not to beleve in all these jobs

Supposedly there are thousands and thousands of vacancies, but if you actually look, most are agencies. You don't so much apply for a vacancy as get lured in to sign up for an agency. They might or might not then put your name forward for something, and it might not be suitable if they do.

And most of the jobs that are not actually just imaginary fronts to help an agency get your details on file, require ownership of a vehicle.

AIBU to believe that there are actually far far fewer vacancies than the news headline figures are suggesting.

I would guess 10-20% at most

I work in logistics and we are really struggling to recruit in all areas. We have agency staff plugging the gaps who may go temp to perm if any good

Tooembarrassingtomention · 17/09/2021 07:20

I did an detailed analysis of our local town about 8 weeks ago. As people describe lots of signs in windows and advertised. we are tourist town and I` looked at about 150 businesses.

NO full time permanent jobs in hospitality /retail at all except Chefs which are notoriously badly paid as salaried and expected to do long hours often taking them below the minimum wage and apprenticeships (apprentice cleaner in a hotel at £320 a month for a 40 hour week anyone?)

So of course everyones children have stepped into roles. They advertise for zero hours or 12 hours a week- you may end up doing more but that isnt guaranteed and is no good for people who need fixed hours for childcare. It is cheaper to recruit a 16 year old than a 23 year old. £4.62 an hour as opposed to £8.91.

We need to make zero hours contracts illegal. We need to not have a minimum wage determined by age but a living wage for all.

Try being a 30 year old who has to pay for childcare each week and needs set hours and certainty. The pot of jobs is much smaller.

I’ve never seen so many jobs advertised in my sector. I’ve never been approached so much directly on LinkedIn for decent, relevant jobs. Half of my friends have just got new, better jobs.

So YABU

WhileMyMeringueGentlyWeeps · 17/09/2021 07:26

I know of three people trying to find work and not getting anywhere. One works in journalism but has applied for anything from warehouse work to teaching assistant and gets nowhere.
One in advertising and there are no roles going
One graduate in English Lit again finding roles scarce. They are volunteering in a charity shop.
The company I work for has just recruited three staff all on low hours contracts but expected to fill in with overtime. The wage has not gone up.

Winebefore5 · 17/09/2021 07:27

Over 5k full times jobs advertised on indeed for the Glasgow area, closer to 10k once you remove the “full time” filter.
Lots of businesses in my wee town have adverts up, construction companies need more tradesmen, social care is ridiculously under staffed across all areas.

Lots of jobs going, some people just don’t want to work.

Crinkle77 · 17/09/2021 07:28

@anon12345678901

But many jobs don't want casual workers there for a few weeks, it takes time to train people. Why couldn't they get taxis back if doing pub work? There are jobs out there.
Taxi's for minimum wage jobs? That would probably swallow up most of their wages especially if they're under 25 and on the lower NMW rates.
MolkosTeenageAngst · 17/09/2021 07:32

Well obviously it depends on where you live.

Nationally there are lots of jobs available, my workplace (residential school for children with SEN) are constantly hiring as we seem to lose staff quicker than we can replace them. We certainly have several vacancies at the moment as a lot of staff left at the end of the last school year to go to uni/ other higher education and we haven’t managed to fill all of their vacancies prior to September.

Just because there are a lot of jobs available nationally though doesn’t necessarily mean every area in the UK will have plenty of available jobs for unskilled workers or those who don’t drive. The job market varies a lot between different cities/ towns and rural areas. If people are willing to move areas or have a long commute there will be jobs available but for those who can’t or won’t move/ travel to work then the national job market is irrelevant as getting a job will depend solely on the local job market.

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/09/2021 07:33

If you want a service industry job there are so many vacancies you will be spoilt for choice. I see places limiting their hours or service all the time because of a lack of staff.

I see plenty of other jobs too, I don't look on agencies websites so I don't know what they show. Where my husband works they are finding it hard to fill some vacancies, these are well paid jobs too.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/09/2021 07:33

plenty of care work and pub jobs

honestly?

£4.62 -£9.91 a shift. Generally short shifts of 4-6 hours

Of course a taxi is not a viable option.
I think some people live a an ivory tower.

Tooembarrassingtomention · 17/09/2021 07:34

@MrsLargeEmbodied

plenty of care work and pub jobs
Full time? Hours when childcare is available?

Or part -time and split shifts?

