Perfumes for inducing a vomitty rage

In response to this lovely thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/4336303-Perfumes-of-your-life?pg=4 AIBU to suggest we get some lists of perfume that send you into a head-achy verge of vomiting rage? I’ll start with one I had to sit next to for a 5 hour stretch recently - Youth Dew 🤢. Also disliked by my mother, I’m still getting flash backs now.

Also I’ll add Lulu 🤮. Someone used to wear loads of it at work. I could barely keep my breakfast down when I walked in first thing.

Paris
Patchouli oil
Charlie
🤢🤢🤢

Honeyroar · 16/09/2021 20:53

Angel. It makes me retch. I had to sit next to someone on a bus for 2 hours who was wearing it. I thought I was going to be ill, I felt travel sick. I’ve not been able to stomach it since

Dramaqueenbee · 16/09/2021 20:54

Red Door, Aromatics Elixir, Chloe Narcisse

RVN123 · 16/09/2021 21:02

Chanel no 5 smells like a nursing home. Revolting, dusty, ancient tomb smell.

Angel. Weirdly, the only time I wore that (sold it after the first use) someone commented on how nice I smelled! I hated it. Far too sweet.

My current favourite is on the hated list so I will not disclose it but I love it! Perfumes definitely smell different on different people.

1ittlegreen · 16/09/2021 21:05

Jean Paul Gautier - that stripey blue and white bottle in the shape of a man's torso. Yuck. Just horrible.

Angel, obviously.

Wanted by Azzuro I think....really antiseptic.

Rive Gauche. My reception teacher wore it accompanied by scholl lace up comfy sandals. Just so sweet and sickly.

Exclamation - really cheap and nasty smelling.

I love Frangipane by Chantecaille (have a spelled it correctly?) and Santal 33. Also love the old Vanilla scent from Bodyshop and the Sandalwood one. Dewberry was a bit sickly but those perfume oil bottles fitted in your blazer and could hide the smell of cigs so win, win.

TheWitchCirce · 16/09/2021 21:13

Poison's a funny one. MN hates it - but when I occasionally wear it for a bit of late 80s nostalgia - men go mad for it! Maybe it reminds them all of their first girlfriend 😆

Thelnebriati · 16/09/2021 21:19

White musk that has gone off is the worst smell ever invented.

browneyes77 · 16/09/2021 21:20

Eden by Cacharel.

My friend and I had it sprayed on us in a department store when we were teens (many moons ago now!) and it made both of us feel physically sick the entire bus journey home. Seemed to take an age to scrub the smell off!

30 years later and I still can’t abide the smell of it.

Also, never have liked Chanel No5 either.

browneyes77 · 16/09/2021 21:24

@Mylittlecoconuts

CK One Calvin Klein Eternity

Both give me migraine.

I really don't like Calvin Klein perfumes.

Ah you’ve just reminded me that I hate CK Eternity too!
RainbowToes · 16/09/2021 21:24

The smell coming out of the Lush shop used to make me feel sick and give me a headache. Hold my nose if I need to go past now.

TheOnlyMrsM · 16/09/2021 21:28

I am nodding along to you, @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius !

valleyplaza · 16/09/2021 21:33

Chanel no 5 . I can't even hazard a guess at how many times my Dad had to pull over the car to let me puke because of my Mam insisted on wearing it

browneyes77 · 16/09/2021 21:39

Same here!!

A pp mentioned whether personal tastes and perceptions change and several pps have mentioned perfume and cigarette smoke. I used to wear and love - yonks ago, I hasten to add - Poison, Obsession, CK1/Eternity/Contradiction, Sunflowers, Rive Gauche, Opium, Aromatics/Elixir, L' Air Du Temps, Chloe, even Patchouli - the list goes on. Please note, used to wear. Now I wear nothing at all.Wink

I remember lifting the lid of the laundry basket - Ali Baba, I think - and being hit by the combination of my Poison and my then partner's cigarette smoke. I nearly married him, dear reader. He occasionally smoked, but I knew then in the nasal torture of that moment, that I had to give him his marching orders,

Supergirl1958 · 16/09/2021 21:44

Calvin Klein eternity!! It used to make me really ill! We’d share the back of a car with my dads cousin who seemed to bath in the stuff and it used to make me throw up!!

