Every. Single. Morning.

Why can't he cut them horizontally, like a normal person?

Bah.

@PeskyRooks

Yes as IM0GEN says. You are the wrong 'un OP
IMOGEN said she cut them horizontally, though (except for salads) and we do not eat salad for breakfast.

Never do we eat salad for breakfast.

DH grills the tomatoes at breakfast-time. Quite rightly.

Cut into wedges and take out the seeds and the stalky bit

'tis the only civilised way

GinJeanie · 30/08/2021 13:30

YANBU - that's unforgivable! 🍅

Ekofisk · 30/08/2021 13:30

I think a diagram showing the difference between horizontally sliced and vertically sliced tomatoes is required.

Otherwise I’m off to find a parking thread.

holidaynearlyover · 30/08/2021 13:30

@SingleHandSue

My mum always cut them vertically so that’s how I did it, then I got a job preparing salad for a sandwich bar and was taught to cut them horizontally.

They definitely look better cut horizontally and I can’t do it any other way now.

I worked as a waitress and also did kitchen prep. We were told to cut round the equator
saladcreamandegg · 30/08/2021 13:31

"Ekofisk
I see. OP is referring to the tomato stalk position?
Yes.

If one cuts a tomato horizontally, the nasty bit where the stalk was remains in its own half, and I can offload it on to DH's plate, leaving the nice half without the stalk for myself."

I can to say YABU unreasonable until I read this bit of evil genius!! Mwah ha ha forever more i'll have the good bit and DH will be oblivious!!

MinkeDinkie · 30/08/2021 13:31

Horizontally, unless cutting them into wedges.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 30/08/2021 13:32

@NoCureForLove

Err, if you cut your tomato in half vertically you will still have two halves for grilling?!
They wobble more though.

Here's a diagram of how I envisage tomato cutting in OP's house if it helps.

This thread seems to have quite a few people who are thinking of a tomato being held on a chopping board and sliced with the knife on it's side.

It's the actual tomato he's slicing from top to bottom, instead of turning it so the stalk is on the side.

LochinverSwimmingPool · 30/08/2021 13:35

@KingdomScrolls

YABVU Also you have tomatoes for breakfast every day?!
Yes. Doesn't everyone?

Grilled, with bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding and toast.

OP posts:
iklboo · 30/08/2021 13:35

Grilled tomatoes are evil. Grin

Thank you for a voice of sanity in this thread.

Exactly.

TrifleCat · 30/08/2021 13:40

I do envy your breakfast OP!

And I am rather pleased to see a diagram has made its way into the thread.

Now to the matter of the tomato cutting-

It is in half vertically for grilling, it is in quarters for wedges for salads, and it is horizontally for sandwiches.

Judgement called, gavel banged etc etc.

GCAcademic · 30/08/2021 13:40

Horizontally for breakfast, vertically at all other times.

LochinverSwimmingPool · 30/08/2021 13:42

DH is fed up because I have started a thread about the way he cuts tomatoes.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

OP posts:
Nandakanda · 30/08/2021 13:43

LTB!!

LochinverSwimmingPool · 30/08/2021 13:43

BTW - Apologies - I had forgotten that diagrams were generally considered to be essential in threads on MN which concern husbands' behavioural issues.

OP posts:
PinkiOcelot · 30/08/2021 13:43

Does it not depend what you’re using them for on how you cut them?

Oogachuckachopsy · 30/08/2021 13:44

You have all that to eat every single morning? Do you work in the mines?!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/08/2021 13:45

You need to make him cut them in a zig-zag
Sharp knife , cut through like a WWWWW until you meet the first cut and twist apart .
Heinz Salad Cream optional
Bugger to get the seeds out though

OneTC · 30/08/2021 13:45

If I'm slicing then horizontal cos they look nicer. All other scenarios you cut where the stalk is

2bazookas · 30/08/2021 13:45

LTB. You know you have to.

LochinverSwimmingPool · 30/08/2021 13:49

Here's a diagram of how I envisage tomato cutting in OP's house if it helps

Well - you are only partly right.
I also cut tomatoes in this house.
Just not for breakfast.
DH cooks breakfast.

I cook dinner.

@Oogachuckachopsy

You have all that to eat every single morning? Do you work in the mines?!
No, no.

We like to share the household duties equitably in this establishment, so DH cooks breakfast and I cook dinner.

Nobody cooks lunch. We haven't got any room for it.
