Perfumes for inducing a vomitty rage

In response to this lovely thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/4336303-Perfumes-of-your-life?pg=4 AIBU to suggest we get some lists of perfume that send you into a head-achy verge of vomiting rage? I’ll start with one I had to sit next to for a 5 hour stretch recently - Youth Dew 🤢. Also disliked by my mother, I’m still getting flash backs now.

Also I’ll add Lulu 🤮. Someone used to wear loads of it at work. I could barely keep my breakfast down when I walked in first thing.

@1ittlegreen

Jean Paul Gautier - that stripey blue and white bottle in the shape of a man's torso. Yuck. Just horrible.

Angel, obviously.

Wanted by Azzuro I think....really antiseptic.

Rive Gauche. My reception teacher wore it accompanied by scholl lace up comfy sandals. Just so sweet and sickly.

Exclamation - really cheap and nasty smelling.

I love Frangipane by Chantecaille (have a spelled it correctly?) and Santal 33. Also love the old Vanilla scent from Bodyshop and the Sandalwood one. Dewberry was a bit sickly but those perfume oil bottles fitted in your blazer and could hide the smell of cigs so win, win.

The old Frangipane by Chantecaille was lovely new one not so much. I stupidly sold the old version a few years ago on eBay and for not as much as it should’ve made either!

Poison, Chloe, Opium, anything by Marc Jacobs.
Most perfumes make me wheeze, but the above make me want to run away, or shot the person and he bottle!

PollyPepper · 17/09/2021 10:06

So many saying Angel, and I don't disagree, but what about the other one Womanity by Thierry Mugler did? I think it got discontinued pretty sharpish because I haven't seen it for years but fuck me it was horrific. Like a salty fish 🤢

TheRebelle · 17/09/2021 10:08

Perhaps a perfume wearer can explain this to me, there are obviously many perfumes you don’t like as well as those you do, does it ever occur to you that other people don’t want to breathe in your perfume when you’re putting it on to go and sit in an office for 7 hours or to the gym or do you just think it’s not that strong?

Faunanflora · 17/09/2021 10:13

Heavy vanilla toned perfumes. I was once on a bus (decades ago) when a women sat in front of me who smelled like she was wearing concentrated vanilla essence. The smell nauseated me even before she took more perfume out of her bag and dabbed it behind her ears. I suddenly vomited and as the bus was full, managed to spatter 3 or 4 people, including the perfume wearer. Vanilla smells still makes me feel ill even now.

PollyPepper · 17/09/2021 10:13

Does anyone also remember in the 90's that God awful Impulse crap? There was one the Spice girls vanilla one that every teen would shower in it and omg Envy

Lucked · 17/09/2021 10:27

I am pretty tolerant of heavy perfumes if applied with a light hand and I like catching wiffs of perfume off people as they walk past.

There are plenty of perfumes I dislike but Youth Dew is the only one where I have had problems with in recent years as I had to sit next to someone wearing it for an entire meal and it ruined my food.

Oversprayers are a massive problem- a room shouldn’t still smell of someone 10mins after they have left but, in my opinion, men are more frequently a guilty of this than women.

I do think the decrease in smokers and the smoking ban has influenced which perfumes people choose.

To be honest - whenever I spray perfumes these days, it's not strong ones, but I spray in the house or before I arrive somewhere (e.g. if out) but only a couple of sprays at my neck and one or two on each wrist.

If stronger perfumes then of course I'm careful as to how much I spray etc.

I do think, and in the past I have been guilty of this, that some people don't realise how strong their perfume/aftershave is, or how much not to spray. I don't think it's unreasonable sometimes, to tell someone if their perfume/aftershave is too strong or too much sprayed on because how otherwise do they know?!

ItsSunnyOutside · 17/09/2021 10:30

Chanel No.5 & Poison, they are so strong and unpleasant.

wink1970 · 17/09/2021 10:34

@AutistGoth I remember that perfume, it was lovely. Tell her she will also like (and I can't believe I'm typing the name) Jennifer Lopez's DESEO. Smells like a warm beach with a bit of med garden.

  • to the Angel hate list.

