Just that really!

Found money on the street earlier. Not enough to bother the police with but felt odd picking it up and keeping it.

We donated it to a local food bank.

I found a tenner in the street, looked around but no one to claim it. I picked it up and felt so suspicious and guilty that I went into the nearest charity shop and put it in their collection tin. I was worried it might have been a test and someone was secretly filming me to see if I did the right thing!

BananaPB · 09/09/2021 18:12

If it's in a business like a shop and a note then hand it to staff. If it's a coin I'd pop it in a charity coin collection tub

If it's a coin in the street, I'd keep it without feeling guilty.

TheRebelle · 09/09/2021 18:20

I once found several hundred pounds in a toilet in a busy bar, I handed it in to the bar staff, they probably kept it.

I’ve occasionally found £5 or £10 in the street, I just pocket it, I’ve probably lost similar amounts out of my pocket so it all evens up eventually.

Noseylittlemoo · 09/09/2021 18:25

If I find a note in the street which has happened to me probably half a dozen times I keep it . If its an anonymous place and I haven't seen anyone drop it the chances of finding the genuine owner is virtually zero.
Regarding handing in to the police , I remember as a child my mum found I think it was a £10 note. She trudged us up to the police station and they were distinctly uninterested . I can't remember if they told her to keep it or if they kept it for a set time and then she got to keep it. She was astounded - £10 went a lot further in the 1980s!!!

BeyondMyWits · 09/09/2021 18:25

When I worked in a shop staff honesty was tested... a fiver would be "dropped" in a quiet corner and you handed it in if you found it or a customer handed it to you. They did not say that they were doing this, but it was bloody obvious... didn't stay there long can't be doing with silly games.

NumberTheory · 09/09/2021 18:26

I don’t think I’ve ever found more than about £20, and even that only a couple of times. As far as I can remember I’ve always dropped it in the next charity tin I see, though I would bet if it happened when I was a teen I would have kept it.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 09/09/2021 18:27

Ds and his mate found 200 quid last year.
They knocked at the nearest door and they looked at their cctv. Was a builder a few doors down. He gave ds and his mate 20 quid each!!

lljkk · 09/09/2021 18:29

Under £30 I imagine I'd keep unless there was an obvious person to ask "Is this yours?". Beyond that escalating with value efforts to find owner.

Banani · 09/09/2021 18:31

If it’s in a shop or restaurant etc I’d hand it in. If in the street and no obvious owner it goes in the next charity box I see. The most I’ve ever found was £20, if much more than that though I’d take to a police station.

Moraxella · 09/09/2021 18:32

Found just under £800, handed it in. Wasn’t collected 🤪

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/09/2021 18:41

I’ve never found any loose money more than a fiver. Goes in the guide dog ‘dog’.

I’ve found purses, wallets, fancy phones, bags etc. I’m regularly out very early for work. There must have been lots of money in then over the years. All handed in.

I’ve been on the bones of my arse and remember, like stompy, that losing a tenner would feel like the end of the world.

SukonthaM · 09/09/2021 18:44

I’d keep it

SpeckledlyHen · 09/09/2021 18:57

I have only found money a few times ranging from a £5 note and a tenner I think. Both times I have donated it to charity. Generally, I think the odd note here or there is likely to have just fallen out of someone's pocket and being that there is no identifier to that note there is no way you are going to ensure the claimant of it is the correct one (unless it is obvious)

feeona123 · 09/09/2021 19:02

I found £20 outside a local shop and handed it in to the shop….they probably kept it.

Hoppinggreen · 09/09/2021 19:13

Yes I would for people questioning my post, I would try and find the owner if it was above £5
I remember my Mum losing some money once on the way home from work when I was 7 or 8 and she was really distressed. It was a bit more than £5, maybe £20 tops but I was quite shocked nobody would hand it in

Notaroadrunner · 09/09/2021 19:18

I found money in a shopping centre, left my number with the information desk but never heard back so I ended up spending it after a few months. Found money outside a supermarket. Handed it in to the owner as I know him. Never thought to ask if it was claimed.

underneaththeash · 09/09/2021 19:23

I found £200 a few months ago and just posted on next door. (didn't say the amount or denomination).

Someone pm'd me to say their son had lost 4 fifties - I've never seen anyone so grateful when he picked it up. His first building job and he was the only person working in their family.

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 09/09/2021 19:23

DH has often found money during his work, £10, £20, £40

The circumstances of which would make it impossible for him to identify the owner so he has kept it.

I have lost cash before and never would I think to contact the police about it. Its just bad luck/good luck in my opinion.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 09/09/2021 19:32

I find money all the time and it would never occur to me to hand it in, like it would never occur to me to go to a police station and ask if someone has handed in my lost £20 🤔.
Police : where did you loose it?
Me : between this place and some other place 10 miles away.
Police : well this £20 was found within that 10 mile radius, so it must be yours 😏.

As if.

GameSetMatch · 09/09/2021 19:37

I found £20 on the promenade once, I put it towards my wedding dress.

Treestalll · 09/09/2021 19:38

I find lots of money on my school run and walk to work
20/10/25/30

Treestalll · 09/09/2021 19:39

I just keep them.

Flyingsatsuma · 09/09/2021 19:41

If I could identify who had lost it, would return it obviously.

If there was no name or address then I would keep it.

Then feel guilty, and give a bit to charity. Then keep the rest.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 09/09/2021 19:45

@Treestalll

I find lots of money on my school run and walk to work 20/10/25/30
Friends who drive are always shocked by how much money I find, but if you cycle or walk a lot (and keep your eyes glued to the pavement Blush), you're going to find money.
hiredandsqueak · 09/09/2021 19:50

Coins I stick in the first charity box I see, notes (found the odd fiver, tenner and once a twenty) I give to the salvation army.
