Tourists exodus today relieved

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 09:16

Well it's over today the tsunami of tourists will be gone.

We have never experienced such, rudeness, aggressive behaviour from them as we have this summer. Our businesses have limped along short staffed, been abused, threatened as have locals. The littering has been something else.

I know everyone has had a bad year but so have the Welsh our lockdowns harder and longer than others.

We still wear masks in shops fgs

So hopefully you all had good holidays but glad of a bit of peace now

@HesterShaw1

You spend six grand a year in your local pub? Shock
We have a local who spends that and more a night. He was catered for all summer by the landlord no matter what tourists turned up

Our local farmer put up a tent in a field full of cow shit put in a bed and a portaloo and called it glamping. I blushed for him cheeky sod. The field was tussocky the generator a noisy one he was taking the piss. He's a TV celebs you all know

Oh dear. The 'seaside landlady' lives on, in spirit if not in person. This attitude to tourists is one of the reasons that the lure of abroad, anywhere abroad, is so strong. No wonder the seaside towns of England are so run down. The call of Benidorm is loud. With sunshine too.

Never having met a seaside landlady I demur to your superior knowledge

Trust me. "Abroad" bitches about the tourists too. Just in another language and on their forums
MistySkiesAfterRain · 03/09/2021 16:06

God this is terrible. If we can't go on holiday in our own country and be nice to staff, we are screwed. How did it get like this?

I think you just have to go firm "we do not tolerate abuse to our staff" signs.

I've worked in hospitality so I have a sense of it.

The thing is...its not "happy to take the dollar", its that people get like this once they have already used your services e.g. eaten a meal then complain to try and get it all comped.

I'm not denying some people have tried to make quick money - maybe there needs to be some kind of local quality kite mark for businesses?

3scape · 03/09/2021 16:11

Ah. The warm British welcome and their incessant entitlement to "their" space which of course extends to all public and commercial space.

More people equals less patience and more chance of unpleasant behaviour.

But of COURSE, all of the unpleasantness could never be locals. Like the ones painting anti "tourist" graffiti over the surplus nursing accommodation. Charming country.

You spend £6k a year in a restaurant
Basically only clientele during lockdown
And when asked where you have been for last few weeks you ducked the question Confused

You say he needs to build bridges with locals but how he can he do that if you don’t talk to him?!

Why? He’d have made a killing with minimal outlay. Good on him

GenMatria · 03/09/2021 17:41

There was a naked man jet skiing not far from me recently - the tourists on the whole have been fine. I havent come accross any nastiness - DH had a lovely chat about the local area the other day, pointing out certain tourist/historical locations etc. I even had a chat with a client encouraging them to come back to a certain beach they visited on my island because they hadnt walked far enough to see the best and possibly one of the most famous attractions here.

OP I empathise with you, some tourists can be hellish. but at the same time, some locals can be rude and uninviting.

The last 18 months or so have been difficult for a lot of people. The nicer we are to each other, the better IMO. This goes both ways.

I think us Welsh are just very protective of our language and culture and a percentage of tourists believe that Wales wouldnt surviuve without the 6% GDP that tourism brings in.

Some also question why we speak Welsh, and say its a dying language etc.

There is a lot of negative that outshines the positive tourism unfortunately.

Was that on Air B&B for £1500 a week? If so I saw it when I was looking !

DdraigGoch · 03/09/2021 22:44

I can't believe how many posters on this thread have actually excused the behaviour of people who were verbally, and sometimes physically abusive. "But they've had a bad year". Guess what, so has everyone. I don't go around threatening retail and hospitality staff though, I treat them like human beings.

GinPin2 · 04/09/2021 07:55

Someone with a field has set up a campsite in my daughter's hamlet.
Very difficult pushing the large pram now down the lane.
Most drivers are appreciative when you pull the pram into the hedgerow with you, but a few are so rude that you are in their way.
Because of this my daughter now just continues to walk in the lane until she reaches her cottage and then they screech past.
Last week my grandchildren and I walked to town, for the beach.
We didn't go on it after all. Just had an icecream and walked home.
We went down the next morning at 7.30 !
Both incidents are annoying but hopefully just temporary. Smile

By the way, it is not just Wales where masks are worn in the shops. Most shops in our part of SouthWest England ask for masks to be worn too, and the hand gel etc is still provided for use.

That picture of crowded Uk beach bathed In sun makes me feel happy, which I know is the opposite of how it made you feel.

Most of those won’t live near a beach.
We are needing end of summer
It’s been a pretty poor weather wise summer
Coming out of a 2 year pandemic
And families just making the last of it before return to school / work / winter

I suppose it’s how you view life really

CounsellorTroi · 04/09/2021 08:44

@HesterShaw1

I agree, or maybe you just don’t want to admit it. It’s well known that shops, pubs etc charge a tourist and a local rate.

That most certainly isn't true here.

I can’t work out how this would work in practice. Can shop/pub staff tell just by looking at people who is local and who is a tourist?
jacks11 · 04/09/2021 09:45

I don’t work in the tourist industry. But I too have found the tourists this year particularly difficult. Not all, but a significant minority, have caused havoc in our local area. I don’t know if it is a different demographic than usual or if it is covid/lockdown frustration. Or both.

