Period pants - recommendations and practicalities

redblonde · 03/09/2021 12:04

Hi there, not AIBU but posting for traffic.

I’m looking into period pants for my 15 year old and wondered firstly if anyone has any recommendations (she has a couple of days of pretty heavy flow so I wasn’t sure how effective they would be?) and secondly advice on the practicalities - presumably you wear one pair all day? They are supposed to be rinsed out before washing - do you have a bucket in the bathroom (like nappies!)

Any advice gratefully received- thanks.

@phishy so it's okay to rinse blood, gunk, sweat and whatever else and rewear? That's disgusting.

mamaca · 06/09/2021 06:54

I'm considering buying some period pants...just wondering if you get an odour when wearing a single pair for a day? (When I say day, I mean from 8am-6pm for instance, ie the hours I would be at work)

There is no odour, as it has a layer of wicking which draws away the liquid into the layers.

Depending on how heavy your flow is, you may be able to wear them for a full day. Or you can use them with a tampon/cup etc during the heavier days. It is a little bit of trial and error at first.

My dd (19) wears a pair all day. She has a medium flow though.

Wuka was recommended to me on here and I love them

LittleBiscuit09 · 06/09/2021 07:59

I rinse them in the sink before piping them in the washing machine.

I use the primark ones which I love! But I have a weird 3 day period. Two pairs a day works for me, one all day and one in the evening.

purplesequins · 06/09/2021 08:02

another question:
I have heavy flow one day and changing can be a blood bath.
how do period pants fare with blood marks around the groin area?

horseymum · 10/09/2021 09:00

How do people find the swimsuits for teenagers? Looking for solutions for dd.

ThreeLittleDots · 10/09/2021 09:24

My daughter (12) hated everything we've tried so she's now happily on the pill!

Hamsterfan · 10/09/2021 09:34

Another one hopping on for advice hope you don’t mind @redblonde
What about leaks at night do any of the pants have an absorbable bit that goes right up to back waist. That’s where leaks seem to happen here - beyond the back of a pad

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 10/09/2021 09:36

@horseymum - I bought the modibodi Red swimsuit for DD when she started her period unexpectedly 2 days before she was due to go swimming with her friends. I must admit I was pretty nervous - her periods are very heavy, and I actually packed a pair of black swim shorts for her to wear over the top as an extra layer of protection! I was pleasantly surprised when she reported absolutely no leaks at all - they managed to contain everything. I'm still not quite sure how they work, but I did make sure they were snug fitting to minimise the chance of leaks. It's currently half price too!

I love the thinx brand and they have various weights for different flows. The absorbent part does go right up the back for sleeping.

LanieM87 · 10/09/2021 10:00

@Hamsterfan the modi bodi "heavy/overnight go all the way up the back, they are really good for overnight, I sometimes just use them instead of my cup and they don't leak at all.

horseymum · 10/09/2021 10:26

The modi bodi one looks perfect but think it's now discontinued, only small sizes left. It looked a bit sportier than the adults one. I'll keep looking but good to know it works.

theresapossuminthekitchen · 10/09/2021 10:40

Cheeky Wipes ones go all the way up to the back as well.

hedgehogger1 · 10/09/2021 10:43

My daughters got a mixture of modibodi/wuka and cheeky ones. I got a few of each to see which was best. She's had no leaks and can be pretty heavy. I did get her some pads from honouryourflow for night time as I knew they were fab/ I also got a little strucket(?) from cheeky which they go in after they've been rinsed until I wash them

hedgehogger1 · 10/09/2021 10:44

Oh and she's got a modibodi swimming cozzie that works really well

PraiseBee · 10/09/2021 10:53

@WillowySnicket

I'm very heavy and I find I have to change mine at least twice in the day. I have modibodi ones. It's a faff to take them off and fully get dressed again, so I now have reusable maternity pads from cheeky wipes for night times and day 1 and 2. Then switch to pants after that and it is brilliant. I find having 3 pants and 2 pads works fine for my usual cycle. Alternatively, mooncup is unmatched for leakproofness!
Are the poppers on the cheeky wipes reusable pads comfortable?
Yerroblemom1923 · 10/09/2021 11:07

I'd love to know how the swimwear works asmy dd is only 12 and doesn't yet like the idea of tampons/mooncup etc. She likes the period pants but I can't figure out how a swimsuit works with a normal period day eg change of 3 + pads.....

DontWantTheRivalry · 10/09/2021 11:28

I have really heavy periods and was considering these but I can’t see how they could cope with my flow?

Also I pass a lot of large clots which I guess these pants aren’t designed to cope with??

WillowySnicket · 14/09/2021 18:47

@PraiseBee I don't feel the poppers but they do ride up/down if your pants aren't snug!

IDidntFloatUpTheLaganInABubble · 14/09/2021 18:51

DD is 15 and has just used the Primark ones for the first time. She was really happy with them.

She wore them over the weekend at home before leaving the house for the first time. Will definitely buy her some more.

PraiseBee · 14/09/2021 23:10

Thanks for the pro tip. Might give em a try

hedgehogger1 · 16/09/2021 15:05

@PraiseBee if your buying pads by the ones made out of fleecey backing. They move around less. I find the honouryourflow ones best

LouNatics · 16/09/2021 16:34

I use pants and washable pads. If I’m going to need a change halfway through the day, I wear them together then just remove the washable pad so I don’t need to remove trousers etc. But most of the time I just use the pants.

I have three pairs, and six washable pads, does me fine.

Bagstolen · 16/09/2021 16:40

DD has Modibodi but I was worried she needs something more breathable as noticed a smell which has disappeared now she’s back on sanitary towels. Are any of these fully breathable to not cause thrush?
