My baby got a heat rash at nursery

My baby girl is almost 9 months and today was her first full day at nursery after a 2 weeks settling period.

When I went to pick her up she was red in the face, her hair was greasy with the moisturiser I'd ask the nursery staff to apply on her for her eczema, had dirt trapped between her fingers and in the creases of her neck and arms, food on her face and fingers.... but, most shocking of all, a heat rash at the back of her neck!

My husband says I worry too much and that it's normal that babies and kids get messy and it's part of life, I shouldn't make a fuzz about it.

I'm thinking, we are paying the equivalent of our mortgage for a reputable nursery, they should be able to keep my precious little girl clean and comfortable! Am I being unreasonable?

Also, I always make sure she has lots of different clothes in her bag in case it gets hot or cold or it rains... how come she got a heat rash??? Did they not check if she was hot?

My heart is breaking and I don't seem to be able to separate my anxious mummy feelings from my objective thoughts ... what has been your experience with nurseries? Shall I speak to them? Do I speak to the key person looking after my daughter or do I speak to the management team? I don't want to be that mum but I just can't except that this is how it's going to be....

I picked my son up today from nursery, he was also greasy, sandy, had food down him and had dirt EVERYWHERE and was sweaty and red. Good as new after a good scrub in the bath lol, totally normal

HoneyItAlreadyDid · 06/09/2021 22:31

How did your daughter seem? Did they tell you what she did today? What she enjoyed? Ate? Played with?

NiceGerbil · 06/09/2021 22:31

Wiping with baby wipes is best kept to a minimum with eczema.

Lukewarm flannel cream. Tiny bit of soap for eczema skin if needed.

thetesdybears · 06/09/2021 22:33

Mine will change her too if she has drooled too much or got it messy. They do wipe her hands and face. Not her nose though I'll clean it with warm cloth to get the crisp bits off if she has sniffles but they obvs just use a tissue which doesn't clean it properly.

Heat rash there's maybe not so much they can do about that. So long as her temperature is fine then it's ok.

My little one usually coke out with sticky messy hair from getting sun lotion on. I obvs apply it very carefully so it doesn't go in her hair etc but if I had 3 kids to do several times a day I wldnt be so neat lol.

NiceGerbil · 06/09/2021 22:33

What was she wearing OP?

Was she happy?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/09/2021 22:34

My DS always came home a bit grubby, and on a day like today (28°) he would also be red faced and shiny with sun cream.

Given that you are a new client, and they can probably see that you are a bit high strung, I am surprised they didn't clean her up a bit for collection time.

KingdomScrolls · 06/09/2021 22:37

I pick up immediately after dinner time, DS is invariably covered in food, they do get him to wash his hands and give his face a wipe , but he always has that almost institutional school smell, plus food, sweat, bit of grime. He loves it, learns lots, has made friends and this weekend I asked him what he'd like to do and he said go to nursery. He gets straight in the shower when we get home. They do wipe his nose when he has a cold, I think that's a bit grim not to do that.

idontlikealdi · 06/09/2021 22:38

Heat rash happens, one of those things. Was the moisturiser where the heat rash is? Sun cream gives my kids heat rash.

LikeTheOceansWeRise · 06/09/2021 22:39

My 16 month old came home with actual mud on her face today. She'd tried to eat some right as I got there to pick her up.

I went through the same thing OP but it is normal. It's been worse over summer as sun cream makes them all greasy and sticky. It doesn't mean they're not looked after, but if it really bothers you after a few weeks say something to them.

Milkbottlelegs · 06/09/2021 22:41

One of my kids suffers with heat rash in warm weather. I didn’t realise that made me a shit parent.

Cam2020 · 06/09/2021 22:42

my precious little girl

Says it all.

iusedtohavechickens · 06/09/2021 22:44

A child that comes home with dirt under their nails and a bit of a mess has had a good day where they have been allowed to explore. Bath your LO and be thankful that she's had an amazing day!

My LO comes hone from nursery with paint in her hair and in her clothes, some days she has had to change her clothes because she's got muddy or wet while playing, I do t. Are as king as she's coming out with a big smile on her beautiful little face and is happy to go back in next time! Staff have worried about her ruining her nice clothes but I've told them many times that it doesn't bother me if she gets them dirty!

NiceGerbil · 06/09/2021 22:46

Op what was she wearing.

Was she happy?

Timeforachangetoday12 · 06/09/2021 22:51

My daughter suffers awful heat rash nothing I can do, it’s frustrating as it normally kicks of a bad eczema episode. I wouldn’t blame nursery for that side of it.

It was very hot today and a mixture of sticky suncream & eczema cream means that she is likely to extra dirty as everything sticks to that combination.
As others have said was she happy? Maybe mention it to the manager? But it’s a balance with the eczema cream not to keep irritating it with wiping it off etc I know that would have caused issues with my daughter especially on her hands !

Onestep2021 · 06/09/2021 22:55

It’s funny in the UK.
In Spain, the nursery my son attended would half-flannel clean, brush his hair, put on fresh nappy and bit of a baby cologne before they handed him over. He’d be ready to go out if needed.
Nursery in the UK : i take him straight home for shower.
I don’t need baby cologne and love to see paint and mud stains or signs of fun outdoors but I am surprised when they hand him back with food around his mouth or dirty nose. I wouldn’t take him there in that state..

Suspicioussam · 06/09/2021 23:04

I'm sorry but I don't agree with most of these posts. I've only used childminders and my kids always come home clean. They might have stained clothes from spillages or a bit of paint or something, but their hands and faces are clean and they don't come home with heat rash!

NiceGerbil · 06/09/2021 23:15

Baby cologne?!

That made me smile!

In all honesty a lot of this stuff can be terrible for eczema with little ones.

namechangeforthispost123 · 07/09/2021 05:09

Did you collect her earlier than they expected? My nursery would always give a wipe over / change before I collected my dd but she'd often be filthy if I ever turned up early, which I didn't mind because she's happy.

Galou · 07/09/2021 08:11

I'm not sure what this is adding to the discussion. It's not kind to say, especially when I'm looking for reassurance... We could all do with more empathy in our lives ❤️

Heat rash is caused by sweat blocking pores and if your daughter is using sun cream or eczema cream this will have made it worse. All kids get a heat rash honestly.

Was she really truly filthy or just a bit grimy?

Cuddlyrottweiler · 07/09/2021 08:26

Well you'd be appalled with my parenting then as DS regularly has those things.
It's hot, DS had heat rash for ages despite being almost naked with the fans on most of the time last time it was hot. I don't quite understand what the problem is that they put the moisturiser on you asked them to put on though?

Kids get dirty, maybe, as you've said you get anxious, you usually make a big effort to keep her clean and looking nice? But I think just let her play and get dirty and put her in the bath.

WTF475878237NC · 07/09/2021 11:47

Grubby clothes is normal but cleaning a baby's face after a meal is just basic care. I'm with you there OP.

Steelesauce · 07/09/2021 11:55

I love it when mine come out filthy and dishevelled. I know they're going to scoff their tea and fall straight asleep after their bath because they've had a fun, active day!

Horehound · 07/09/2021 11:59

To me this sounds pretty normal. They get mucky at nursery because they are having fun.
The one thing I want to happen more is if they have a snotty nose the staff should wipe it more.
