Does anyone else drink most evenings?

I do. Wine usually, a couple of glasses. It's how I unwind. I do skip some nights. I know it's not great for you but everyone has their vices. It helps me cope and feel happier and more able to 'do' life.

Funnily enough, a had a long-term condition review with a clinician yesterday. She wasn't the least bit concerned about my wine drinking.

They're more concerned these days about binge drinking, and drugs (illicit and prescribed) apparently.

altiara · 15/09/2021 19:50

No I don’t.

UnsuitableHat · 15/09/2021 19:58

Yeah I drink most days. I'd like to cut down, especially on wine.

Beautiful3 · 15/09/2021 19:59

No I don't drink, unless it's Christmas. I grew up with a father who drank a couple every night. I never sanitary as a problem until it started to affect them financially e.g. I couldn't get new shoes and had to wear my brothers that were double my size. He would get angry if he didn't drink one night. I realised that the comforting habit, grew into an addiction. It wasn't pleasant to see. I rarely drink because of it. I think if you want to drink, then save it for the weekend.

Coffeepot72 · 15/09/2021 20:00

I used to drink most nights. I love the warm fuzzy feeling from a few glasses of wine, and it makes me sleep better. Then I added up all the units and nearly had a heart attack. So now it’s just a weekend habit.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 15/09/2021 20:00

I do, I occasionally go a week with no drinking, sometimes it’s every day. Sometimes just at the weekend! It does depend.
Otherwise I’m healthy, I run most days, play netball for a team, have a good diet, BMi is 21, good blood pressure etc
The units thing is mostly a guess, from what I’ve read!

Entschuldigung · 15/09/2021 20:01

I used to. At least half a bottle of wine every night. I knew it wasn't a healthy relationship for me though so I stopped. It will be 7 years in January. I haven't touched a drop since then.

Blankspace4 · 15/09/2021 20:03

Yep. I do. Helps me unwind although I am conscious to have 1 or 2 alcohol free days a week. Usually only 1-2 glasses but might go crazy and have 3 on a Friday

TwinsandTrifle · 15/09/2021 20:04

Yes, I'll have a G&T or a something and coke every night, at some point once DTwins are down for the night. I think it's perfectly normal. I'm a creature of habit. Tea in the morning. Afternoons are for Ribena (hot in the winter). In the evening I'll have two (lidls low strength) Malibu and coke, or one glass of wine, or two (lidls low strength) gin liqueur with tonic. I definitely don't have a drink problem, hence I buy the Lidl versions of things that are a really low %age compared to proper Malibu and Gin. I also can't have more than one glass of wine or I feel tipsy and groggy the next day. I just enjoy one wine or two mixers as the start of my adult evening.

I've had my two low alcohol Malibu's tonight, and will take a cup of tea up with me when I go to bed.

I have only been like this for the last few years, prior to that I barely had anything from month to month and would think someone like myself was an alcoholic.

category12 · 15/09/2021 20:04

How many units do you actually drink every week?

Chewbecca · 15/09/2021 20:04

I used to have (& enjoy) a glass every day but stopped on Mondays and sometimes Tuesdays too if I can, purely because I felt I should give my body some time off.

DiaryofWimpyMumm · 15/09/2021 20:04

No I don't drink at all. I've had some gin and lemonades in the fridge since lockdown, still to drink them

Mistymountain · 15/09/2021 20:05

I do, I have two 125 ml glasses most nights with dinner. I like wine with my meal and have no intention of changing!

SmellyOldOwls · 15/09/2021 20:06

If I had lots of money to spend on wine and didn't have to get up for the school run I would happily have a large glass or two most nights!

userxx · 15/09/2021 20:06

Well done. That's brilliant 👍

I've reigned in my drinking recently, it was time to change my ways. I'll drink if I'm going out but no more boozing at home for no reason.

Drybird2020 · 15/09/2021 20:07

@Lanique

Don't ever ask on here op. You'll be diagnosed as an alcoholic as all the tee totallers fall over themselves to tell you.
It was threads like this that helped me to see how dysfunctional my drinking was. I'm now happily alcohol free and life is better in every way.

Daily drinking is normalised and accepted in our culture but that doesn't make it good for you. If you need to drink to unwind or 'do life better' it is definitely worth thinking about why that is. If you need to start a thread about it, I'd suggest that it's because on some level you're not happy with your booze consumption.

MissCruellaDeVil · 15/09/2021 20:07

I have recently, the other day I drank so much I had to get a taxi into work the next morning, had to make an excuse up that my car had gone for a service and that's why it wasn't in the car park! I'm going to do sober october in a hope to cut down.

Viviennemary · 15/09/2021 20:07

No I hardly ever drink. Once a month or so. Sometimes less. Don't keep any drink in the house if you want to cut down.

Fordian · 15/09/2021 20:08

I admit I read and replied, 88 messages in...!

This is not to excuse or give license to any behaviours, but '14 units' is totally made up. There is all but no science behind it; it's a 'stab in the dark' number.

lannistunut · 15/09/2021 20:08

I used to. I stopped, because it isn't good.

SandraOhh · 15/09/2021 20:08

Thanks for all the responses. Units wise I can drink anything from 2 - 16 I'd say per week. I can certainly go several evenings without drinking. I just prefer not to.

And yet someone sticks a thread on MN about doing coke and a load of posters are just doing the shrugging and 'so what?' routine.

Lightfish · 15/09/2021 20:10

Yes, water. Don't drink anything else.

Have never felt the need to unwind by drinking alcohol.

Sounds like you are self-medicating, which isn't healthy. But I think people know this if they are doing it. I certainly knew when I was doing it!
soughsigh · 15/09/2021 20:11

It's above the recommended limit... but who does everything to the recommended limit?

I could quite easily have a glass of wine every night, but try and keep it to one small glass every weekend night (Fri-Sun) so one bottle a week.

Not at the moment becauce I'm currently pregnant though.
