car parked outside my house for weeks

I know I know, there's nothing that can be done, it's a so-called public road, although it's a very small little cul de sac estate. It's right outside my house, where I would park. There are 3 spaces. this car is in the one nearest to me. I live beside a school so it's manic twice a day and I often cant get a space when I get back from dropping ds so end up parking round the corner then moving my car when it calms down again. He's taking up a precious space for school mums too. Just having a moan I suppose. I checked and it is taxed so police wont do anything. I just wouldnt have the nerve to park right outside someone's house for weeks on end. Apparently he lives round the corner and it's been going on for years. Different neighbours have asked him not to but he's said h'es not breaking any laws. Trouble is there are only 3 spaces, and the rest of the cul de sac is no parking 8-9.30 and 3-5pm so if you have a workman in, or visitors there's one less spare space for them.

BTW, the last person who keyed my car was caught out as I have a very good dash cam. Plus the person before that was caught out. Also a local shop was very happy to hand over their cctv. Remember a lot of people have ring doorbells now - my neighbour has invisible cctv which captures the road.

Both parties who damaged my car ended up having to pay for it. The last time was over 1k as needed a new bonnet. They only didn't get a criminal record as I agreed not to press charges.

@Ceci03

I mean, really, how many of you would have the balls to park directly outside a person's house for weeks and weeks? Me, I'd be morto, even if it is 'legal'.
I would probably move my car to nearer my own house when the opportunity arose, but maybe not. I have definitely left a car parked on an adjacent street in london for a week, outside someone's house (and, believe it or not I left it unlocked and it was untouched when I went back for it!).

It depends a bit on the area - I'm used to living in places where you're delighted to be 23 metres from your house, and the chances of having the space outside are small.

I used to have two neighbours - one was a right pain and he hated it when anyone parked outside of his house (despite not having a car and only having visitors once a week, visitors who could easily walk from 50 yards away). He had a go at my other neighbour for parking outside his house, and my other neighbours response was "if you don't like the car see how you like it when I leave my company van there" before proceeding to leave his car at work and parking the luton 15 ft from the blokes front window at every opportunity.

I've love to know what sort of vehicle and / or way of parking gets you that much grief!

Mask up kids, stay safe!

CovidCorvid · 14/09/2021 17:49

@laetitiaasd first time was delinquent 12yos who did the whole street. 2nd time was drunk 18yos who jumped on every car bonnet in the street. 🤷‍♀️. My parking wasn't an issue.

Iamthewombat · 14/09/2021 17:50

Yeah are you parking an Aston Martin outside Wetherspoons?

Iamthewombat · 14/09/2021 17:50

Just saw your answer!

lisaandalan · 14/09/2021 17:55

Find out where he lives and you and your neighbours all keep parking outside his house, if you can.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/09/2021 18:43

I didn't say I thought the law should change, but the example of I'm alright I've got a drive way but I don't like cars on the road as it might be a tiny bit more effort for me to get round them isn't the same annoyance as not being able to park near your house. Classic I'm alright Jack.

It works exactly the same the other way, though. People without drives but permitted on-street parking believe that it's theirs - and then, when it comes to people who live on nearby roads with double yellows along the whole length on both sides, the former group also take the 'I'm alright, Jack' attitude - sometimes even blaming the latter group for not buying/renting a house with parking and declaring it 'their own fault' without ever seeing the irony.

We had a similar nobhead where I used to live. He bought a house with a driveway with room for one car and no parking outside his own house as it was an access route. However they moved in with five cars and parked them in front of everyone else’s houses.

So annoying. Id be bouncing it into middle of road or birdseed idea. Every blinking time

I'm so glad that we don't have this kind of anti-social thuggery on my street. It's not posh by any standards, but we get on well and respectfully.

I've heard of these neighbourhoods where certain families think they own the whole place, do whatever they want using violence and/or intimidation and force everybody else to dance to their tune to avoid something 'unpleasant' happening. Horrendous.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/09/2021 18:50

I meant to add to that last one: surely if you're a 'nobhead' for having five cars too many to park on your drive, is the principle the same if you have one or two? Maybe not this chap in particular, but a lot of families use the housing stock much more efficiently, with several working adults in one house - are they to be punished for this?

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 19:43

*I would have no qualms about legally parking in an on-street parking space if I needed to do so. I would not be "morto" about it, why on earth would I?

