Every. Single. Morning.

Why can't he cut them horizontally, like a normal person?

Bah.

OP posts:

If you cut a tomato horizontally each slice has a bit of the fibrous 'stalky' bit which holds the seeds in place. Also slices seem to be more consistently round. Sliced vertically the seeds and liquid fall out and slices sometimes tend be more oval

I used to work in a bakery, we HAD to cut them vertically otherwise we weren't allowed to use them...

@LochinverSwimmingPool - I love this thread! I've not voted, should I? Which side is winning on votes?
😆

GinJeanie · 30/08/2021 17:15

Ps I don't even like tomatoes so don't really have a leg to stand on 🍅🍅🍅

MrsFin · 30/08/2021 17:20

@Ekofisk

My DM cuts bread horizontally but that’s a whole different thread.

That's the best way to cut bread to get an even size

AnyOldPrion · 30/08/2021 17:20

I didn’t even know this was an issue til MIL told me. Since she cut hers horizontally, I expect that’s the Hyacinth Bucket approved technique, so not for the likes of me anyway.

But surely her sandwiches must be gigantic - like a foot long ?

She puts the bread on its end then cuts it horizontally.

I have no idea why, it’s stupid but she’s always done it that way. I grew up on wonky sliced bread.

My university housemate always cut his toast vertically, never in triangles or horizontally, who on earth does that? I'd never seen toast like it. OP I wholly disagree with your tomato cutting methods but will have to concede defeat to anyone who not only has a fry up every day, has convinced her DH to do so for her and then also complains about how he cuts the tomatoes, I genuinely applaud you.

CovidCorvid · 30/08/2021 23:15

My mum used to have a boiled egg slicer contraption and I’ve always fancied trying a tomato in one of those…..I think it would probably explode!

I’m allergic to them anyway so don’t cut them.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 30/08/2021 23:30

@70isaLimitNotaTarget

Cut into wedges and take out the seeds and the stalky bit

'tis the only civilised way

You take out the seeds? Why??? There's nothing left but the skin then, surely?

Oh, and BTW OP, I'd never even heard of cutting tomatoes horizontally till this thread. I think you're weird and wrong.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 30/08/2021 23:33

I never have such dilemmas. The only rationales way to deal with tomatoes is...

... to open the tin.

(Not a fan of raw tomatoes 🤢)

lottiegarbanzo · 30/08/2021 23:35

The point is to get the stalky bit out, not leave it in!

BethAfra · 31/08/2021 00:02

Hmm, you are wrong of course. But after I married him I found out DH cuts tomatoes horizontally and throws away the top and bottom Shock
He also peels cucumber, but I suspect that's another thread.
