Fruit flies?

Anyone have them at the moment?!? So annoying. Even the vinegar and fairly liquid trick isn’t working :(

Yes. Driving me crackers!

Trixabellecrowther · 16/09/2021 19:27

Im sorry but this just reminds me of my favourite quote 'Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana'.

Anyway
Yes I've got loads of them. Meh. I ignore ignore.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/09/2021 19:32

I had them for a few weeks after a kitchen food compost bin got a bit ripe.
I used these from Amazon - bit grim, but I'd rather have a few days of the buggers caught on sticky fly strips than flying around and breeding.
fly strips

It got rif of them - unfortunately the dangling strip was too much of a temptation for my cat, although I'd placed it really high, thinking it was out of her reach. She took a flying leap, it fell on her, and I had a scared cat zooming around the flat until I managed to catch her and pull it off of her fur.
It did get rid of the fruit flies though probably took 5-7 days, but they're gone.

FromEden · 16/09/2021 19:35

I got rid if them last year by putting a bit of banana in an empty jar, waiting for them to swarm it and then putting the lid on the jar and releasing them outside. Had to do this multiple times but it did work.

ginghamstarfish · 16/09/2021 19:37

We had something like this a while ago, think it started with a pot plant I bought for the kitchen. They were called Fungus Gnats (yuk) and live in drains, plant roots etc. Chucked the plant, bleached the plugholes, took a while but got rid. Have another plant now but only water from the base, as apparently they like damp soil too.

Sexnotgender · 16/09/2021 19:39

Yes! Motherfuckers.

I’ve created a fly cemetery though, mwahaha.

500ml liquid bottle cut about 2/3 of the way up. 1/2 a cup of water, 1/2 a cup of vinegar, 2 teaspoons sugar, 1 teaspoon washing up liquid. Mix.
Place top 1/3 upside down on top.

TheGriffle · 16/09/2021 19:42

I have them too but on my succulent plant and my indoor ivy. Watered them yesterday and a whole swarm flew up from the pots.

Shittybobbins · 16/09/2021 19:43

I got a lovely set of oil and balsamic vinegar decanters from IKEA. Merrily using them for my salad dressings until I noticed the vinegar bottle with spout was a perfect fruit fly trap 🤮
I've just left cheap vinegar in them ever since and they're controlling the swarm.

Try this.

PumpkinsGalore · 16/09/2021 19:48

Yes! No matter what I do, they appear out of the bin, even if it's only dry stuff in there and has been cleaned with new bag! They're in abundance

Slothkin · 16/09/2021 19:52

From past experience the little fuckers love the sugary water in vases of plants - I was tearing my hair out as to what on earth they could be feeding on.

See also weevils - if they’re coming back and you’ve cleaned out all kitchen cupboards etc. check if you have a child’s pasta collage behind a wardrobe…I felt like a genius when I figured that out for a colleague!

PumpkinsGalore · 16/09/2021 19:55

One just landed on my screen..... FFS.

If you're reading this you CF fruit fly - FUCK OFF!!!!!

ItsSunnyOutside · 16/09/2021 19:56

Yes, they are little buggers! We had them for about 2 weeks, I can't stand them. We couldn't work out where they were coming from, we keep all our fruit and veg in the fridge, so we emptied all our cupboards, cleaned the kitchen, top to bottom, but they still kept appearing. Next, we poured bleach down the sinks, took any bin bags out straight away, even checked the plants but they didn't appear to be coming from the soil etc.

We eventually managed to get rid of them by doing a couple of fruit traps with strawberries. Caught and trapped so many of them. It was grim but after a few days it did the trick.

DotBall · 16/09/2021 19:57

Spray them with fly spray. Job done. We had them earlier this summer but not had the autumn onslaught yet…

TheFoundations · 16/09/2021 19:58

@JayAlfredPrufrock

Can I Can I Can I?

Time flies like an arrow.

Fruit flies like a banana.

I thank you.

That's very pleasing Grin
scrivette · 16/09/2021 19:59

Yep loads on the sunflowers in a vase in my kitchen I noticed today. They seem later this year, I am sure I had lots early summer last year.

LaMariposa · 16/09/2021 20:01

Get a cape sundew. Impossible to kill and mine hoovers up fruit flies. It’s like living fly paper.

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/09/2021 20:02

We have loads! My parents do too! Bloody pain!

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/09/2021 20:03

@Elieza

I’ve got them in compost that I reported a plant into. There’s now a swarm. Something must have laid eggs in the compost and now they’ve hatched. Great. Black flies galore.
Those are fungus gnats, not fruit flies.
SilverDragonfly1 · 16/09/2021 20:07

I thought ours were because of the bloody binman strike that went on for almost 2 months (bloody strike, not bloody binmen- they already do a nasty job and should be paid fairly!) but looks like maybe not then.

Sexnotgender · 16/09/2021 20:08

My fly cemetery.

Fruit flies?
TwoAndCooPlease · 16/09/2021 20:11

Yes they're fucking everywhere

I took Raid to my outside bins today and quickly closed the lids in case it was something to do with that. And they're in the kitchen despite a deep bleach clean today

TheDuchessOfMN · 16/09/2021 20:11

They especially like to congregate around my glass of wine Envy