I would, however, be "morto" about buying or renting a property with insufficient parking for my needs and then expecting other people to inconvenience themselves in order to accommodate my decision to do so. So selfish!

If you want guaranteed parking outside your house, pay for a property with sufficient private parking for your needs. If you do not wish to do this or are unable to, you must accept that you park in the nearest available space, and you do not have any priority whatsoever for the spaces close to your house. To expect to be given priority for public spaces is CFery.*

Is this tongue in cheek? So I'm supposed to be 'morto' cos I didn't rent a property with parking, whereas HE is not at all to be morto for parking his car for weeks on end outside my house? Is that not a bit twisted logic?? Has be a wind up ha ha.

No, absolutely serious.

It is fine to legally park a car on an unrestricted street. No-one has priority, it is simply first come first serve. It is incredibly cheeky to buy a house without adequate parking and then think you have rights to dictate who can park the road outside it, and for how long.

I'm embarrassed for you. Just park elsewhere if the space outside your house is already in use by someone else. But you cannot complain that someone else is parking there (for however long) because you do not own the road or have any priority for parking on it.

Ceci03 · 14/09/2021 21:58

yeah I think some people just like to be obtuse. I don't think anyone would enjoy having a random car parked outside their house for weeks on end. It's months at this stage, if I added it altogether for past 18 mths. Like I said, there are 3 spaces 'free to use', and he's always had the decency to not park directly outside, but this time he has. I appreciate that I don't own the space outside my house. I still think he is a CF for using the one right at my driveway.

Anyway, agree to disagree I guess. Horses for courses and all that

You're right, they wouldn't. And most people wouldn't do it because regardless of the legalities, it's just plain cheeky.

olidora63 · 14/09/2021 22:19

We had exactly same problem. Guy selling cars in our road and taking up valuable parking space! He parked outside our house for 4 months !! I eventually saw him and had a massive go at him. Told him that regardless of the law his actions were selfish and unneighbourly !
He gave me a rather rude reply but did move the car 👏He has never done it again 😬

StoneofDestiny · 14/09/2021 22:24

Of course they wouldn't. I'm sure the person doing it wouldn't either.

I couldn’t care less if that happened to me to be honest. I have much more important things to worry about than what car happens to be parked on the public road outside my house.
PigletJohn · 14/09/2021 23:02

maybe you could get a cheap car with long MoT and park it outside his house.

Maybe more than one?

Scarby9 · 15/09/2021 06:57

My parents live under a mile from a regional airport on a quiet, narrow, residential street.

Pre-Covid, they had a spate of cars being parked for two to three weeks at a time as people went off on holiday. They would arrive, park outside someone's house, unload their luggage then pile into a taxi and disappear. They would often reappear by taxi in the early hours, with lots of door slamming and loud tslking, especially when several cars had come together.
The police confirmed that it was all perfectly legal and could not be stopped, but it was so entitled and thoughtless towards the people who lived there.
Covid stopped it, but I do wonder if it will happen again now.

Eurgh so selfish, it might be legal but CFs.
dottiedodah · 15/09/2021 07:19

We are in a similar position as well. Some people with 3 cars as well! Sadly nothing to be done really. I don't think you should damage it as you could get in trouble, and it still probably won't stop him !

Jangle33 · 15/09/2021 07:23

Don’t school dads do the school run too! we need to stop perpetuating the gender biased default that women will be doing all the childcare.

Isn't that what ASBOs were invented for ?

scarpa · 15/09/2021 13:43
@scarpa how embarrassing for you Hmm people are allowed to be annoyed at things that inconvenience them even if they do accept its legal and allowed
Course they are. Doesn't mean it's reasonable of them though, does it? I just said that they needed to accept they don't have any right to park there more than anyone else, which they don't.

And threatening to key it (someone on page 1) and cover it in birdseed (a ton of other people) to get birds to shit on it and damage the paintwork is deranged nonsense - either these people threaten criminal damage over every small thing that inconveniences them, or they genuinely believe this guy has done something wrong and therefore aren't accepting it.

Which he hasn't.

It doesn't matter if he doesn't move his car once in 6 months - as long as it's taxed, MOTed and insured and not parked in a zone with restrictions, he can leave his car there as LONG as he likes.

Annoyed - fine (if not a bit entitled). #teambirdseed - they are being absolutely unhinged.

Yeah cos it's just that easy 🙄

It might not be illegal but it does make you a CF.
