Been prescribed yesterday by doctor and given yesterday. No dead worms seen but two alive on bum in my DD (2)

An ongoing problem for at least a few weeks complaining of sore bum in night checked over and over again several nights and nothing then a few days ago around 4pm threadworm around anus. I’ve been applying Vaseline cleaned house top to bottom and medicated us all. Washing her hands religiously keeping her in nappies to keep her hands out etc. Washing all towels and sheets and everything recommended.

Should I have seen dead worms by now?
I shouldn’t have read so many stories of ovex resistance etc on all the forums but I don’t want her to suffer anymore. Has anyone any positive stories? Please I’m desperate at this point. I have a 1 year old too and an elder child and no symptoms in anyone apart from toddler.

🤮🤮🤮

In my experience it takes a day or two to start working.

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 21:23

I’m just anxious anyway and super worrying if it doesn’t work but thank you for responding!

Give it time, it will work 😄

Kales29 · 09/09/2021 21:34

It will work. When my dc had them, I didn't really see any dead or alive after treating them but I don't think they had a severe case! It can take a few days to fully work.

It's important to re treat 2 weeks after first dose though.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 09/09/2021 21:38

I've never felt the need to check either of my children's anuses for worms! If they have an incredibly itchy bum/vulva at bedtime they get a dose of ovex. They typically then have one uncomfortable night and we hear no more of it. Wash towels, change sheets and PJs, trim and scrub fingernails. You don't need to see the physical evidence.

SW1amp · 09/09/2021 21:40

We had to treat the house after DS did a poo which was more worms than poo 🤮🤮

But we didn’t see another one again. I was expecting to see days of poos full of dead worms but other than the first one, everything was normal

gamerchick · 09/09/2021 21:43

It takes a few days for them to starve to death.

I don't get it either. My eyes roll out of my head on every worm thread someone suggests getting the torch out and checking.

You don't need a GP either. Just keep the stuff in the cupboard, you can buy it over the counter. I used to worm my kids regularly when they were young.

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 21:44

@SW1amp
She has pooped so I just assumed I’d see at least one.

@SuperCaliFragalistic
Oh lord, I wasn’t checking for worms she has had a sort of fissula for ages from being severely constipated as a baby due to cows milk allergy and it sometimes needs cream so I was just checking for that to apply cream but nope. Worm. Right there. So vile.

@gamerchick torches? What. People do that????

OP posts:
Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 21:48

So it’s pretty good at working then? She’s sick of me cleaning her hands I’m just proper paranoid I’ll miss an egg. Apparently I read they are airborne and so easy to reinfect internet full of people claiming they’ve used ovex for years and are still infected.

OP posts:
CursesAndMagic · 09/09/2021 21:55

Literally itching at the thought.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 09/09/2021 21:57

It's always worked fine for us. Like a PP said I keep a box in the bathroom cabinet and hand it out like sweets at the first sign of the classic bedtime itch.

gamerchick · 09/09/2021 21:59

Left alone they have a life cycle of around 6 weeks and with careful hygiene could let it run its course. You would have to be reinfecting yourself over and over to have them for years. Either something else is up or they don't take any other precautions like keep their fingers out their mouth.

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 22:03

@gamerchick something about inhaling eggs from the air or them being left in places. I’ve stopped potty training because nappy off her hands are constantly there. I’ve done one big house clean after seeing first worm and washed hands all the time. I’m so paranoid about stuff like this. DP just asked me how he is supposed to be equipped to deal with this 😂😂 (me, not the worms).

Northernsoullover · 09/09/2021 22:03

Don't stress too much. I never went OTT with the scrubbing. I just changed the bed linen after treatment. I was the only one to get them in our most recent outbreak. I blame university library keyboards (pre covid).

Northernsoullover · 09/09/2021 22:05

Oh and always make sure you have a box in your medicine cupboard forever more. As they party at night you discover them late at night when everything is shut.

Peanutsandchilli · 09/09/2021 22:10

Ovex works absolutely fine and you won't necessarily see dead ones. My 11 year old has had worms a couple of times and one dose was all that was needed. Didn't treat anyone else or wash bedding either time and nobody else got them.
As for checking, I actually videoed them for her because she wanted to see 😂

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 22:10

@Northernsoullover so she had medicine yesterday about 4pm and last night was her worst yet. Put in bed at 7 started jolting crying screaming saying ‘what’s the matter bum?’ Until 9:30pm then up 12-12:30am same again then slept until 9am thankfully. I’ve just been putting Vaseline on as I read this helps the itch. Lots of people saying symptoms subsided after the treatment and we don’t seem to have that which makes me more stressed it hasn’t worked.

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 22:11

@Peanutsandchilli 😂😂 delightful strange little things kids are!! To be fair I asked if they’d lower the curtain during my c section so I could watch so I see why but I don’t think I’d be able to look at a video of worms on my actual bum hole.

Usually takes a couple of days here for it to properly kick in. There was one instance where I actually rang 111 because my son was screaming and crying in pain, I was convinced it had to be something else. The GP who called me said that the medicine sometimes makes them ‘angry’ before it properly kicks in. 🤷‍♀️

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 22:22

@TuckMyWin my poor baby! They are nasty little shits then worms. I honestly just want to get rid ASAP for her. Honestly last night I thought something else was causing it because she was so unsettled. Tonight went down 7pm and has been fine since. Had one sharp pain it seemed and she said mummy my bum and that was it nothing more. So I don’t know. I just wanted to open her nappy and find a worm graveyard and know it was working but maybe I was wrong 😑

OP posts:
SuperCaliFragalistic · 09/09/2021 22:29

If she went down at 7 and no probs since then she's probably over it. Bath tomorrow morning and change of bedsheets.

Janine5425 · 09/09/2021 22:31

@SuperCaliFragalistic some nights shes fine anyway like no problems so I’m not putting to down to working as such we just sometimes have some nights where she is fine all night. That’s what made me think it was teething or something else but no it’s beautiful worms.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 09/09/2021 22:32

Ovex takes a few days to work as it starves them to death rather than killing them directly

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 09/09/2021 22:33

I've never seen a dead worm, but the Ovex always does the job in a day or so. Wash hands and all the sheets, job done.
