Tourists exodus today relieved

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

@FreekStar2

People who live in places with lots of tourists seem to have an over-inflated view of their area and themselves- it's like they believe it must be a superior place because others want to visit, and the tourists all come from uncivilised slums somewhere. in reality, most tourist areas are nice to visit- pretty scenery etc. but most don't want to live there, usually because it's full of snotty locals and the shops and hospitality venues are all a a bit pretentious and fake and overly twee. Everyone's usually happy to return to their own places where life has a real purpose and soul and is not just based on creating a false idyl to impress visitors.
Blimey. So much projection here you should set yourself up as a cinema.

@User56439876

We have to go to Cornwall in October to see DF, can't say I am particularly looking forward to it but needs must
It will be ok then - it's only in the school holidays that it is hideous (October half term is ok).
winnieanddaisy · 30/08/2021 10:46

@hobnobs want their name back . I take it that you come from North Wales around the Gwynedd area? They speak Welsh as their first language but not all of Wales do. If you're in a part of Wales where they don't speak Welsh then it's not fair to complain that they won't converse with you in Welsh .

BackInBlackAgain · 30/08/2021 10:47

When I was in Wales last week I went in several shops and I was the only one wearing a mask, that includes staff and customers.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 30/08/2021 10:47

If you live in a touristy area then the inconvenience of tourists goes with the decision to live there.
However, there is absolutely no excuse for people being rude or aggressive or leaving litter whether on holiday or in their own area.
FWIW I have been horrified by the litter being left in local parks and walking hotspots near us - and that has to be mainly locals as we're not in a touristy area.

Sonarl · 30/08/2021 10:48

Yes I do object to being tarred with the same brush as a minority of badly bought up and badly behaved yobs - the type of people who also cause a lot of problems in the city centre and suburbs of the city where I live, incidentally. But those people are an annoying minority, same as the hostile and unfriendly yobs in pubs in Wales telling people to fuck off because they're English. I've been choosing to visit Pembrokeshire once a year for about 15 years (as well as foreign holidays) because I think it is the most stunning place and the access to nature, for me, is unprecedented. I have never, ever been deliberately rude to anyone and have taught my children to be respectful. I detest people that leave litter anywhere, especially on beaches, but I see this everywhere, not just in Wales and Cornwall/Devon. As much as I adore the Welsh coastline and beaches, these posts have put me off though. I have done nothing to be unwelcome as a tourist, except visit, look, enjoy, spend my money, park carefully and take my rubbish with me. But I'm getting sick of being lumped into an amorphous blob of obnoxious tourists. I've been made more welcome in central London this year so I think I'll do city breaks or holiday abroad next year (which is a shame as I've never been anywher to rival the beaches of Pembrokeshire, including the Indian Ocean, and I love beaches).

Picklypickles · 30/08/2021 10:48

I haven't been on holiday, I live in Devon and can barely leave my house for tourists in Lycra these days! If I was to go on holiday I should think wales would be bottom of the list of options tbf, been once and it was a strong contender for worst holiday ever, it was 35 years ago and I've still not forgotten how shit it was!

Neverrains · 30/08/2021 10:49

Mask compliance was pretty low when we went to Wales a few weeks ago too, even in the Tesco we stopped at in the middle of nowhere on our way down. I was quite surprised by it TBH.

Lessthanaballpark · 30/08/2021 10:49

Who are you talking to OP? Are we them?

mrsevangelina · 30/08/2021 10:51

I don't feel like this is Wales specific. I live in a tourist area and it's been the same here. There are many tourists (though not all, obviously) who leave their manners and politeness behind when they go on holiday and cause lots of upset for the locals. I'm sure it's the same on holiday destinations abroad.

No amount of 'we'll go elsewhere and spend out money next year/be grateful for our money/you would be lost without us/blah blah blah' will make that untrue.

Most tourists are exceedingly polite and respectful, of course. The minority ruin it.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 30/08/2021 10:52

OP I sympathise — I live in a tourist-heavy area too (Edinburgh) and there has definitely been an uptick in entitled and extremely rude tourists here too. As others say, it’s not the majority but it’s a very noisy and noticeable minority. We caught three members of a beered-up hen party squatting down and having a piss behind our car on Friday. Fuckety-bye, etc.

I don’t think anyone who lives in a tourist area is saying don’t come — it’s more like come, but visit mindfully and remember that people live here too. And if you can’t go on holiday with a bit of respect for others, you might want to revisit some of the basic social niceties before you book anything else.

Neverrains · 30/08/2021 10:52

They ruin it for the polite and respectful tourists too.

What a twatty thing to say! :o
thetemptationofchocolate · 30/08/2021 10:52

I too live in an area popular for holidays. I've lived here for 20 years and we are used to having more people around in the summer. But this year there have been SO many more people, I've never known it so busy. It's great for all the farms who have opened up temporary camp sites, and for everyone who makes their living from tourism, but for others it has been a difficult time.
We have also watched Covid rates go up as more people come to the area. This has caused many issues especially to businesses who are trying to feed & entertain the visitors, as they have so many staff off with it. Someone was telling me the other day that the local Hospice had to close for a day as they hadn't got enough healthy staff to keep it open. Now that's bad.
It's no wonder people are stressed by this unusual number of visitors. But as a pp said, it's not the visitors per se, it's rude people who are the problem.

Wobblywibblywoo · 30/08/2021 10:54

@RockingMyFiftiesNot I didn’t decide to live in a tourist area I was born here like the rest of my family, and we normally just put up with the tourists and know the times ect to avoid, however this year the amount of traffic and bullying on our local roads by tourists when us locals are going about out daily lives and work has been awful, not to mention posts upon posts on Facebook of kiosk workers, bar workers and local shops receiving abuse to the point of closing early in the evenings have been really sad for us all, we can’t wait for it to end, there has definitely been a lot of fed up angry locals this year at our situation.

HesterShaw1 · 30/08/2021 10:55

Inflated prices happen where there's the demand - every bloody year the price of holidays shoots up in the school holidays. You can't really expect people to act like saints and say "no, don't give us extra money." That's capitalism for ya.

It's odd - on MN I was told I was stupid for NOT putting up my prices this year, that it proved I had no business sense.

THisbackwithavengeance · 30/08/2021 10:55

Equally, perhaps city dwellers dont want young people/job seekers from outlying/poor parts of the UK to move to their cities nicking all the jobs and accommodation and making the place more crowded?

PersonaNonGarter · 30/08/2021 10:56

Is hospitality for you, OP?

Yes and that's why I didn't go this year. But there must also be an element of you should get what you pay for and if people have paid a premium price and don't get what they feel they've paid for of course they're going to be dissatisfied and grumpy.

So - what? People who were born in the area, have often lived in the area for generations, who have jobs, friends, families, etc around them, should just bog off so that people like you can come on holiday, buy them out of all the affordable housing and gentrify it even further?

Jesus wept

Of course not. But you’d hope that if they’re charging massively inflated prices they can use some of that money to hire properly trained staff on a decent wage, to meet the demand?

AICM · 30/08/2021 10:58

@thatyouleavebehind

God I live in a touristy area and I for one am relieved it's nearly over. Tourists do my nut in
Do you ever go on holiday?
Wobblywibblywoo · 30/08/2021 10:59

@RowenaRavenclawtheSecond exactly this, well said, see my above post.

Yes Grin

MN expects you to be a hard-nosed business woman - but at the same time, you therefore deserve everything you get from visitors because they're paying through the nose for it.

Probably even if you don't put up your prices you deserve everything you get cos you're still getting paid.