HarrietsweetHarriet · 16/09/2021 22:07

Most perfumes set off a migraine and nausea for me. Luckily DH is not a fan of aftershave and DD knows not to use it around me especially if we're going in the car. I can't bear the heavy ones like Opium or Poison although I remember loving my sister's Rive Gauche in the 80s. I do like a few which don't bring on the sickness symptoms but they tend to be the ones I can't afford like Jo Malone , Diptyque and Penhaligon’s. Maybe it has something to do with chemicals used in the cheaper ranges...I don't know. I can cope with a tiny dab of No.5 as it reminds me of my mum.

Perky1 · 16/09/2021 22:14

Just found 2 bottles of Channel no 5 on my dressing table 😁

justasking111 · 16/09/2021 22:26

Channel no 5 and rive gauche changed the ingredients. I think saving money using chemicals maybe behind a lot of today's intolerances to perfumes

thatsforsure · 16/09/2021 22:31

Tommy Hilfiger aftershave - my husband wore it when i was pregnant and the smell just takes me back to morning sickness

LeSquigh · 16/09/2021 22:35

Another Angel hater here - I wanted to love it because of the beautiful bottle and I really tried but no. I can’t bear it when I smell it on other people.

Probably a less popular dislike for me is Eau Sauvage - people seem to love it but I think it smells like sage and onion Paxo.

Peraltiago · 16/09/2021 22:37

Don't think they make it any more, but Christan Dior La Dolce Vita. I had a bottle of it in the late 90s and wore it to do jury service. I don't know if it was the stress, or I put too much on, but it gave me the worst nauseous migraine ever, and I was stuck in a courtroom and couldn't leave to wash it off! I had to chuck the bottle out after that, it was never going to get worn again...

PrincessSD · 16/09/2021 22:46

I remember my mother-in-law coming to see our daughter for the first time when she was a few days old. The smell of Youth Dew was overpowering and I was horrified that my little girl stank of it so badly where MIL had held her - I had to bath my daughter and wash her hair to get rid of the smell of it from her.
When I was pregnant with my son the smell of it would make me heave and I had to ask her not to wear it around me as I was in danger of being sick.

DumbestBlonde · 16/09/2021 22:47

Unstoppables.

Please stop them...... they should be outlawed.

As for actual fragrances - such memories from the YSL ones - Opium, Rive Gauche, Paris. I wouldn't wear them now.

Had a Chanel phase - Coco, and Mademoiselle, Chance (eau tendre) and (still love) Allure Sensuelle (but not actual Allure). Definitely don't like the Numbers, or Gabrielle. Tried to like one or two Geurlain and Lancome but nope - too strong, even though -

Now to Dior - but only Joy and the Intense version (hate J'Adore) Nothing else - and so so happy that no-one has a hate-on for them.

CoachBeard · 16/09/2021 22:48

Poison makes me feel properly sick as does Angel. Is Alien the one that smells like over ripe melon? That’s grim too.
My Mum used to wear Je Reviens and I loathed it but she died a few months ago and I took one of her bottles just to sniff occasionally.
Years ago I wore Ô de Lancôme but smelled it again recently and it’s not nice at all.
My MIL wears J Lo Glow which smells very cheap and nasty but better than whatever she wore before that which smelled exactly like Raid Fly Spray. 😂
Oh and when I was pregnant and suffering terribly with morning sickness I worked with a lass that practically bathed in Ralph by Ralph Lauren and I had to actually beg her to stop wearing it because the slightest whiff triggered massive vomiting.

Herecomesthesun70 · 16/09/2021 23:15

@Dearreader

As someone who spent my youth around the heavy metal crowd, I would like to offer you the incomparable patchouli oil. Horrific. Those incense sticks that burn in shops selling healing crystals also make me feel ill.
Ha I used to love that. All the blokes in the local rock pub reeked of it. I threw a bottle around my bedroom and stained everything. My mum was not amused. Off I go to the BS tomorrow for a sniff
