car parked outside my house for weeks

I know I know, there's nothing that can be done, it's a so-called public road, although it's a very small little cul de sac estate. It's right outside my house, where I would park. There are 3 spaces. this car is in the one nearest to me. I live beside a school so it's manic twice a day and I often cant get a space when I get back from dropping ds so end up parking round the corner then moving my car when it calms down again. He's taking up a precious space for school mums too. Just having a moan I suppose. I checked and it is taxed so police wont do anything. I just wouldnt have the nerve to park right outside someone's house for weeks on end. Apparently he lives round the corner and it's been going on for years. Different neighbours have asked him not to but he's said h'es not breaking any laws. Trouble is there are only 3 spaces, and the rest of the cul de sac is no parking 8-9.30 and 3-5pm so if you have a workman in, or visitors there's one less spare space for them.

YANBU to feel a bit frustrated, but he INBU in that what he says is right. If it is legal to be on the road and there are no parking restrictions then we can all park where we want.

Onlinedilema · 13/09/2021 22:29

Why doesn't he park on his own street?
I would hate this.
Lots of things aren't illegal but still annoying as hell.

minitwister · 13/09/2021 22:29

We had similar. Call 101/111 (brain not working!) and tell the police you are concerned it's been abandoned. They won't tell you who owns it, but they will try to contact the owner and suggest they move it.

The one opposite our house was gone within the hour.

VimFuego101 · 13/09/2021 22:33

Would be a real shame if someone scattered birdseed on the car so it got birds mess all over it. Maybe it would be a less appealing place to park then.

faelavie · 13/09/2021 22:35

He's right, he isn't breaking any laws and there's nothing you can do about it, but I know it can be frustrating. Just one of life's inconveniences, unfortunately.

I have a garage, but it was built in the 60s, for narrow 60s cars, and my car won't fit in it. I like to park near my house, and I get a little annoyed when I see someone else parked where I'd like to be, as it usually means a walk uphill which I don't really fancy after a long day...... But I wouldn't write any notes to put on their car or anything! It's a pain but they're allowed to be there.

itsutterlyshit · 13/09/2021 22:41

@minitwister no they wouldn't.

The police would check it's taxed, MOT'd and insured and ask OP about where/how it's parked then advise it's not a police matter.
As annoying as it is, the vehicle is parked legally it's just an inconvenience to the residents

Please don't imply that I'm lying. My local police force did exactly as I described when I was oh-so-concerned that a car had been abandoned opposite my house.

Iamthewombat · 13/09/2021 22:56

So he knows that he’s annoying your neighbours by parking outside your house (and never moving the car…what’s the point of having it?) but doesn’t care? He wouldn’t be surprised if the car was damaged then? He must know that that is a risk.

Holskey · 13/09/2021 23:05

Yanbu to find this annoying, and even knowing that I am fully entitled to park outside someone's house for weeks on end, I would still feel embarrassed to do so. I might do it though if the only other alternative was very inconvenient to me, given there is space for you to park, so I guess it depends on car owner's circumstances.

itsutterlyshit · 13/09/2021 23:06

@minitwister it's very strange they did so, they have no powers to tell someone to move a legally parked vehicle because it's annoying a resident.
Your situation may have been described differently than the one in the OP which is why they made the phone call.
I work for the police, if this call made it to me with the information provided in the OP and the vehicle checked out there would be no further action and the call closed.

HotSauceCommittee · 13/09/2021 23:06

Nutella under the door handle vie when he comes back?

Ceci03 · 13/09/2021 23:07

One of the neighbours told me he used to be a car dealer and has quite a few cars and they wont all fit on his driveway - yeah he has a fancy house. So he 'rotates' them. the one that's there now is a regular, he leaves it for about 6 weeks or so. then he moves it and another one appears. Yeah it's just a moan. I know there's nothing I can do. It's just a slap in the face I suppose, like there are 3 spaces, and he's parked in the one right outside my house. At least it's better than the last time when he parked half in the 2nd and half in the 3rd space, so he was basically taking up 2 spaces. (There's double yellow and zig zags that you cant park on)

Ask council for residents parking permits, cost money but at least you get your spaces.

NotStayingIn · 13/09/2021 23:12

I honestly think I would key his car. I know that's terrible!

Rosebel · 13/09/2021 23:19

I know how annoying this is. Most of our residents on our road have drives. In fact we are the only house that doesn't (we rent). We have a garage opposite, a nursery at the bottom of the road and a school at the top.
The garage are by far the worst. They will park a car outside our house for weeks and weeks. We have called the police a few times when the cars are untaxed but even then they take forever to come out.
I have sometimes driven around for 30 minutes as all the roads around here have drives or are jammed with cars because there is so little parking.

Ceci03 · 13/09/2021 23:32

@Rosebel that's funny I rent as well and am the only one without driveway parking. I think what's annoying me is that there are 3 spaces, but he chose to go in the one right outside my house.

TBH I wouldnt have the nerve to do it, but maybe I will now as no-one can do anything. You'd think he would be morto with people asking him not to do it but it doesnt bother him at all.

OP posts:
ChampionOfTheSun · 13/09/2021 23:37

I understand how annoying this is, my road is absolutely awful as most people have two or three cars per household and there's not enough parking for everyone as it is. We live really near the town centre/a short walk to the beach and people just park here for days out or whilst they work. They're entitled to, nothing stopping them, but it is slightly annoying when you do a big shop and have to park 4 roads away and lug all the shopping and a toddler home because someone didn't want to pay £3.50 for a full day's parking at the seafront or in town Blush

Kite22 · 13/09/2021 23:49

Well why should it bother him ? He's not doing anything wrong.

As people have said, "not being able to park outside your own house" is annoying, but a common issue for thousands of folk. It is a pain if you have a lot to carry, or if it is raining or whatever, but it is just one of those annoying things in life that make each of us wish we could afford a house with a drive/ garage / bigger drive, but most people shrug and get on with life, not go around damaging other people's property.

Lockheart · 13/09/2021 23:50

You can't vandalise someone's car just because they're doing something legal which you don't like.

However, this is why I'd be a big advocate of the Japanese proof-of-parking system - in most places, if you don't have somewhere off-road to park your car, you can't have one.

Imagine how much nicer the streets would be!

adeleh · 13/09/2021 23:56

This happened to me earlier in the summer and it really pissed me off. And I was even more pissed off recognising that the law was on his side and that I was unreasonable to moan. You have all my sympathy, OP.
My situation was resolved when the water board made everyone move their cars to dig up the road and he couldn't be arsed to move the car back from its new space.

This. Blimey there are some entitled people on this thread. Want your very own space? Get a house with a drive. And no, I don't have one. I park where I can and accept I will have to as long as I live here.
toconclude · 14/09/2021 01:38

@Lockheart
Yes, let's make car ownership the privilege of rich people even more than it is now. Nothing keeps the plebs in their place like being restricted to jobs they have to get to by public transport ( if there is any). But hey, you get nice streets so fuck 'em, right?
HmmHmm

Booknooks · 14/09/2021 01:45

He's right, but it is annoying. When we bought our house we were fortunate in that we could afford one with a drive, that isn't the case for everyone and I hate the old bUy A hOuSe WiTh A dRiVe ThEn. When I was doing my degree I'd come back after a night shift and have to park several streets over, the bloke opposite used to park his work van on the street which took up a fair chunk of the road. He did have a driveway and it did fit on, but he used to laugh about how he just couldn't be arsed to reverse it in. Having a drive is a privilege, but it's weird, plenty of things are legal but people get annoyed by them, re parking people take great glee and smugness in declaring people can do what they want.
