@Ingloriousbasterd

If I'm not interested I just open the message and don't reply..
Yy to this.

I think the thumb has different connotations depending on context.

Christ on a bike - how on earth have reached a point where a thumbs up can be redefined by context? This is madness.
DynamoKev · 03/09/2021 09:57

@HeronLanyon

Even more embarrassingly I didn’t discover this from some cool teen but from a real housewives episode where the women were shocked at how rude the thumbs upper had been. Not for the first time watching that rubbish I thought ‘what on earth? That can’t be real’.
Oh - now I get it - it's another unwelcome import(ation) of US "culture"
DoubleEx · 03/09/2021 10:01

I’m confused. I just confirmed a meeting time with a colleague and she sent me a thumbs up in reply.

Is she really okay with that time, or is she calling me a cunt?

KarenofSparta · 03/09/2021 10:09

🤣

HeronLanyon · 03/09/2021 10:10

dynamo it could well be. It would have been an episode filmed say late 2019 and all agreed immediately - no argument that it was very rude (and nothing contextual which meant a thumbs up would have been ‘inadequate’ ie it needed longer response etc) . All in 40s/50s.

DarlingFell · 03/09/2021 10:16

@wheretoliveplz

My friend does this sometimes. Sends me pics of his lavish holiday and amazing expensive meals and clothes (knowing I can't afford any of that), sends me pics of himself looking very thin saying he feels fat (knowing I am actually clinically fat and depressed about it), send me pictures of his skin glowing saying he's fed up of his skin (knowing I have bad cystic acne that gets me down). It does upset me sometimes, and yes I'll admit in a jealous sort of way, but that's MY problem not his so I always send a nice message back, even if through gritted teeth because he is my friend and just because things aren't going great for me doesn't mean I wish it upon him.
I don't really think he sounds much of a friend to be frank. Surely being good friend is knowing when to use some sensitivity Confused

All the more reason to actually say what you mean, she isn't a mind reader.

Only if your friend is Russian or Iranian

So perhaps using it is not ideal?

Kithic · 03/09/2021 10:42

@FreeekStarz

Ok, so do you think the thumbs up is going to encourage her? I always think of a thumbs up as a non committal 'great' and a sign of lack of interest really. She will be hoping for a gushing comment about how fantastic she looks...and how I love her outfit because that's what is important to her. Whilst I want to be her friend, I don't want to have to gush on a daily basis! Less watsaap messages would be good!
thumbs up mean ' i like it ' why would you think otherwise?

What is the meaning of 👍?
👍 Thumbs Up emoji

The thumbs-up emoji is used to express assent, approval, or encouragement in digital communications, especially in Western cultures.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 03/09/2021 10:59

OP I have a friend who used to bombard me with messages every day. I started replying to every other message or replying once every 3/4 days. I found that any interaction, even just a cursory thumbs up, gave her the little dopamine rush that she was looking for and she continued to bombard me! Limit your replies.

Yeah, it does. It can either be taken as an acknowledgment, a genuine deal.of approval or it can be taken as a sarcastic 'yeah, great.....' 👍 Depends on the context.