TheWeatherWitch · 17/09/2021 07:36

The country is desperate for HGV drivers, it’s been on the news. Loads of shops, bars and restaurants around here with adverts in their windows. Some for multiple jobs.

A combination of brexit and Covid have left the country with more jobs than people willing to fill them.

Op seems to be asking a question but unwilling to hear any different opinions.

lannistunut · 17/09/2021 07:37

@MrsLargeEmbodied

plenty of care work and pub jobs
Yes, the jobs that were often filled with EU labour, because we don't have the volume of young people willing to forego university to do this work permanently.

But don't worry, when they cut university numbers we will have more desperate young people I suppose. Brexit = more shit jobs for Brits.

daisybrown37 · 17/09/2021 07:37

I have known agencies to advertise a real vacancy, but without permission from the company - it happened to us. One of the agencies we did work with spotted it - it was so obviously our role but it was not an agency we had ever worked with!

IndiaMay · 17/09/2021 07:38

I work for a professional services firm. We need qualified staff at all levels as well as admin staff, particularly in the post room. Off the top of my head I know our local vets is recruiting as they are only taking major emergencies as so short staffed.

ComDummings · 17/09/2021 07:38

The jobs available are shit, minimum wage and need you to be available between 6am and 10pm - no set shift pattern so basically a zero hours contract. People saying ‘work in pubs get a taxi’ are nuts, a taxi would cost as much as 2 hours wages in many areas in the middle of the night if they’re available at all.

Sparechange · 17/09/2021 07:43

DH runs an engineering and construction company and they have hundreds of vacancies
They’ve raised the pay, and unqualified new starters are now on £500/week but they are still struggling to find people to fill roles
Which in turn affects how much work they can do, which in turn affects those higher up the career ladder

It’s a massive stress for the company, and all their competitors

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/09/2021 07:44

where i live the care jobs afaik were not affected by brexit,
they have always found the positions hard to fill

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/09/2021 07:44

kids have gone back to uni and their part time jobs need filling.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/09/2021 07:45

there are care companies that are amenable to whatever you can offer.

earlydoors42 · 17/09/2021 07:48

I just looked on Indeed. Quite a lot of jobs near me but they all seem to say things like "flexibility is key" and one even said "you must be fully flexible to work any hours between 6am and 8pm Monday to Sunday".

HalzTangz · 17/09/2021 07:51

Most companies use agencies and recruiters to advertise the jobs they have. I don't believe the jobs you are seeing are fake jobs just to get you to sign up, but yes you would need to be on their books for them to put you forward. The company then decides from the CVs who they will call in for interview.
If you get selected for interview and get the job the recruiter gets a commission.

It doesn't pay for the recruiter to not pass on your application

Ducksarenotmyfriends · 17/09/2021 07:52

@bunnybuggs

Furlough should end by the end of September - it is insane it has gone one this long - and the pool of people needing work should expand but it remains to be seen whether those with the right skills are available. Our benefit system is too generous to some and it does not encourage people to take up jobs that make them even slightly better off. Some people have become lazy through being protected from the realities of having to go to work to earn a living. It becomes a habit to sit at home and get money without any effort.
Poverty is far more complex than the simple right-wing rhetoric of 'people are lazy'. Try actually speaking to people, maybe volunteer at a food bank, then see if you really think 'benefits are too generous'.

You know most people who receive benefits are in work?

MitheringMytryl · 17/09/2021 08:00

I'm in small town Australia and I have also noticed a load of hospitality/retail type jobs pop up. It seems they are desperate for people.

ChrissyPlummer · 17/09/2021 08:03

Everyone knows that care work is notorious for being under-paid, terrible hours and if you have to travel between clients then you don’t get paid for that. It’s a job that I couldn’t physically do due to an injury; same with retail hospitality and cleaning, I struggle to lift/carry and with repetitive tasks.

Retail and hospitality are also known for awful working conditions and pay. Huge shortage of HGV drivers, my friend has been stressed over this, as her company depend on them. There was an interview with the head of the Road Hauliers Association on local radio a few weeks ago; he told the presenter that to do the training for both licenses (HGV and something I’ve forgotten), it costs around £8k, which the trainee has to pay themselves. Not a lot of people have that sort of money sat around.

Thankfully, I don’t need to look now as I have a job I’m happy with. I dread to think what I’d do if I did need a new job though.
