Period pants - recommendations and practicalities

redblonde · 03/09/2021 12:04

Hi there, not AIBU but posting for traffic.

I’m looking into period pants for my 15 year old and wondered firstly if anyone has any recommendations (she has a couple of days of pretty heavy flow so I wasn’t sure how effective they would be?) and secondly advice on the practicalities - presumably you wear one pair all day? They are supposed to be rinsed out before washing - do you have a bucket in the bathroom (like nappies!)

Any advice gratefully received- thanks.

I have modibodi and I do like them alot but on my heavy days even their maxi 24 hour ones leak. So I use them with tampons on those days for extra protection. But I find them much more comfortable than knickers and pads and on lighter days I just use the modibodis. Next, I think I'll try a moon cup with the pants and ditch the tampons too. But if you don't have mega periods like me (two kids, copper coil and endometriosis..eek) then I think you could use the knickers on their own.

HitchhikersGuide · 16/09/2021 16:46

DD uses modibodi - the best but the most expensive-, cheeky wipes - ok-, and innersy - only OK on a very very light day.
On heavy days, to avoid having to change, she puts a pad in in the morning. Pad comes out at some point during school day so that there's only half a day in pants alone. Just about works. I think they're great - a lot better than pads. Though I must admit I think her life would be transformed by using tampons!

@DontWantTheRivalry

I have really heavy periods and was considering these but I can’t see how they could cope with my flow?

Also I pass a lot of large clots which I guess these pants aren’t designed to cope with??

Just bumping this message as I would like to know the same.
BettyBooDoinTheDo · 16/09/2021 17:13

horseymum You could try the Modi bodi bikini bottoms. Looks like they have them in the larger teen size. My DD wears them under her normal swimsuit. She swims several times a week and also has the Modi bodi racerback costume. She rates them highly

watingroom2 · 16/09/2021 23:55

I found wuka better than modi body (both hold it all .. but Modi body - are 'like swimsuit' material whereas wucka are like 'pants' )

I want to try primark ones - but have not found any in store.

HoboSexualOnslow · 18/09/2021 09:56

I like Wuka, I found modibodi sizing to be way off. A large is really a small! Might try Cheeky Wipes next.

Whatsitbeen · 18/09/2021 10:02

I have modibodi and wuka, much prefer the wuka ones. Find them more comfortable and prefer the materials. Never had a leak from any of them.

Whatsitbeen · 19/09/2021 07:43

@Bagstolen

DD has Modibodi but I was worried she needs something more breathable as noticed a smell which has disappeared now she’s back on sanitary towels. Are any of these fully breathable to not cause thrush?
I found the Modibodi ones had a funny smell too. Wuka don't have this at all.

I just bought dd a body form one as they were on offer Tesco. I would say she seems moderate heavy (only her second one) and these did her fine for a day at school but were quite bulky.

Also got her some in primark - half price for 3 pairs so I got 2 packs. She is going to use for lighter days but she tried them yesterday and they held up well.

Serenissima21 · 19/09/2021 08:22

All are really well rinsed until clean in the laundry sink then into a cold wash (we always wash with cold water and period pants should be cold wash only) with other clothes in the daily wash.
So you wash everything in a cold wash? Does it get your clothes clean?

I have modibodi and the absorbency is fine but they have developed holes in the fabric. Is anyone in the EU and has ordered modibodi since Brexit? I would like to order some for dd but it's not clear what customs fees there are to pay. Or has anyone ordered from an EU based store?

Cathpot · 19/09/2021 08:29

Bought set of modibod and of Wuka as 2 DDs and wanted to be able to tell the pants apart easily , particularly as their periods seem to coincide. I have a bucket in the bathroom to soak and then rinse and put them in with a wash in the evening. Older DD will also use tampons sometimes with pants as back up, younger DD is having none of it and just wants to stick to pants. Both happy with them . I’ve been using 40 degrees and ok so far. I leave them to air dry which does take 2 days .

tshirtsuntan · 19/09/2021 08:32

Primark hipsters, pack of 3 is £13. You get a pair for heavy flow and 2 for medium. I've found them great, bought some for my 16 yr old niece and she's happy with them too.

