Fruit flies?

Anyone have them at the moment?!? So annoying. Even the vinegar and fairly liquid trick isn’t working :(

Put cider vinegar in a mug or bowl, cover with cling film and make a few holes in. They will go in the holes but not be able to get back out. Works every time 😃

PartyPotato · 16/09/2021 20:13

Urgh yes! Got them from an old melon in the bin last week, cleaned the bin inside and out and still finding them flitting around the kitchen!

Evesgarden · 16/09/2021 20:15

Here too! My kids eat a lot of fruit and its pissing me off now

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 16/09/2021 20:16

Driving me mad. I thought I’d left some fruit to rot somewhere I couldn’t find. But two friends in the past couple of days, from different parts of the country, have said they’ve had masses of fruit flies coming in this year too.

TheHouseILiveIn · 16/09/2021 20:17

Yes, I started a thread on this last week. I've never had them before. No idea where the bastards are coming from. Currently trying the cider vinegar and washing up liquid trick but they don't seem interested Confused

Mammma91 · 16/09/2021 20:19

We have them too, i am at the end of my tether trying to get rid of them!!!!

theneverendinglaundry · 16/09/2021 20:28

Yes! Here too! They're driving us all mad.

NamiSwan · 16/09/2021 20:33

Yep we have way more than usual and like you, the usual vinegar and washing up liquid fly trap isn't working 😫

Popcornriver · 16/09/2021 20:33

Also never had them before and we've had loads of them. In the end I opened all windows and went round the whole house with a bottle of fly and wasp spray spraying any that I saw. Seems to have done the trick, this was a couple of weeks ago but I'm not putting fresh fruit out in the bowl just yet. Still putting it all in the fridge.

It's strange actually, I mentioned them to my sister who said she's had loads in her house for the first time ever and her FIL has complained about them as well.

NigellaSeed · 16/09/2021 20:34

I opened my garden and good wheelie bin with the front door open like an idiot and let all the buggers in. will try the vinegar trap. I normally spray raid on the kitchen window sill

Ijustknowitstimetogo · 16/09/2021 20:39

Yes lots just in the last week. Some in the kitchen and the odd few in the bathroom.

TheHouseIsOnFire · 16/09/2021 20:45

I heard that they live in drains so I put some acid down my sink and there’s definitely less of them this week. I also did the trick with the bottle of vinegar but I didn’t have much so put some fruit juice in too. Have got about 6 or 7 floating in it but there were definitely more than that around last week! I was thinking it might be because our food waste collections have been suspended due to covid (lack of staff) so more food decomposing in bins, but if everyone is having the same issue maybe it’s a weather thing?

kungfupannda · 16/09/2021 20:49

YES! I've got the little bastards all over the place. I thought I'd got rid of them, then they returned in greater strength a couple of days ago. Have cleaned all bins, surfaces, checked for food under sofas etc and can't find anything that could be attracting them.

Going to try some of those ninja things.

hopeishere · 16/09/2021 21:02

@Elieza

I’ve got them in compost that I reported a plant into. There’s now a swarm. Something must have laid eggs in the compost and now they’ve hatched. Great. Black flies galore.
Those are not fruit flies. We had that, it's some sort of gnat. We got yellow sticky things from Amazon and that sorted it. It was WILD how many there were.
Peace43 · 16/09/2021 21:07

I had some and found a rotten spud hiding at the back of the rack…

Noorandapples · 16/09/2021 21:22

I've just seen a tiktok hack on this! She put pineapple pieces in a bottle, then rolled paper into a funnel shaped cone and popped it into the top of the bottle, so the flies could get in easily but not out.

TheFoundations · 16/09/2021 21:31

The fruit doesn't have to be over ripe. They hang around fresh, green bananas, looking at their watches, tapping their feet, waiting... waiting... inviting all their mates round... waiting...

TrashPanda · 16/09/2021 21:36

They were driving me mad, they were everywhere. I tried the fruit, vinegar & washing up liquid but it didn't work. Got the fruit ninja things linked up thread and they're all gone.

foxy86 · 16/09/2021 21:40

I noticed 2 yesterday, they are still here. Cleaned the kitchen and disinfected it but still here. Just 2 and can I heck swat or catch em. I wouldn’t mind but it’s a brand new kitchen that only got fitted a couple of days ago!
I do remember about 10 year ago I had a massive fruit fly problem that was my own doing as I left an empty can of sweet corn on the side for a couple of days. When I moved it all these flies came out, not my finest moment!

DirtyDancing · 16/09/2021 21:51

Just spritz them with fly spray. Little buggars.

I have one of these in the kitchen with a bit of orange juice and apple/pear core, sometimes banana.

I let them out every day in the garden, clean and repeat daily.

@Sexnotgender

My fly cemetery.
As long as Stephen King doesn't know about it😂

@ginghamstarfish

We had something like this a while ago, think it started with a pot plant I bought for the kitchen. They were called Fungus Gnats (yuk) and live in drains, plant roots etc. Chucked the plant, bleached the plugholes, took a while but got rid. Have another plant now but only water from the base, as apparently they like damp soil too.
Ooh, interesting. I don't have house plants but someone gave me one recently. I may need to ditch it 🪴
sueelleker · 17/09/2021 19:01

I'm probably going to regret saying this, but this is the first time for 3 years that I haven't had any. I usually use a shallow dish of vinegar and Fairy liquid, but I've got my eye on this from Amazon if I need it. It looks rather neat.www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DNX8192/?psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it&coliid=I29OQ1JCELM19K&colid=3A79FKCWUBGR4&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-am-i-being-unreasonable-4350898-Fruit-flies" rel="nofollow" target="blank">amazon.co.uk/dp/B01DNX8192/?coliid=I29OQ1JCELM19K&colid=3A79FKCWUBGR4&psc=1&ref=lv_ov_lig_dp_it
