car parked outside my house for weeks

I know I know, there's nothing that can be done, it's a so-called public road, although it's a very small little cul de sac estate. It's right outside my house, where I would park. There are 3 spaces. this car is in the one nearest to me. I live beside a school so it's manic twice a day and I often cant get a space when I get back from dropping ds so end up parking round the corner then moving my car when it calms down again. He's taking up a precious space for school mums too. Just having a moan I suppose. I checked and it is taxed so police wont do anything. I just wouldnt have the nerve to park right outside someone's house for weeks on end. Apparently he lives round the corner and it's been going on for years. Different neighbours have asked him not to but he's said h'es not breaking any laws. Trouble is there are only 3 spaces, and the rest of the cul de sac is no parking 8-9.30 and 3-5pm so if you have a workman in, or visitors there's one less spare space for them.

Bird seed on the car, works a treat.

simitra · 14/09/2021 02:00

If something "happened" to the car one dark night it would be very difficult for the owner to prove who had done it and it might teach them to park more considerately.

Rosebel · 14/09/2021 08:01

I don't think anyone is being entitled. It's just annoying when you can't even park on the road where you live.
I assume people saying vandalising the car etc aren't being serious. It's just good to vent sometimes.

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:02

The thing is, I've never lived in a house or apartment with it's own car space, so I'm used to parking on the street. Its never been a problem.

The problem I have with this guy is that he doesnt use the car, he just leaves it sitting there for weeks on end. I mean, before, at least he had the decency to park in the space furthest from my house, but this time it's literally the space outside my house. I 'm not precious or entitled enough to believe that that is "my" space, and if someone else uses it before me, or I cant get into it, no worries. but it's for weeks on end. he never moves the car or uses it. That's the part that bugs me.

I mean, really, how many of you would have the balls to park directly outside a person's house for weeks and weeks? Me, I'd be morto, even if it is 'legal'.

OP posts:
DeepaBeesKit · 14/09/2021 10:06

The only thing you can do is block a space with your own car. So wait for it to be moved, then tuck yours straight into the place.

There's nothing else you can do. If you ring the police they will check the address the vehicle is registered to, when they see it's only round the corner they will do nothing.

DeepaBeesKit · 14/09/2021 10:08

Ceci03 lots of people park outside a different house regularly because there's no space outside their own. Where I used to rent there were 3 flats but only space on the road for one car. My neighbour always got their first, I pretty much always parked outside next door because their stretch of kerb was longer.

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:08

Yeah the neighbours had the idea of trying to block him from doing it. Trouble is we work so we are out during the day, in our cars, so he must nip in when he sees there's nobody there...

I do. I'm not allowed to park on my road for more than 20 mins so I park down the side street. I can easily go a couple of weeks without using my car as I cycle most places. I'm not in the slightest bit mortified, why would I be? It's a public road.

Saying that if he's running a car dealership from his house does he have the correct permission from the council for this?

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:11

@DeepaBeesKit yeah sure, I get that. I used to park 'round the back' of my apartment as my neighbours had 2 cars and as often as not would park outside my apartment as well as their own. I had no problem with that. It was just 'luck of the draw'.

But this is different IMO. He leaves it there for weeks, never moving it. It's not like he's using it every day and then if I'm back first I get the nearest space, or if I'm not, he gets it, or someone who has visitors or workmen in get it, it's no bother, I'm not unreasonable or precious about it lol. My visitors often have to park on another road, we are used to it.

Its the weeks on end, and not ever moving it. It's the 4th week it's there now....

Annoying but not illegal. He has as much right to use that piece of road as a car park as you do. You need to mentally get over the notion that it being located in front of your house connects in some way to that property, it doesnt. It just happens that most people park conveniently for their own property so end up in front of theirs. Its inconvenient for you that this car is there but nothing you can do.

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:15

@CovidCorvid I suppose if it's a busy public road , a 'through road' I wouldnt be so mortified. But this is a teeny estate with only 16 houses. would you really park outside someone's house in that instance and not feel even a little bit mortified? I probably need to grow some balls I guess!!!!!
I used to park on a little road near the station, it was a so-called 'public road' but was a small little estate. I got a note on the car telling me they had noticed me parking there all day and I should stop. I never parked there again. I guess I''m easily intimidated. Problably should have just told them it was a public road so f* off right.

OP posts:
DeepaBeesKit · 14/09/2021 10:16

If its not a private road, it's a public road, no matter what size it is or how many houses are on it.

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:16

@DeepaBeesKit
Yeah I know. I'm just having a moan. I think a lot of people would find it annoying, but yeah, it's legal so I just need to suck it up. I know that.

OP posts:
Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:17

Yep that's true. I suppose I'm just a fair-minded decent person, and personally I would feel uncomfortable and probably wouldnt have the balls to be that brazen about it. But yeah, you're right!

OP posts:
DeepaBeesKit · 14/09/2021 10:20

Don't get me wrong it would annoy me a bit too. Because people who do this are often people who have more cars than needed for a normal property but arent taking into account their need for additional off street parking, instead they overburden the local on-street parking capacity.

Tlollj · 14/09/2021 10:22

I’d be annoyed tbh. Especially as you say it’s literally parked there and he’s not using it. But what can you do? Just have to put up with it.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 14/09/2021 10:24

Birdseed for the win.

leakymcleakleak · 14/09/2021 10:25

Is he still dealing cars or does he just own a lot? I'm just wondering if there are any regulations about running a business from his home, if you could contact the council if that's what he's doing, essentially storing stock on the public road?

MyOtherProfile · 14/09/2021 10:25

I'd call the police and say there's a car that doesn't belong to anyone down your cul de sac and you think it's been abandoned.

LemonLymanDotCom · 14/09/2021 10:26

@Ceci03

I mean, really, how many of you would have the balls to park directly outside a person's house for weeks and weeks? Me, I'd be morto, even if it is 'legal'.
Well I would, and do have the balls, and am not at all 'morto' about it.

I live on an estate where there's not enough parking spots for the number of cars and is unlikely to ever be (there's 3 spaces per 12 flats). Hence I park on the road opposite, in front of SOMEONE ELSE'S HOUSE! I only drive about once a week or so, sometimes much less, so they might well be as narked off about it as you with it parked outside for weeks at a time, but it's not illegal nor unreasonable.

I do hope they're not throwing birdseed on it. That would be a really nasty thing to do.

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 10:29

@LemonLymanDotCom ha ha, yes but the difference is you LIVE in the estate. I'm not sure where this guy lives. Nearby to walk I guess.

OP posts:
Bigtruth · 14/09/2021 10:32

I think this is reasonable to get annoyed about, I do strongly disagree with people suggesting to vandalise the car though, that's disgusting and pretty much exactly what is wrong with society these days.

You could contact the council about getting the whole street turned to permit parking, it's possible they may do so of they received a few requests.

notanothertakeaway · 14/09/2021 10:32

@minitwister

We had similar. Call 101/111 (brain not working!) and tell the police you are concerned it's been abandoned. They won't tell you who owns it, but they will try to contact the owner and suggest they move it.

The one opposite our house was gone within the hour.

If you genuinely thought a car had been abandoned, fair enough to report it to the police

Otherwise, what a waste of their time, when they could have been investigating actual crimes
