Just that really!

Found money on the street earlier. Not enough to bother the police with but felt odd picking it up and keeping it.

We donated it to a local food bank.

@Flyingsatsuma

If I could identify who had lost it, would return it obviously.

If there was no name or address then I would keep it.

Then feel guilty, and give a bit to charity. Then keep the rest.

I think people are getting confused with finding purses and wallets to finding cash. Obviously I would hand in the former but nobody puts their contact details on a £10 note.
KurtWilde · 09/09/2021 20:02

Keep it. How on earth would you find the owner of a £10 note?!

PumpkinKlNG · 09/09/2021 20:07

I never find money and I walk everywhere and don’t drive 🤷‍♀️ I’m laughing at how many people claim to hand it in as if the person is ever going to get it back, no one is going to call the police to see if a £10 note was handed in!

Off topic but a woman kept posting on our local Facebook page how she lost a tenner on the way to the shop and It was her last bit of money to feed her kids (the usual line) and she would get loads of posters offering the replace the money to the point she would end up with much much more than she “lost” it was only till someone pointed out that she posted the same thing the year before, and the year before that...

Unless it's someone's wallet, or in an envelope or birthday card, or wrapped in a lovingly written note from Grandma saying "Use my last pennies to save yourself from ruin", it's finders keepers for me, I'm afraid.

thetemptationofchocolate · 09/09/2021 20:19

I was at a horse event a few years ago. There was a large marquee with catering and trade stands inside it, and behind it were the toilets. On my way back from the loo I came across a plastic bank bag with a roll of notes stuffed into it. No idea how much was in there but it was packed in to the bag so must have been a fair bit.
I did hand it in, it was probably someone's takings for the day.

I found £60 once, took it to the police, it went inclaimed for 3 months, So they gave it back to me. I used it to pay rent - which I wouldn’t have done with out it.

£10 I wouldn’t bother police with. Might give to charity these days as not so skint anymore.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 09/09/2021 20:24

@Annoyedanddissapointed

Can I just ask what do people think would police do with a random tenner from X street??
Leave it 28 days then give it back to the finder
OldTinHat · 09/09/2021 20:35

I found a 1p coin a few weeks back and I was so happy as it meant we're using coins again! I picked it up except I couldn't do the 'up' part so floundered on the pavement until someone took pity on me and helped me back on my feet! I always collect 'coppers' and pop them in a jar until there's enough to donate to charity. It makes me happy! But not the getting up and down bit!

2old2beamum · 09/09/2021 20:52

Many many years ago heavily pregnant I had a hospital appointment and did not have enough money for the complete bus fare home and had to get off the bus a good mile from home. I waddled along the pavement and saw a 10 shilling note (I did say many years agoGrin) fluttering along the road. I moved at great speed and got it and stuffed it in my pocket caught the next bus and bought steaks for tea. Still feel guiltyBlush. Now donate regularly to the homeless.

Alleycat02 · 09/09/2021 21:09

Not going to lie, I found a £10 note on the floor outside at the zoo once and used it for my family to ride the miniature train 😊 No regrets.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 09/09/2021 21:13

I found £60 and took it to the police. Got it back a month later and sownt it.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 09/09/2021 21:13

Spent

MotherOfCrocodiles · 09/09/2021 21:17

Charity. Want to believe this is what others would do with my money if I dropped it.

I once found a wallet with about £200 when I was a student- I handed it in. I have got my wallet back after loosing it a couple of times at least, but always minus the cash. Still glad to get it back though.

eldorado02 · 09/09/2021 21:22

The day after I was given a counterfeit tenner in a shop (didn’t realise until I tried to spend it in another shop!), I found a tenner on the street. I kept it as I figured it was karma.

Sh05 · 09/09/2021 21:41

I just ignore and walk by.
Islamicly speaking if an item found of whatever value, the person who picks it up must go to great lengths to try and determine and find the owner. There's in depth guidance on how often and how far and wide this effort must be so if I see money or valuables of any kind I leave them axactly where they are and I've taught my children the same.
It's a huge responsibility which I know I'm not able to fulfil.

That’s really interesting! I didn’t know that.

I was always under the impression that cash machines ' swallowed' your cash or card and then notified you? Maybe it waits a few minutes..
My card was swallowed by a petrol cash machine when I walked off without it once and I received it back in the post.

I found £20 in an empty park once and I was over the moon because I was in serious financial dire straits. It was a gift from the universe 😇

What did you do with the counterfeit tenner?
SukonthaM · 09/09/2021 22:03

Where are the people commenting that they’d hand a tenner into a police station? I know my local ones won’t accept any lost property unless it’s extremely high value, an illegal item such as a firearm, or something that’s suspected to be related to a crime

itsnotmeitsu · 09/09/2021 22:04

'Unless it's someone's wallet, or in an envelope or birthday card, or wrapped in a lovingly written note from Grandma saying "Use my last pennies to save yourself from ruin", it's finders keepers for me, I'm afraid.'

This is going back to the 80s, and it was my birthday. I was working full-time but always struggling for cash. I'd got a £10 note in my purse, sent with a birthday card. I was looking forward to being able to buy something with that money. It happened that there was a very strong wind on that day, and I was slight. A gust blew me into a lamppost; I dropped my purse. I retrieved it and saw somebody behind me picking up some money and thought it won't be mine - because of course they'd have said, 'Is this yours?' Turned out that money was mine, and as they were right behind me they must have known I'd lost it. But hey, enjoy my birthday £10 note whilst I'm struggling to pay my bills.

The third type: all other kinds of wealth that are not covered by the first two types, such as money and vessels. All of these must be kept as a trust and announcements should be made in the places where people gather.

It is not permissible for anyone to pick up any kind of lost property unless he can be sure that he will deal with it properly and that he is able to make the necessary announcements, because of the hadeeth of Zayd ibn Khaalid al-Juhani (may Allaah be pleased with him), who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about lost gold and silver. He said, ‘Know the details of the purse and the string, then announce it for a year. If no one claims it, then dispose of it, and it is like a trust in your hands. Then if the owner comes along some day, give it to him.” He was asked about the sheep, and he said, “Take it, because either it is for you, or your brother, or the wolf.” He was asked about lost camels, and he said, “What has it got to do with you? It has its water, it can walk to find water and it can eat trees until its owner finds it.”

(Agreed upon).
The meaning of the phrase “Know the purse and the string” refers to the kind of purse or wallet that money is kept in and the way it is fastened or tied up.

The meaning of the phrase “then announce it for a year” is that it should be mentioned to people in the places where they gather, such as in market places and by the doors of the mosque etc. “A year” means for one full year. In the first week after it is found, it should be announced every day, because it is more likely that the owner will come in that first week. After that it should be announced as often as is customary among the people.

This was the method of announcing lost property in the past. Nowadays people should make lost and found announcements in whatever way is appropriate. What matters is achieving the desired result, so one must do whatever it takes to return property to its rightful owner.

Sh05 · 09/09/2021 22:13

There's lots more about different kinds of things you find but this part is some guidance on money, purses, wallets and so on.

randomunicorn · 09/09/2021 22:14

If I found cash I would keep it.. if I found a purse/wallet full of cash with a way to identify the owner I would return it!

BlotBangRub · 09/09/2021 22:14

Spend it.

ClareBlue · 09/09/2021 22:15

As a student I left the whole of the term grant on the bus after cashing the cheque and it falling out of my back pocket in an envelope. It was handed in and I got it all back.
You can guess what I do whenever I find money even 30 years later.
