15:30

I don't think you have to be polite about it! I'd put it in a carrier bag somewhere out of the way with a note saying please do not hang your washing on my fence, the fence belongs to me and it's blocking the path. I am all for hanging washing outside, but this would annoy me so much!

mumwon · 17/09/2021 15:31

I think under these circumstances if I were a tenant of flats I would "dark" my washing & bring it in early morning

godmum56 · 17/09/2021 15:35

If you own the fence, its simple, they can't hang things from it. actually the top of the fence like that is the worst place to hang things bith from a leverage point of view and from the risk to breaking the top of the fence. I'd just put a sign up saying that items fastened to this fence will be removed.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 17/09/2021 15:45

I'd peg a note to it. Can't be arsed seeking people out to sort their own shit out.

480Widdio · 17/09/2021 15:48

Just remove it and leave it on the floor.

ChateauMargaux · 17/09/2021 15:50

Cheeky fuckers.. I agree with poster who said burn the fence down..

Or maybe steal mismatching socks and bras.... or, do I have a hole punch? You could.punch small holes in some but not all of the clothes, a sharp scissors and some artful little snips would serve a similar purpose.

BedTed · 17/09/2021 15:53

Fuck that! It might damage your fence. I’d remove it and place it in a bag in the floor

BoredZelda · 17/09/2021 15:54

That would annoy me too. You are supposed to dry human beings with a towel, not leave them to drip dry.

I dunno, depending on what type of ill they are, hanging them on the fence might be preferred.

Chloemol · 17/09/2021 15:55

If it’s your fence I would ask them to remove it

Heavy wet washing will eventually damage the fence