MitheringMytryl · 19/09/2021 08:34

Bonds Bloody Comfy Undies.

Not sure if they sell them in the UK, I'm in Aus. They're brilliant.

@Serenissima21 this happened to some of mine & is a known issue with them. Such a shame because I think they are great overall. Have you contacted modibodi about it? They replaced my faulty ones with some of the vegan ones which also work great (& I still use the damaged ones at night time).
Serenissima21 · 19/09/2021 10:09

@profsprout no, I haven't but that's a good idea. Thanks!

VikingNorthUtsire · 19/09/2021 10:18

I've started using reusable pads and so far really impressed - I can actually sleep through on days 1-3 without getting up to change, which I could never do with any other form of sanpro.

Those of you who rinse pads/pants but don't soak them, are you running your washing machine every day?

I usually do a cool, no fabric conditioner wash a couple of times a week for sports kit etc, and that's the perfect setting for the pads once they've been rinsed out. But I don't like the idea of keeping them hanging around for a couple of days waiting for a wash, especially in warm weather Envy - even when they've had a good rinse.

Do I just need to run a few extra washes or is there another way? (Someone mentioned a soak bucket like nappies?)

Serenissima21 · 19/09/2021 11:49

I rinse and put them in the machine but sometimes don't turn it on until the next day when Iadd the clothes. I haven't noticed any smells!

QuickQuestionNotAZombie · 02/08/2022 18:43

Hi all, sorry to comment on an old thread but had a quick question. I bought some modibodi swimwear bottoms a while ago but haven't actually used them yet. I'm due to go on holiday in a couple of days and was really looking forward to using the hot tub but I'm having a PM signs (irregular periods for a while now). I can only use pads and have no experience with the bottoms. Has anyone used them in a hot tub? I'm very anxious about it. Be a shame to miss out! Thank you.

Greenleaf22 · 02/08/2022 18:52

It’s not very clean is it? It’s like rinsing you kickers and putting them back on, rinsing your period pad and putting it back on, It’s not good hygiene at all and the should be going in the wash after every wear.

ForfuckssakeEXHstopbeingatwat · 02/08/2022 19:27

any ideas about where to get the smallest sizes? Just getting prepped for when DD starts and the Primark smallest size was too big.

megletthesecond · 02/08/2022 19:33

green they go in the wash after a rinse. I dry them on the line too. (Admittedly DD has only had one period but I intend to continue this way).

Yerroblemom1923 · 02/08/2022 22:21

@VikingNorthUtsire yes, we soak ours in a bucket with a lid from Mothercare that I used to soak the babies' washable nappies in with napisan. They stay in there for a day or two until I put a wash on. No smells.

Wellie89 · 02/08/2022 22:54

I have several cheeky wipes pairs. But always use a tampon or cup as well. To me they feel quite bulky and damp and heavy when 'wet'. I have very heavy periods and definitely wouldn't trust on their own but great instead of always doubling up with a pad as well. Yes they leak sometimes - especially if wearing something tight.
I change them as soon as they get damp - basically as often as would change a pad, so can still get through a few pairs a day. So not particularly practical if spending a lot of time out the house unless easy to carry a bag of spares and waterproof bag for the soiled ones. At home I rinse then just put in the washing machine without fabric conditioner. They also take ages to dry so another reason for needing quite a few pairs.

But, they're still handy backup with a crazy heavy flow!

Wellie89 · 02/08/2022 23:00

I have modibody bikini bottoms and I don't think would trust in water. I don't see how can be absorbent when wet. I have worn mine swimming but as backup with a tampon as well or just when sunbathing.

WineIsMyMainVice · 02/08/2022 23:07

I have modibody and recently bought primark ones which are equally as good. I put one pair on for the day and change early evening, so about 12 hours.
you’re not meant to use fabric conditioner.
