Does anyone know what I mean? A thread will say something like ‘Dog owners - I need your help’ and someone will post to say ‘well I’ve never owned a dog but I think …’

Or you get something like ‘AIBU to think Friends is really misogynistic’ and someone replies with ‘don’t know - never seen it.’ Or ‘what would you buy an eight year old boy for Christmas.’ ‘Nothing, I only know one boy and he’s two.’ Sometimes they’ll admit ‘so that doesn’t really help.’ So what’s the point? Are people just that desperate for attention?

It’s not to aid sinking threads either, it happens even on busy threads that a lot of people are enjoying.

So - AIBU to ask if you’ve noticed this and AIBU to think it’s really annoying?

Don’t know what you mean Grin

mineofuselessinformation · 12/09/2021 20:36

It's because they can't resist the urge to post to have their say.....

KenAdams · 12/09/2021 20:43

I'm with you it's infuriating. It's usually "I have no idea who she is".

Also "does anyone have a link" for obvious things they could Google or pretend they haven't heard of (like Prince Phillip passing away 3 days after his death).

Nayday · 12/09/2021 20:49

The best/worst are the ones which reply in order to state this isn't a problem for them

OP: My DS can't do basic arithmetic. What can we do?

Reply: DS actually did his Maths degree aged 3 and actually is pretty much a genius at everything, no idea what I'd do in your terrible position!

Returnoftheowl · 12/09/2021 20:54

Haha, I've definitely seem that on The Doghouse board... Someone asks for advice about a certain aspect of the dog, someone else wades in with "I hate dogs, you should get rid of it". What use is that?!
I'm not a fan of horses, so I don't frequent the Tack Room board!

mustlovegin · 12/09/2021 20:56

You sound like the thread police OP

Oh god yes - though often they try and do it in a very slightly more disguised way:

OP: my DS can't do basic arithmetic
Poster: oh you're very lucky really, my DS solved Fermat's Last Theorem when he was 18 months and it really was so annoying constantly having to field all the calls from the Nobel Prize Committee! I'd just enjoy having a dullard if I were you, OP, I wish I did!

RedskyThisNight · 12/09/2021 20:58

My particular gripe is parents of toddlers wading in on teenagers threads.

If a poster says that (e.g.) their teenager refuses to brush their teeth, it's rather missing the point to tell us all that your 4 year old can do this.

Cocolapew · 12/09/2021 20:58

They must be the same people who post reviews on Amazon saying they haven't got the item yet or bought it for a present so can't say if it's good or not Confused.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 12/09/2021 20:58

Sorry. Can't help

SirChenjins · 12/09/2021 20:59

I think they just like the attention and hope people will notice them and their pointless post. Otherwise I have no idea - I have never been able to figure it out. I’m not sure if they’re the most annoying type of poster or if it’s the ones who don’t rtft, join a long thread 20 pages in and give an response that was covered on page 2.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 12/09/2021 20:59

Little aside tho. It's like Amazon q&as😂
"Does this work well with x?"
"Can't say I got it for my neice and I don't know if she used it yet"

thedancingbear · 12/09/2021 20:59

Haven’t got a clue. This is the first time I’ve visited this so called ‘mums net’

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 12/09/2021 21:00

People come onto the style and beauty board all the time to tell us that we should just wear whatever we like and they don’t care what they look like as long as they are comfortable.

To be fair I think there is a genuine confusion for some (rather technically inept/inexperienced) people there because they get an email from Amazon 'asking them' (obviously it's actually just autogenerated) to leave a review or answer a question about the product and they think that it is actually an email specifically to them so they should reply to explain why they can't. Which is actually quite sweet, though I agree it often makes the reviews useless.

I always assumed that Amazon sent an email or something to encourage people to participate - and some people assume it's a question addressed personally to them so feel obliged to answer. They always seem really polite too!

It also annoys me when people give advice based on their own memories of being a child/teenager. People go on massive rants about how amazingly well behaved/polite/grateful they were, how they would have never dreamt of being rude to their mum as a teenager or causing her a moment's trouble as a toddler etc, never pausing to them 'hmm, is there any chance that my recollection here is less than 100% objective and complete?'.
TomorrowSomething · 12/09/2021 21:04

Ah sorry - I pretty much repeated Hardbackwriter there!

SirChenjins · 12/09/2021 21:05

There’s a good one on another thread at the moment where someone is asking if others ever feel they’re being ‘preached’ to by TV programmes, and if they also feel annoyed by it.

One person obviously has nothing to contribute because they’ve said “Get a grip, anything vaguely moral and decent seems to amount to preaching according to people like you”. Literally nothing else. I mean, where do you even go with that? 🤷‍♀️😂

Geamhradh · 12/09/2021 21:05

@BlairWaldorfLovesShopping

And that they only use a scrubbing brush and Vim yet get stopped in the street to be told how youthful they look despite being 106.
Rogue1001 · 12/09/2021 21:06

If it wasn't equally as annoying to have posters who just basically agree with what every previous poster has written, but although they're the first to say it then I'd agree

LemonViolet · 12/09/2021 21:07

I’ve never seen anyone post like that so I can’t say if YABU Grin

I love replies which are completely against the whole point of the thread…. like I recently started a thread about what’s your favourite posh cheese sandwich, and someone replied “none I hate cheese”……like, clearly this isn’t the thread for you!

I saw one on style and beauty where the heading was 'foundation recommendations for over 50's skin'. One of the first replies was 'I don't know. I never wear foundation'??!!!

I couldn't understand why anyone who didn't wear foundation even bother to click on the thread in the first place? I just ended up with the thought they're the sort of person who thinks they're superior to other people because they have more important things to do than think about their appearance. Very odd.
