Scotland to trial 4-day working week

With no consequential pay reduction.

I couldn’t find a thread on this. Apologies if I have missed one.

I’m not sure what to make of this. I already work a four-day week (so that my four year old isn’t in full time nursery) and it’s a nice balance. But sometimes a bit stressful because my workload is heavy so it’s one less day in which to get things done. However, soooo many people are so overworked and stressed and it would be good for mental health etc.

But I’m not entirely clear on how this will work in practice e.g small private businesses. Twitter views are very mixed. How will it benefit retail staff etc, will it only benefit the office workers…

Just wondering what the consensus is.

You’ve embarrassed yourself here. You need to read more.

Pathetic. I read plenty, thanks.

At least provide something to read if you're going to use "read more" as a retort.

I meant you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the Barnett formula.

I can’t provide endless sources for ignorant people on the internet, I’m afraid. You’re going to either 1) continue to embarrass yourself 2) do your own research or 3) lobby for an English independence referendum.

Meant to add, the example of home working will also be true of a four day week for many companies.

I'd imagine part time workers would have their hours pro rata'd to whatever 20% less of their usual is?

Pumperthepumper · 03/09/2021 20:13

@Clocktopus

It won't work for every job or every individual circumstance but it will work for quite a lot of people and they should have the opportunity to do it if their employer can accommodate it.

For many years DH employer maintained that home working was impossible to accommodate in their business model, home working was not viable, home working was simply not an option. They had a forced trial of home working during the covid lockdowns and found that actually it saved them money because they didn't need to run so many office buildings with associated costs. Contracts were swiftly renegotiated and now all staff work a minimum of two days a week from home, staff can apply to do more or less via the flexible working application process - someone on DHs team applied to do all of their shifts in the office, someone else applied to do all five days at home. They now only need half the office space because staff can share workspaces depending on who is in the office and who is at home on any given day. A business model that was considered unviable only two years ago is now their ideal.

Yes, that’s it exactly. Covid has meant a lot of reflections on the learning environment and a trial of a new way of working is a great result.

@Pumperthepumper Why not? They won’t all have the same day off.

Jo is a cleaner. Jo works 7am - 1pm Monday - Friday. Jo gets to work a 4 day week with the same pay and works Monday - Thursday. Who does the cleaning on the Friday?

Alan.

Whycangirlsbesonasty · 03/09/2021 20:17

Where does Alan’s pay come from if Jo has been paid the same as she currently gets?

Karen is a receptionist and works 9am - 1pm Monday to Friday.
Pamela job shares with Karen. Pamela works 1pm - 5pm Monday to Friday.
Karen changes to Monday to Thursday.
Pamela changes to Tuesday to Friday.
Who covers the reception desk on Friday morning?
Who covers the reception desk on a Monday afternoon?

More proof if you ever needed it, that if Scotland was independent, it would be Greece 2.0. Bankrupt. With the end of the global oil economy approaching and a Mickey Mouse government led by the SNP, without the Barnet formula, Scotland would be toast.

Have you moved on from pretending you have any idea about Edinburgh schools?

Which specific environment does Jo work in?

My mum's office has a cleaner who only does four days a week, one day a week it doesn't get cleaned and she just does a bit of a deep clean on a Monday.

Exactly! Some businesses are hanging by a thread and can barely keep their heads above water far less hire another person for one 8 hour shift a day. Who would take a 1 day a week job? Alan's says he's not doing it - he already works a 4 day week and gets paid for this. He wants to know can he work a 3 day week with no pay difference now?
Pumperthepumper · 03/09/2021 20:20

@Mantlemoose I’m not pretending to be an expert here but in this second mythical scenario you’ve posted (with no further acknowledgment of the first), I guess it would be up to the management to coordinate who was off and when.

Oh so basically the service deteriorates to make this nonesense idea work.
HoboSexualOnslow · 03/09/2021 20:20

I'd love it, i can do my job in four days but management don't agree.

Pumperthepumper · 03/09/2021 20:21

No.

Whycangirlsbesonasty · 03/09/2021 20:22

Believe me, I know about Edinburgh schools! This just seems like another ill thought out plan that the SNP / Green alliance want to jump on cause a Scandinavian country tried it and it looks all ‘progressive’. It will prove economically disastrous but they don’t realise that because they don’t understand how economies work. If they did there is no way they’d support independence.

Clocktopus · 03/09/2021 20:22

If its as unworkable as some posters claim then the trial will fail, the idea will be shelved, and nothing more will come of it. What's the big deal? If however its trialed and it works then it will benefit a lot of people and will help make work more accessible for many too.

It really doesn’t seem like you do, you emailed the school to ask if what they were doing was illegal Hmm

OK for the office but not for toilets and kitchens surely?
Mantlemoose · 03/09/2021 20:23

@Pumperthepumper

No.

Why not? Everyone else is working less hours for the same pay?
Clocktopus · 03/09/2021 20:24

No, it doesn't. How dirty do you think an office gets in the space of one day? Everyone who works there is an adult, if there are any spillages or unusual amounts of mess (e.g., a bin gets full) then they're capable of sorting it out for themselves on her day off. You wouldn't be able to tell when visiting which day was her day off and which one wasn't.

Pumperthepumper · 03/09/2021 20:24

Why not? Everyone else is working less hours for the same pay?

Because the trial is a four day week rather than a three day.

SNP and Greens are basically playing government government. The size of the population of the Scotland in relation to the government is like a communist state where they used to create jobs to keep people busy. Because they don’t have any real work, they spend their time coming up with Mickey Mouse schemes.
Pumperthepumper · 03/09/2021 20:26

Sorry @Mantlemoose I missed that in Fake Scenario 3 Alan already works four days. In that case, his hours would be adjusted by 20% and he’d be fucking delighted.

So the team was overstaffed previously?

That shows the 4 day thing is still a red herring.
