First time post. Need urgent advice before I loose my mind and it's very outing to!
Ds is very poorly and has a 1;1 at school, one for morning one in afternoon
I'm fighting a loosing battle to get him to a special school as school he's in can't look after him properly but that's another story

At the beginning of the week he fell (he's wobbly) and banged his head- had a little tiny lump and brooze. Used to this so thought nothing of it
Today my dd was having issues going the toilet so my friend tried to take ds to school as we was going to be late. He didn't want to go so that's fine il take them together (my friends seen him) and so did the lady in reception as she walked him to class

So when I pick him up at lunch - doctors appointment- he has a hugeeeeeee egg on his head!!! I was like wow, jaw hit the floor when I seen him an so did the receptionist she agreed it wasn't their this morning. 1;1 said she hasn't had his eyes off him all day and he hasn't banged it

So my question is - can the swelling of a bump happen so quickly in the space of 2.5 hours so long after it happening originally ??? I can add pictures but need advice before I loose my shit if im honest, I'm in bits and at my whits end with the school.

Did you ask the doctor at the appointment? He or she would be best placed to comment.

He just said it looked fine. I didn't ask at the time as I had my baby with me an they was restless as we waited over 40mins and I totally forgot to question it.

I think your priority needs to be getting him checked over. Ring the NHS helpline or take him to A&E.
You don't know if this is the original injury or if he's banged it again.

User135792468 · 15/09/2021 20:34

Is your ds verbal? Does he know what happened?

Could he have banged it on the edge of the desk when bending down to get something or hit it on the toilet door as he was opening it inwards? (May sound odd but I’ve had kids do both). In those scenarios, maybe the 1:1 didn’t notice.

I’ve never heard of a bump swelling days after the event unless it’s been knocked again.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 15/09/2021 20:36

Id say A and E

Mymapuddlington · 15/09/2021 20:36

You have every right to request a special school, does he have an ehcp?
Ask for an early review, tell school about your concerns and whether they are meeting needs. Be ready to say they can’t meet needs because of this incident as well as whatever else.
Does he have learning difficulties?
My son is severely autistic but bloody clever. Mainstream can’t meet his emotional/behavioural/communication needs, special school can’t meet his educational needs. He’s spent most of the last 10 years excluded and I’ve been fighting for a school place. Good luck xx

Evesgarden · 15/09/2021 20:38

He has either fell again to day

Or

the bump yesterday may have been harder than thought and he actually had internal swelling which has come out today - in which you need to go to A&E to check he hasn't fractured his skull.

Hope he is ok OP

They forgot to review the ehcp before summer !! So Iv now requested a meeting face to face next week. (Iv had to organise and invite the relevant people though) He isn't verbal enough to tell me what happens. He's very little Speach in that respect he doesn't understand x

Deffo A&E.

Also fire an email off to school asking more questions. No accusing just something along the lines of ' please could you investigate any possible causes of the large bump on my son's head that was apparent when I picked him up this morning, as it wasn't there when he was dropped off' I need to know to give an accurate history to the doctors.'

chocolatethunder · 15/09/2021 20:48

He's under a special team at a hospital about an hour away so I'm going to get my dd in school end take him straight their when our nurse is their and knows about him etc we're other people wouldn't ( we see her every 2 weeks!)

He has been seen by a doctor today who isn't concerned by it with how it feels an how my ds is in himself as he is fine but I want to know why it looks so shocking from when I took him and the 2.5 hours he attended school today to come out with pretty much a mountain on his head and their certain he hasn't banged it again but he very clearly has imo but wanted advice if I a swelling can happen after the initial injury before I go into the school. I have photos that it wasnt their this morning

Well I'm not on good terms with this school atm so I'm going to ask my nurse to ring an say it an hopefully with her asking she may get an answer we're as I didn't ! Just laughed it off pretty much

I would seek medical advice now if you can.
I see a lot of bumped heads and actually a lot do look worse a few hours later or come out much more after a child has got home, but i am not sure about several days later.

CommanderBurnham · 15/09/2021 20:51

You need a doctor's opinion as to whether a swelling can be delayed that way.

Does your son remember falling over or hurting his head while at school this morning?

As I said ask school to investigate it further.

CyclingIsNotOuting · 15/09/2021 20:52

My DD whacked her head on the edge of a kitchen counter.
The (massive) lump came out immediately.
Took her to A&E as it was the first time she’d done something like this and I was shitting myself.
She was absolutely fine but they said the huge swelling was a good sign as it was external. The bruise took a couple of days to come out after the injury. The lump came first.
I’d also suggest it happened today.

Neonplant · 15/09/2021 20:53

So are you concerned it could be from yesterday and have become worse? Or he's banged it and the 1 to 1 hasn't noticed it?

Either way in the first instance you need to make sure he's OK. Can he tell you what happened? I'd call 111.

Then I think a meeting with the school is needed as you've eluded to there are issues. But it feels like they are possibly not managing to keep him safe.

In view of this I’d also ask for a copy of the accident report from the initial injury. That will give you a better idea of how serious it was.
Mymapuddlington · 15/09/2021 20:54

Are they supporting communication and speech and language needs?
Are they supporting him with physiotherapist and physical needs?
Are they supporting any other difficulties he might have?
At the meeting tell the school they’re clearly not meeting his needs and you would appreciate them supporting your application to a special school.

Do you have a case worker at the local authority?
Ask them to consult with the special schools of your choice as soon as ehcp is finalised. Try to get special school as a named school on ehcp.

chocolatethunder · 15/09/2021 20:57

School are saying their hadn't been an accident as she was watching him the whole time. But the bump was a blue colour when he went in and he's come out snd it's literally black and like a golf ball.
He is prone to falling so if they said he fell again. That's fine it happens with him but to say he hasn't an he's come home 10c worse I'm just Speach less?
I want to know if he has hit it and how because he has for it to be the way it is now

Medical advice has been taken snd he has been seen but going to our nurse and doctor tomorrow for their opinion

Their not meeting any of his needs. They've admitted that in March when we had a zoom meeting witj the relevant people when I said I wanted to move schools The school I wanted was in the zoom to, told us how to move things forward and school "forgot" and the coordinator said I didn't make it clear I wanted him to move

This was the whole point in the zoom and I'm so glad my nurse was with me on it as she has since got involved and is now in person joining the WHCP review as he is desperate to move.

We have the best nurse ever I cannot lie

Photo would be helpful to determine age of bruise