Last few years have been particularly bad for people acting terribly in terms of wandering where they should not be, with little care about whether they should be there, whether it is safe, acting totally irresponsibly and leaving a mess behind them. Worse than I’ve ever known. To be fair, it’s not just tourists that have been doing this- it is the “semi-locals” too. The tourists have just magnified the numbers. The litter has been terrible, the walking where they should not be (despite signs), leaving gates etc. We have had people parking on our farm road to go for a walk etc- we are a working farm and they are causing obstructions. We’ve had people wandering into the yard, patting the stock and the horses. I’ve said before, we have even had people but their children in with the livestock for “cute pictures”- it is so dangerous, yet when caught and told do, we’re often getting angry responses. The last few years we’ve also had people actually going into the barns and climbing on bales and even machinery! Again, not purely tourists- semi-locals too (travelling in from near-ish town and slightly further away city, for example). But the attitude when asked to stop/leave/get back on the path/take their litter with them (putting non-recyclable litter into our recycling bin is common) has been appalling- you’d think we were advertising ourselves as a tourist attraction or theme park. I have been verbally abused on numerous occasions this summer, more than I can ever remember.

We’ve also had camper vans parking anywhere and everywhere- such as in passing places on rural roads and on private land (then seemingly being mystified when told they should not be there) has been a huge issue. There has been several assaults of locals who have asked people to move on- I’m prepared to believe some locals have been overly confrontational as there is a lot of irritation, but I have witnessed one altercation personally where the driver was furious at being asked to move on “again” and was shouting and swearing and squaring up to my DH who had politely asked them to move on as they had parked in the gateway of the field he was trying to access. He demanded we “go and work on another field, there are lots of them so why can’t you fuck off and leave us alone”. This is not an unusual experience from speaking to others.

My friends husband is the local policeman and he was saying they’ve had more issues than is normal in the last 2 summers with illegal parking, rowdy behaviour, businesses reporting abuse of staff and more altercations/ fights/ assaults/problems in the local pubs and restaurants.

We’ve also have been having issues with the amount of littering. Including dirty nappies and human waste, I assume this is mainly camper and/camping- utterly revolting. But why would you go to a beauty spot and leave it in a mess with your rubbish? It’s sad.

The driving has been…. Interesting… at times completely frightening. I know it’s just because some people aren’t used to our single track roads, but it does get frustrating.

I have been astounded at the number who did not seem to have researched the area they come to. We’ve had people moaning, and quite a few angry, because the small village shop is not open late- the staff are reporting frequently being shouted at regarding this and also the fact that they don’t carry a huge stock. There has been a lot of complaints that they cannot get a takeaway delivered to the village (or even better, their rural cottage which is miles out of the village). We have lots of outdoor activities, beautiful countryside with walks, historic buildings/attractions- all of which is presumably the attraction to visit the area- yet lots of moaning about “nothing to do”- there is, but if what you want is shops/theatre/bars and nightclubs, rural Scotland is probably not the best place to be on holiday, surely? And yet…..

My friend is a Ghillie and has worked the local river for nearly 30 years, so knows it like the back of his hand, and has come across a worrying number of people playing/being on the river in dangerous places/dangerous ways. He says that about 1/3 of the time when he spots them and explains why they should not be doing that, or doing it there, he gets an annoyed/angry response- like he’s trying to spoil their fun at best. He has been quite shaken by some of the verbal abuse, all for having the temerity to try to help keep them safe!

I don’t think tourists, per se, are unwelcome- but we have noticed a change in the behaviour of tourists- it is never normally as awful as it has been this summer and last. I think those people who rely on tourists are happy to have them back. In principle, we don’t have an issue with tourists and welcome them- but the behaviour of a significant minority of them, in our area, have caused issues and behaved unpleasantly. I have noticed that when it gets to a certain level, I start to see the bad more than the good- and I suspect that is true for many people- which is a shame for the lovely, polite tourists! I don’t know what the solution is.

NantesElephant · 04/09/2021 11:17

@jacks11 I could have written your post. I am not a farmer but otherwise the experience has been very similar and sadly it’s the negative behavior that we tend to remember. The people who are disappointed by the lack of 24 hour facilities and entertainment will hopefully not return next year and leave it for the tourists who would ordinarily appreciate the area and aren’t here simply because their usual holiday destination is out of bounds.

Well it was the barman not the owner.

£100 a week does not put me in the top spenders.
It is £6.30 for a pint. Some of our road live there (or did)

Its my local pub. I live on the edge of the centre of a tourist town. Our road is 100% residential (or airbnb) but the businesses start at the end of our road. 15 minutes walk to centre of the town.

GinPin2 · 04/09/2021 12:41

Yes, @Marni83, absolutely.

The beach was a bit of a disappointment for us but we fed ducks and squirrels on the way home and had a 99 ice cream each on the promenade so the children were happy. It was freezing down there the next morning though !!!
( I did not make them walk again- it's 3 miles! )
More annoyingly though, is the attitude of some ( not all) drivers off the pop up campsite. There are only 12 houses in my daughter's hamlet so you can imagine the increase in traffic along the single track lane.

Fair enough some one has made some money, and many people have managed to have a camping holiday, but we just wish that the few who ruin it by racing along and getting annoyed that there is a coachbuilt pram in the way, we just wish that they had more consideration for the locals.
But , as you say, they will all be back at school/work soon Smile

That is a tourist area for you. Taking the piss. Shame your local seems to want to rinse locals alongside tourists