Most perfumes have me either gagging or feeling headachy. Technically, they are a form of pollution, releasing unwanted gases into the atmosphere. I really hate it at many airports where all travellers are forced to walk through the perfume area in the gift shop to get from Security to the gates. I hold my breath and run through, preferring to risk passing out beyond the shop rather than to inhale the obnoxious cocktail of chemicals and cat urine that many scents are made from.
I've even been sprayed directly into my eyes by customers (and sales staff) carelessly testing the products. Stung like hell. Also, in the days of department stores (and yes I know they still exist), often entrance and exit would be through the perfumes section too. A nightmare for people like me with strong physiological aversion to strong artificial aromas.
Personally I prefer the smell of human sweat, natural as it is.
So perhaps the person who wrote the original thread should catalogue different natural human fragrances from their life experiences too.

CounsellorTroi · 17/09/2021 13:01

I don’t really like perfume either. Scented body lotion is more subtle.

Lockheart · 17/09/2021 13:23

I must be strange, I can't think of any that make me "gag" "heave" or suffer any of the other amateur dramatics that clearly afflict so many.

There are certainly ones I don't like, but that's not really the same.

LindaLooky · 17/09/2021 13:26

Angel. I was given some and ended up with a migraine and being physically sick. It's so strong and overpowering. Not a fan.

BillywigSting · 17/09/2021 13:30

Alien makes me feel really nauseous

And aftershave rather than perfume but diesel only the brave, especially when dp drowns himself in it at half six in the morning so our tiny bathroom reeks of when I need a wee after getting out of bed 😑

I really don't know how it works, my daughter wears Alien and Armani code, and they smell fine on her, but the smell of them, if I spray them on me, is horrible, even before they have a chance to interact with my skin chemistry
I love the smell of plants such as honeysuckle or jasmine in the garden of an evening, but jasmine in perfume turns my stomach, some perfumes I like hav a tiny bit in and that's ok, I once took someone a honeysuckle plant and had it next to me in the car for an hour or so and I nearly threw up, somehow it changed or maybe there is only so much you can take of it before whatever it is that sets off the vomit feeling tips the balance. Am OK with lilies though, I know some don't like hevy lily scent

garrybubblo · 17/09/2021 14:15

Oh my goodness ! A few of these I like hahaha. Karl Lagergeld sun, moon and Stars I loved. CK Eternity, I still love. Issey Myake is also a classic loved one and I also used to love Jlo Glow GrinI also love Chloe !

As for the ones I loathe :

Angel
Jean Paul Gautier the one shaped like a lady
Chanel 5
Anis Anis
Nina Ricci Apple or whatever it's called, GROSS
Miss Cherie Dior
Gucci bloom ( too powdery somehow )

My absolute LOVES, which probably people dislike:

Crystal Noir by Versace
Chloe

Whenever I wear those, people tell me I smell nice !

Thisisnotreallymyname · 17/09/2021 14:36

Pagan ( by Picot )
Very popular years ago.

mamabear715 · 17/09/2021 14:43

Ooh, I'd forgotten Pagan! And Aqua Manda! ;-)

SocksAndTheCity · 17/09/2021 14:44

I still quite like patchouli oil, and even Angel in very small doses Grin

The much revered Santal 33 made me feel so ill I had to go and have a shower to get it off, and it took two washes to get the smell out of the dress I had on (and I'm not convinced it's gone now).

I bought it because it smelled amazing on my friend; sadly, on me it was rotting celery and pissed beds 🤮

Bluesheep8 · 17/09/2021 15:25

I'm strange aswell then! When I read some of the reactions I keep wondering if the perfume the poster is having such an extreme reaction to is going to be called Eau du Sistene Chapel 🤣

listsandbudgets · 17/09/2021 15:33

Poison - it's awful - still I suppose I should have been warned by the name. was very glad to get home and wash the tester squirt off. Vile concoction.

Buggersticks · 17/09/2021 15:40

Rive Gauche & Poison come to mind instantly. We all have different smelling skin and oils naturally, so what smells awful on one smells lovely on another. A colleague used to wear Clinique Elixir, it smelled absolutely DIVINE so I got some, I completely hate it in me, it smells terrible.
